Description

J. G. VINCENT.
HYDROCARBON MOTOR. APPLICATION FILED OCT- 7. I915- 1,292,1 65. Patented Jan. 21, 1919.
Wzliwess: [I706 272 0 2 1.11 41 M y M UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' JESSE Gr. VINCENT, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO PACKARD MOTOR CAR COMPANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
HYDROCABBON-MOTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnssn G. VINCENT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Detroit, Wayne county, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon-Motors, of which the following .is a specification.
This invention relates to hydrocarbon motors, and particularly motors having cylinder blocks arranged side by side. In the form of the invention chosen for illustrative purposes a V type motor is shown.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a novel and convenient arrangement of the carbureter and intake piping of a V or similar type motor.
The above and other objects of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing which forms a part of this specification, and in which the figureirepresents a vertical transverse section through a motor embodying the invention.
Referring to the drawing, 10. represents the motor base or crank case-having suitable supporting arms 11.- A. crank shaft 12 is mounted in bearings 13 in the crank case, and is arranged to drive (through gearing not shown) a cam shaft 14 which is shown as arranged vertically above the crank shaft.
Formed with or 'mounted side by side upon the crank case 10 are two blocks of cylinders 15, shown as suitably waterjacketed as at 16, and provided with valves 17, valve springs 18, and push rods 19, the latter of which cooperate with the cam shaft 14 in the usual way; Other appurtenances of the motor are the spark plugs 16' and exhaust manifolds 16". i
7 It will he understood that each of the cylinder blocks comprises several cylinders, preferably six, and formed integral therewith or properly secured thereto longitudinally along 1ts inner'eide is an intake mani fold 20. These manifolds '20 'connect, with the intake passages to the combustion hamber in the usual way. For manufac' iring advantages, both cylinder blocks are cast ex-, exactly alike, and as shownteach of them is formed with a cross channel or ssage 21, approximately in tlle,'middle o the block and extending from "one; Side to the other and communicatingpvith the manifold 20. On one side of the motor that is, in one of' the blocks, the passage 2 is closed as by a plug 22 arranged adjacent its inner end, and y.
by a pipe 25. Thus the combustible mixture from the carburetor is led into the cross a channel 21 and into the manifold 20 of the right cylinder block, and said manifold sup plies all of the cylinders of that block.
A connecting pipe 26is arranged between t of the combustible mix ure from the manifold of the right hand ylinder block'to the manifold 20 of the left hand cylinder block. The latter manifold supplies the mixture to all of the cylinders of that block.
This connecting pipe 26 is shown as fitting nicely between pipe extensions 27 on each of the manifolds 20, the adjacent edges of the pipe and pipe extensions being grooved to form seats for rings 28 which are preferably formed of rubber or similar material. These rings 28 not only hold the connecting pipe 26 in position, but also close the joint between said pipe and the pipe extension 27, and permit of ready removal of said the two manifolds 20 a]? thus conveys some form of the invention is illustrated and de scribed herein, other forms may be used and changes may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a V-type hydroof said mani olds and supplying the other manifold through said tube.
3. The combination with a hydrocarbon motor, having cylinder blocks arranged in parallel, each of said blocks having a longitudinal intake manifold and one of said blocks having a cross passage communicating with an intake manifold, and a pipe connecting said manifolds, of a carbureter communicating with said cross passage.
(l. 'The combinationwith a hydrocarbon motor having cylinder blocks-arranged in parallel, each of said blocks having a longitudinal intake manifold along its inner side and oneof said blocks having a cross passage communicating with an intake manifold, and a pipe connecting said manifolds, of a carbureter communicating With said cross passage.
5. The combination with a hydrocarbon motor having cylinder blocks arranged inparallel, each of said blocks having a longitudinal intake manifold and one of said locks having a cross passage'rommunicating with an intake manifold, and a pipe connecting said manifolds, of a carbureter arranged at the outer side of the cylinder block having the cross passage and communicating with said passage. 1
' 6. The combination with a hydrocarbon motor having cylinder blocks arranged in parallel, each of'said blocks having a longitudinal intake manifold and a cross passage communicating therewith, and a pipe connecting said manifolds, of a carbureter arranged at the outer side of one of said blocks and communicating with one of said cross passages, and a plug for the other said cross passage. Q
7. The combination'with a hydrocarbon motor having cylinder blocks arranged in parallel, each of said 'blocks having a longitudinal intake manifold along its inner side and a cross passage communicating therewith, and a pipe connecting said manifolds, of a carbureter arranged at the'outer side of one of said blocks and communicating with one of said cross passages, and a plug for the other said cross passage.
8. The combination with a hydrocarbon motor having cylinder blocks arrangedin parallel, each of said blocks having a longitudinal intake manifold along its inner side and'a centrally arranged cross passage communicating therewith, and a 'pipe con necting said manifolds, of a carbureter ar* ranged at the outer side of one of said blocks and communicating with one of said cross passages, and a plug for the other said cross passage.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
