To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEX G. Brown, a-
subject of the King of'Italy, rcsiding at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new anduseful Improvements in Safety Devices for Mines, of which the following is a specification.
My object-is to make a safety device for mines. and my invention consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
Specifically an object of my invention is to automatically disconnect a cage after it passes the upper landing and avoid the possibility of the cage being carried too high and wrecked by the overhead obstructions.
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing amine shaft extending above the ground and pro vided with a safety device embodying the principles. of my invention, parts being broken away and shown in Section. v

The mine shaft 1 extends downwardly froni the face 2 of the ground 3, and the posts 4, 5, 6 and 7 extend upwardly .from the face 2 of the round, the posts being arranged in the orm of a rectangle in plan, and a guide rail 8 is mounted between the posts 4 and 5, and a similar guide rail 9 1s 'mountedbetween the posts 6 and 7. The upper cage landin 13 is some distance above the ground, and it is desirable that automatic means be provided to revent the cage 10 fronLgoing more thana slight distance above'the landing 13. The guide pulley 14 is mounted upon the posts 5 and 7 above a platform 15, and the cable 16 runs over the pulley 14C and down-- wardly through the platform 15. A clevis 17 is connected to the end of the cable 16 by looping the cable through the clevis and forming the fastening 18. The safety device 19 is connected to the clevis 17 by the'clevis pin 20. the upper ends of the arms 24 and 25 being joined, and the eye 26 extending upwardly from the joined ends of the arms '24 and 25 to tit between the bearings of the clevis 17 and receive the clevis pin 20. A' vertical opening 27 is formed through the base 23 to receive the lifting head 22, and a slot 28 extends from the opening 27 toward the arm 24 to receive the lifting stem 21, there being a flat face 29 around the slot 28 to support the lifting head 22. i
A latch bar 30 is mounted upon the base 23 and slides through an opening 31 in the arm 25, there being roller bearings 32 under the latch bar 30, and the latch bar serves to cover the opening 27 and engage the head 22 to hold the head 22 upon the supporting face 29 when it is desired to lift the cage 10.

A stop 33 is mounted uponthc latch bar'30 i cage i and 6, and a thereby causing in front of the latch lever 35, and a pivot 37 is inserted through the housing plate 36 through the latch lever 35 and tapped into the arm 25, so that the latch lever may swing downwardly in front of the latch bar 30 and may swing laterally out of the way of the latch bar 30. A lug 38 extends forwardly from the upper end of the arm 25 and the housing plate 36 fits against this lug and is secured in place by screws 39. The lower end of the housing plate 36 is bent backwardly to form the attaching plate 40 which extends under the .base 23 and is held in plate by cap screws, thereby forming a chamber 41 in which the latch lever 35 operates freely. An opening 42 is formed through the housing plate 36 for the latch bar 30. A retractile coil spring 43 is connected to the latch lever 35 and to the frame, he tension of the spring being exerted to to hold the latch bar 30 to hold the supporting head 22,,to lift the cage 10. An arm 44 extends upwardly and outwardly from the latch lever 35. A trip base 45 is secured to a cross bar' 46 inserted between the posts 4 trip 48 extends from the trip base 45 to engage the arm 44 as the safety device goes upwardly, and a second trip 47 extends from the base 45 to engage the incline face 49 of the housing plate 36, so that as the safety device goes up carrying the cage 10, the trip 48 will first engage the arm 44 and move the latch lever 35 out of engagement with the latch bar 30 and then continued upward movement will cause the trip 47 to sllde upon the face 49 and deflect the safety device 19 and tilt the base 23, v the lifting head 22 to move iipon the rollers 34 until the head 22,falls through the opening 27, thereby disconnecting the cage 10 from the cable 16.
n this way it is made impossible for the 10-to be moved upwardly against the platform 15 or the other overhead machinery. Heretofore it has sometimes happened that the'cag'e was pulled up through the roof of the landing and wound around the pulley 13 and caused more or less damage and endangered the lives of any one who might be in the cage. By the use of the safety device 19 the. cage will pass upwardly above the landing 13 and will be automatically disconnected to fall back upon the supports 50 and 51. Of course, if the cable 16 is properly operated the cagewill only pass above the supports 50 and 51 and then ackup and rest upon the supports. It is only intended that the safety device will pull the latch lever 35 into normal position operate as a safety device when other safety means fall.
It is obvious that my safety device may be used in mines having inclined or horizontal shaft-s as well as in vertical shafts.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. A safety device comprising the combi nation With' a cage having a supporting stem and a supporting head upon the stem,
. of a base having an opening to receive the head and a slot to receive the stem; a latch bar slidingly mounted upon the base to cover and uncover the opening; an inclined face extending upwardly from the base; means for connecting the base to the elevating cable; latch mechanism for controlling the latch bar; and trips adapted to be-rigidly mounted for operating the latch mechanism and for engaging the inclined face. 2. A safety device comprising the combination with a cage elevated by a cable and having a supporting stem and a supporting head upon the stem, of a base having an opening to receive the head and a slot to receive the stem, a latch bar slidingly mounted upon the base to cover and uncover the open ing, an inclined face extending upwardly from the base, means for connecting the base to the elevating cable, a latch controlling the latch bar, a stationary trip adapted to engage said latch and move the same out of engagement wlth said. latch bar, a spring tending to move'said'latch into a normal latch bar engaging position, a second stationary trip adapted to engage the inclined face after said first named trip has'engaged said latch whereby the latch bar is caused to uncover the opening and the head is caused to pass therethrough.
3. A safety device for a cage elevated by a cable comprising a stem connected to the cage and a supporting head upon the stem, a base having an opening to receive the head and a slot to receive the stem, means for locking the head to the base, means for releasing said locking means, means operating said releasing 'yond the desired point and means operative after said last named means fortilting said base to cause said head to move through said opening by gravity thereby disenga ing the cage from the safety device.
