IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-ESCAPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,179, dated Julylfi, 1872.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that we, HIRAM T. SEELEY and WM. M. HARRISON, of Kenosha, in the county of Kenosha and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Escapes and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a fire-escape, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents our fire-escape attached to a window, and Figs. 2 and 3 are enlarged perspective views of the metallic portions of the same. I
A represents a curved metallic frame provided in the center with a cylinder, B, and on each side of the same, toward the ends 'of the frame, is a cross-bar, G, with a hole through it, forming a guide for the rope. The ends of the curved frame A are closed, with a round hole through the same, forming a collar, D, for the passage of the rope. The rope E passes through the collar D and guide 0 at one end of the frame, then around the cylinder 13 as many times as there may be room, and then through the guide and collar at the other end of the frame. The upper end of the rope is attached to a metallic hook, G, constructed as shown in Fig. 3, so that it may be hooked on to a window-sill or other convenient place. Through the cylinder B passes a band, H, made of webbing or other suitable material, capable of supporting the required weight. After fastening the hook G in the desired place, the person is seated in the band H and slides down the rope .E. The motion is regulated by a slight tension of the rope below the metallic frame A, thereby producing friction on the cylinder B and a double brake or leverage at the ends D D.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the curved metallic frame A with its cylinder B, guides O O, and collars D D, and the rope E, and band H,.all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 27th day of July, 1871.

MARK DREssER, NORA SEELEY.
