EDWARD HAMMETT, 0F SHEBOYGAN, WISCONSIN.
BEDSTEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1919.
Application filed September 29, 1917-. Serial No. 194,049.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD I'IAMMETT, citizen of the United States, residing at Sheboygan, in the county of Sheboygan and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bedsteads, couches, benches or similar articles of furniture having removable ends for shipment in lmocked-down form, and more particularly to bedsteads having head and foot boards, the primary object of the invention being to provide a strong, simple and durable device for fastening said parts together in a manner which will eliminate the necessity of using side rails as they are now constructed and furnished by manufacturers of beds.
A further object of the invention is to attach the box mattress or springs of a bed directly to the head and foot boards of the bedstead in such a manner that no other connection between said parts will be required.
With the objects stated in view, the invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that various changes and modifications may be resorted to without departure from the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the claim.
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in said drawing,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the structure;
Fig. 2 is a detail in elevation showing a corner fastening, and
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section thereof.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes the head board, and 6 the foot board of an ordinary bedstead having a bottom in the form of a box mattress or spring 7 As ordinarily constructed, the head and foot boards are connected by side rails, but these have been eliminated in the present structure, the bed bottom 7 being the sole connection between said parts. In order that a strong, simple and durable connection may be had between the head and foot Each pair of hooks 11 is at one edge of I a flat metal plate 12, and at its opposite edge the plate is hinged to an attaching plate 13, the latter being fastened to the side of the bed bottom 7 by suitable fasteners 14. The plate 13 is so positioned on the bed bottom, that the hooks 11 project a sufiicient distance from the end thereof to enter the recess 9 and engage the pins 10. The bed bottom 7 is fastened in this manner to the four corner posts, and no other connections between the head and foot boards will be required, the use of side rails being dispensed with.
The hinge connection between the plates 12 and 13 is produced by forming the same with matching hinge knuckles 15 through which a pivot pin 16 is passed. Referring to Fig. 3 of the drawing, it will be seen that the plate 12 is offset laterally from the plate 13, and said plates are parallel, with the hinge knuckles 15 standing out from the face of the plate 12, thus forming a shoulder to bear against the corner'posts 8, which gives greater rigidity to the bed. The hinge also permits the hooks to be moved in either direction to accommodate themselves to any slight variation in the width of the recesses 9 without disturbing the connection.
The invention is shown in connection with a box spring, but it can also be applied to other springs and bed bottoms. The invention is also not limited to bedsteads but it may, with equal facility, be applied tocouches, day-beds, davenports. etc.
I claim The combination with the corner posts of a bedstead and a bed bottom; of a fastening therebetween, said fastening comprising hooks carried by the bed bottom and projecting lengthwise therefrom at the ends thereof, said hooks being at one edge of a plate having vertical hinge knuckles at its opposite edge ofiset from one side of the plate, plates fastened to thebecl bottom and having vertical hinge knuckles offset from one side thereof and matching the firstmentioned hinge knuckles, said plate being oflfset laterally from the first-mentioned plate, and the hinge knuckles standing out from the inner face of the latter to form a shoulder which bears against the corner posts, pivot pins passing through the hinge 10 knuckles, and keepers on the corner posts for the hooks.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
EDWARD HAMMETT.
