Be it known that I, JOHN Bennrrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aldem in the county of Hardin and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Hog-Oilers, of which the following is a specification.
his invention has relation to hog oilers, and the nature and objects thereof will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains in the light of the following explanation of the accompanying drawings, illustrating what l now believe to be the preferred embodiment, or mechanical expression of my invention, from among other forms and arrangements within the spirit of the invention, or the scope `of the appended claims.
ll-llowever, an object of the invention is to provide, improvements in hog Oilers of the type embodying a rotatable member against which the animal rubs itself, my improvep ment comprising means of a novel character for supplyin z oil or other fluid to the roller.
Another o ject of the invention is to provide a hog oiler of the character above set forth embodying an oil reservoir, a conduit extending from said reservoir to the roller, and means operable during rotation of the roller to deliver a predetermined quantity of oil to the conduit.
Astill further object of the invention :is to provide a hog oilerof the character above set forth embodying a reservoir of the vacuum feed type for the purpose 0f maintaining a constant level in a well, and means for periodically removing predetermined quantities of oil from the well for supplying the same to the roller during rotation thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a hog oiling apparatus, having the characteristics above set forth, means whereby the predetermined quantities of oil supplied to the roller may be varied at will.

Suitable means is provided for anchoring the rod uin place. Owing to the direc` l i non of the inclination of the socket it will be noted thatthe rod 14 is disposed at an angle.Y Mounted 'upon the upper end of the rod 1li` is a circular can 15 bottom portion with semi-circular well lb having a downwardly extending enlargement 17 formed exteriorly thereof and provided with a socket to receive the upper end of a rod 14. A set screw 18 enters the enlargement to engage the rod to secure the can. Surrounding the rod 14 is a sleeve 19 adapted to rotate and encircling the sleeve is a coveringl 2O of fabric secured in place by means of a strand of wire 21 wound spirally thereabout. Secured to the upper end of the sleeve 19 is a funnel-shaped member 22 designed to serve conjunctively as a funnel and an actuating means for the oil distributor in a manner to be presentlv noted. The surface ofthe sleeve 19 is formed y with a plurality` of longitudinally extending grooves 23 of varying lengths all loegrinningat the upper end of the sleeve wher by theoil, when fed into the hopper 22 may enter the groove and thence flow down the sleeve supplying oil to the fabric covering the sleeve. It will be noted that the outer rim of the hopper member 22 is serrated as at 24. Located` within the whll 16 isdanuoil formed at its y distributing wheel 25, the same being mountand mounted in bearings 27 secured to the bottom of the can said shaft extending` through an opening in the side-wall ofthe can to project eXteriorly thereof as shown in Fig. 3. i erally as, at 28, and the bottom of the groove is deepened bythe provision of a plurality of circumferentially spaced recesses 29, Each recess is internally threaded to receive a plug 30 having` a kerf in its outer end whereby an instrument may be inserted in Jthe recess to engage in the lrerf and to rotate the plug tothereby vary, the depth and capacity of the pocket at will. Thefother end of the tube depends intoy the hopper member 22 as shown in Fig. 1. Mounted upon the outer end of the shaft 26 isa ratchet wheel 32 which is'engaged by a rotationfthereof. thereby causing the pawl 35 to rotate the ratchet wheel in a series of steps, rearward rotation being prevented by means of a pawl 33. Rotation of the ratchet wheel 32 is transmitted.through the shaft 26 to the groove wheel 25, and each pocket in said wheel receives a supply of oil when reaching a lowermost posit-ion so as to carry the 'oil over the top of the wheel andsubsequently deliver the oil when the pockets are inverted into the conduit 31, the same conveying the oil to the funnel 22 which causes the oil to enter the groove 23 of the sleeve 19 for distribution to all :parts of lthe fabric covering the same. It will be noted that the oil within the reservoir 39 may iow by gravity through the tubular member 40 and fill the well 16 until the level of `the oil rises above the lower end of the tubular member l0 whereupon the further supply of material from the reservoir will cease until the level again falls due to constant abstraction of the oil by means of distributing wheels. It will be noted that by adjusting the threaded plugs 30, the capacity or depth of the pockets or recesses in the distributing wheel may be varied to deliver dii'erent determined quantities of oil to the cloth covered sleeve.

It is to bey understood that I may make such changes in the construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, etc., as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a hog oiler, a rotatable member for contact with the animal, a reservoir, a rotatable dipping means in said reservoir, a shaft upon which said dipping means is mounted, a ratchet wheel mounted on said shaft, a pawl engaging the ratchet wheel, and means mounted on the rotatable member to engage Jdie pawl to oscillate the same whereby to successively rotate the dipping means.
21. In a hog oiler, a rotatable member, a reservoir, a rotatable dipping means within the reservoir. a ratchet wheel rotatable with said dipping means, a conduit for convey ing material from the dipping means to the rotatable member, a pawl engaging the ratchet, and a circular serrated member rotatable with said rotatable member to engage the pawl to rotate the dipping means step by step.
3. In a hog oiler, a rotatable cloth covered sleeve, a funnel mounted at the upper end of the sleeve having its rim serrated, a reservoir, a dipping means mounted in the reserl a socket therein,
:naenaev voir, a conduit for conveying material from the dipping means to the funnel, a ratchet Wheel for rotating the dipping means, and a pawl engaged in the ratchet Wheel and the serratons of the funnel whereby to suoeessively rotate the dipping means during rotation of the sleeve.

A hog oiler comprising a base having a rod having one end mounted in the socket, a sleeve rotatably Copies of this patent may 'be obtained tor five cents each, by addressing the mounted on the rod and provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending grooves, a cloth covering secured to the sleeve over the grooves, a funnel having a serrated upper edge, secured on the top of the sleeve and communicating with the grooves in the sleeve, a reservoir secured on the upper end of the rod, a dipping Wheel rotatably mounted .in the reservoir, means for supplying liquid from the dipping Wheel to the funnel, and means engaging the serrated edge of the funnel for rotating the dipping Wheel when the Wheel is rotated.
