Description
W. A. KENYON, In
Slate.
' Patented my 16, 1872, No. 129,142` yl vTo all whom t may concern:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. KENYON, JR., OF LANCASTER, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLATES..
Specification forming part of Lettere Patent No. 129,142, dated July 16, 187%.
Be it known that I, WM. A. KENYON, J r., of Lancaster, in the oounty of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slate-Rulers 3 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which forms a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in providingV a slate with a movable or adjustable sliding ruler, which ruler may have a peucil-holder at one end.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing,l in which- Figure 1 is a side view and Fig. 2 an end view of the slate and ruler.
A represents the frame and B the plate of an ordinary slate. On the sides of the frame A are cut or otherwise permanently axed cross-lines a a, at suitable intervals, which are intended to set the ruler C by. This` ruler may be made of sheet metal or other suitable material, of any desired width, and so as to surround the slate. It is slipped over the slate, and then pressed inward at the inner edge of the frame, so as to be close to the plate B, and still be readily moved up and down on the slate. I
When it is desired to make lines very close together, the ruler O may be made comparatively wide and have a longitudinal slot,
b, of the desired width. At one end of the4 ruler O may be formed a tube 0r socket, D, while at the other is a ring, d, for attaching the cord tied to the pencil, for hanging up the slate, or for any purposel desired. A
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The rulers O G, constructed to surround y the slate and frame, and slide thereon, thus allowing the slate to be ruled equally upon both sides.
2. The rulers O C, provided with sockets D D and rings del, arranged, in connection with a slate having its frame ruled or notched, as shown and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM A. KENYON, JR.
