To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM ZAVITZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Algonac, in the county of Saint Clair and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to bag or sack holders for holding sacks in open position while being filled.

The main object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient device of this character which may be quickly operated to effect the opening or closing thereof and which will be reliably held open until manually released.

Another object is to provide improved means for adjusting the holder vertically for use in connection with sacks of varying lengths.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a bag holder constructed in accordance with this invention shown in closed inoperative position,

In the embodiment illustrated a supporting structure is shown in the form of a standard 1 composed of an iron rod having a base in the form of feet 2, any desired number of which may be employed, and which are here shown radiating from a collar 3.

A sleeve 1 is slidably mounted on the standard 1 and is provided with a set screw 5 for holding it in adjusted position. A plate 6 is carried by the sleeve 1 being mounted on the free end of a laterally extending arm 7. This plate 6 is here shown rectangular in form although obviously it may be of any other desired configuration.

connects these arms, one end thereof being pivoted at 10 to arm 8 while its other end is pivoted at 13 to arm 9 at a point below the pivotal connection of arm 9 with plate 6. The arms 8 and 9 are provided at their free ends with lateral extensions 14 and 15 having bag gripping elements 16 at their terminals.

An expanding element in the form of a bar 17 is pivotally connected at 18 to arm 8 and is slidably engaged at its other end with a ratchet rack 21 carried by arm 9, and here shown arcuate in form, the teeth 22 of which are inclined downwardly. The bar 17 has a handle 19 at its free end with an opening 20 in which the rack 21 is mounted and which provides for the sliding movement of the bar relatively to the rack, the inner wall of the opening 20 being designed to be lockingly engaged with the teeth 22 of the rack to hold said bar in adjusted position as is shown clearly in Fig. 2.

In the use of this bag holder, the parts being in collapsed inoperative position as shown in Fig. 1, a bag, not shown, has the arms 8 and 9 extended into the mouth thereof and then by sliding bar 17 downwardly on rack 21, these arms 8 and 9 are expanded until the elements 16 engage the bag at diametrically opposite points. These elements 16 are preferably made arcuate in form and may be of any suitable or desired length so that when the bag is stretched they will hold it open a distance equal to their length to facilitate the insertion of any material desired to be placed therein.

When the bar 17 is swung downwardly a suflicient distance to bring the elements 16 into engagement with the bag walls and to stretch said walls to the limit of their opening movement, the inner wall of opening 20 will then lockingly engage with one of the ratchet teeth 22 of bar 21 and thus hold the parts in expanded position, a toggle like effect being produced by the connection of the bars 8 and 9 with link 12.

To release the holder, the handle 19 is moved laterally in relation to the holder a sufiicient distance to disengage it from the rack bar 21, and said handle may then be moved upwardly to retract arms 8 and 9 and disconnect the elements 16 from the bag.

To adjust the bag engaging members vertically the set screw 5 is released and the sleeve moved up or down on rod 1 until it is positioned at the desired point when screw 5 is again tightened and the holder-is ready for use. 1

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily ap- T the scope of the claimed invention.

I claim In a bag holder, a support, amember mounted onsaid support, arms pivoted at one end to said member in different vertical planes, a link pivotally connected at one end to one arm and atits other end to the other arm, an arcuate rack bar carried by said last mentioned arm, said arms having lateral extensions at their free ends provided with areuate bag engaging members, and a bar pivoted to one arm and encompassing and having slidable engagement with said arcuate rack and provided with means for engaging the teeth ofsaid rack to lock said arms in adjusted position.
