Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 28, 1919.
Application filed September 18, 1918. Serial No. #5 1,564.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM DUNNELL, a citizen of the United States, residin at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and tate of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guspidors, of which the following is aspecification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in cuspidors, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character with novel and improved means whereby the same is rendered sanitary.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character with which coacts a lid or cover member which is normally in a closed position, and wherein the bowl of the cuspidor is flushed when the lid or cover member is in open position.
- An additional object of the invention is to provide'a device of this general character including a normally closed lid or cover member together with novel and improved means whereby said lid or cover member may be move into open position with a minimum of physical effort.
the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement 'of the several parts of my improved cuspidor whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter'more fully set 'forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
. In order that my invention may be the I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the-accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l isa fragmentary view partly in side elevation and partly in section illustrating a cuspidor constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, the line of section being taken at one side of the bowl of the cuspidor proper; 1
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in vertical section taken through the cuspidor proper;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view partly in section and partly in elevation, illustrating the connection between the operating rod and the valve interposed in the supply pipe as herein disclosed together with a means for automatically returning the rod to its normal position; and v Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view in top plan illustrating the connection between the flexible member and the lid or cover member as herein embodied.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, F denotes a flooring having produced therethrough an opening 1.
B denotes the bowl of a cuspidor proper and which is herein disclosed in the form 0 an inverted cone, and said bowl is suitably supported by the under face of the flooring F with the upper or larger face of the bowl B surrounding and substantially defining the opening 1.
The upper or larger end portion of the bowl B is provided with an inwardly directed flange or lip 2, and arranged within said bowl B and underlying the flange or lip 2 is a flush pipe 3 adapted to discharge downwardly upon the inner wall of the bowl B to effect a thorough cleansing thereof. The flush pipe 3 is in communication with a pipe 4 leading from a suitable source of water supply, preferably under main pressure, although this is not a particular feature of my invention, as the water supply may be of any character to assure the proper discharge through the flush pipe 3. Interposed in the pipe 4 exteriorly of the bowl B is a valve 5 provided with an operating member 6. which will hereinafter be more particularly referred to. v
The lower or apex portion of the bowl B is provided with a restricted discharge opening 7 in communication with a trap 8, and
which trap 8 is continued by a waste pipe 9.
The trap 8 as particularly illustrated in Fig. 2 is of such a character as to assure a liquid seal for the lower end portion of the bowl B. The purposes and advantages of the liquid seal are believed to be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art to which my present invention appcrtains. Coacting with the opening 1 is a lid or cover member 10 hingedly connected as at 11 with the flooring F. and said lid or cover member 10 is mounted for swinging move mentin a vertical plane. The flooring F to one side of the opening 1 and adjacent the hinged connection'll is provided with an member.
opening. 12 through which is directed a downwardly inclined arm l lsuitably secu'red to a side edge or face of the lid or cover member 10. The arm 14 is offset outwardly of the lid or cover member 10 as is particularly illustrated in Fig. 4.
Suitably afiixed to the lower or free end portion 14 is a chain 15 or other flexible This chain or member 15 is disposed inwardly and downwardly in a direction toward the bowl B and is disposed over a guide pulley i116 suitably mounted upon a support of any convenient character, such as one of the supporting girdles or beams G for the flooring F.
The inner end portion of the chain or flexible member 15 is secured to the upper end portion of the outwardly and downwardly inclined lever or arm 17. The lower 'end portion of this lever or arm 17 is pivotally connected as at 18 to the waste pipe 9 or other suitable support, and is capable of swinging movement in a vertical plane so that upon downward swinging movement of the lever or arm 17 the lid dr cover member 10, through the medium of the chain or other flexible member 15 and the arm 14 will be swung upwardly into an open position.
19 denotes a rod mounted for rectilinear movement in a vertical path and which is pivotally connected, as at 20, to the lever or arm 17 at a point inwardly of but'preferably in close proximity to the pivotal connection 19. The upper or opposite end portion of the rod .19 extends through the flooring F and terminates thereabove, and as described in the present embodiment of my invention the upper end portion of said rod 19 has secured thereto a removable cap or pedal 21.
By, pressin I end of the r0 19 by a foot, it will be obvious that the desired movement may be imparted to the lever or arm 17 to effect the upward swinging movement of the lid or cover mem ber 10.
The lid or cover member 10 is normally maintained closed, and in order to permit the return of the lid or cover member 10 to its normal position, I find it of advantage to employ a coil spring 22 encircling the rod 19 and secured at its lower end to the rod 19 and at its opposite endto the flooring F. The spring 22 as herein disclosed is of a retractile type and possesses suflicient tension toelevate the rod 19 when relieved of pressure so that the lid or cover member 10 will be free to drop by gravity to its closed or normal position.
Extending laterally from the rod 19 is a use into the trap 8 and waste pipe 9 whi downwardly upon, the upper operating member 6 of the valve 5 extends so that when the rod 19 is forced downwardly to raise the lid or cover member 10, the valve 5 will be moved into open position so that the requisite flow may be had throughout the pipe 3 to properly flush the bowl B. When the rod 19 is returned under the influence of the spring 22, it will be self-evident that the valve 5.will be moved into closed position so that flushing of the bowl B will not occur when the lid or cover'member 10 is in its closed or normal position.
I find my improved cuspidor to be of particular advantage in use in connection with persons suffering with tuberculosis or other diseases whereby contagion may be spread through ex'pectoration although it is to be noted that my improved cuspidor entirely eliminates the emanation of the disagreeable sect the lower portion of the bowl B with a I screenin element 24, and which element is herein isclosed as comprising a sheet of reticulated fabric. This element 24: serves to prevent the passage of trash or other rei would otherwise have a tendency to hinder or obstructthe flow therethrough.
By having the cap or pedal 21 removable, an extension may be readily engaged with the upper portion of the rod 18 so that a person in a reclining position, such as a atient occupying a bed may conveniently epress the rod 18 through the medium of such extension when such personor patient desires to expcctbrate within the bowlB;
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a cuspidor constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious thatmy invention issusceptible of some change and modification Without departin from the principles and spirit thereof, an for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in "carrying out my invention in practice except as here-' inafter claimed.
I claim: i l
In combination with a flooring having an opening therethrough, a 'bowl suspended from the flooring and surrounding the ope.n-' ing, said flooring being provided with a second opening. a cover hinged to the fioorin and coacting with the first named opening, an arm secured to the cover and extending through the second named opening in the flooring, a lever supported for rocking move:-
ment below the flooring, a flexible connection between the lever and the arm whereby movement of the lever in one direction moves the cover into open position, an endwise movable member-disposed through the flooring and, engaged withthe lever whereby downward: movelhent of the rod swings the lever in a direction to elevate the cover, said covering moving by ravity into closed position when the rod 1s relieved of pressure.
In testimon whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in t e presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM DUNNELL.
