Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
W. H.IBLAGKMERIAND E. R. CARPENTER, OF'CLERMONT, IOWA. i
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-WHEri-Ls.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,208, dated September 25, 1866.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, W. H. BLAGKMER and E. R. CARPENTER, of Clermont, in the county of VFayette and State of Iowa. have invented a new and Improved Water-Wheel; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilledin the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is avertical rsection of ourA invenf tion, taken in the line a: w, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a
horizontal section of the same, taken in the line y y, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts. f
This invention relates to a newand improved horizontal waterwheel, of that class in which power isobtained by the direct and reacting force of the water, or by percussion and gravity.
A represents a peirstock, in which the wheel is placed and Works.
B is the wheel, placed on avertical shaft, C, the lower end of which works on a point, c, in a bridgetree, D, underneath the pen-stock. (See Fig. l.)
rlhe wheel B is composed of a circular head or block, b, having radial buckets c projecting from its periphery. The upper parts of these buckets have a' vertical position forming planes at right angles with thewa-ter as it comes in contact with them, and the lower parts are inclined and slightly curved, forming an angle.
of about forty five degrees with .the upper parts in a backward direction or at their rear, (See Fig. l.) y
The lower inclined parts ofthe buckets are about equal in height to the upper parts, and the former are encompassed by a band, d. The lower parts of the buckets, with the band d, are tted in a circular opening, e, in the bottom of the pen-stock, the `upper edge of the band d and the upper edges of the lower parts ofthe buckets being flush with the upper surface of (See Fig. 2.) These water-passages are of r equal dimensions and at equal distances apart, and are covered by a top-piece, E.
From the above description it will be seen that the water is let upon the wheel at three different points, and at first by impact upon or against the upper parts of the buckets, and then acts by gravity in passing down over the lower inclined parts of the buckets.
The width of the buckets are equal to the Width of the orices of the passages'D, and the water, being confined to the wheel by the blocks Gf, acts upon or against the upper parts of the buckets with its percussive force, and at the verge of the Wheel, while a free escape is allowed the Waterin passing downand over the lower inclined parts of the buckets, so as to obtain the most favorable ei'ects from the force of powcr'of gravity of the same.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the radial buckets G C, the wheel B, blocks C C G', and water-passage D, all constructed and arranged in theman ner and for the purpose herein specified.
W. H. BLAGKMER. E. R. GARPENTER. W'itnesses:
D. P. CAMPBELL, Mino McGLApHERY.
