To all whom it my concern:
Be it known that I, ILLIAML. WI-urn,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in. the county of Jefferson-and State. of Alabama, have invented certain useful Improvements in,Type-Write'r Attachments, of which the following is a spec1- fication, reference being had therein'to the accompanying drawing. M
underlining dash, so that it is not ne essary to manipulate the same for underlie. a great number of times as is now requires...
y In the accomp anylng drawings .Figure l is .a topplan View of the key board of a typewriter, showing the present.
invention applied thereto, the type basket being removed and only the dash carrying key lever and its connections being shown,
the escapement shitting member being shown in top. plan.
Fig. 2 is a rear-elevation of the portion of the typewriter adjacent-the esca'pementwheels showing both wheels in position.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof showing the present escapement wheel inoperable relation.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral I designates a key which is voperably connected through the rod 11 to theslidable shaft 12 which carries the two double escapement wheels 13 and 14, the wheel 13 being the regular escapement wheel, while the wheel 14 isv providedwith halt the number of teeth and permits the movement of the carriage two instead'of one space every depression of a'type key.
The spring 15 is so connected as to return the shaft so that the regular escapement wheelie in aiinement with the pawl 16 so that the carriage is permitted movement one type distance, fitSilS usual.
Thetype key 17 is provided with the dash indication 18, while the type- 19 controlled thereby is provided Willi-5t n'g dash E20 Specification of Letters Patent. Patented dB lldr, ll ilflg which approximately the" length of two of the ordinary type.
Thus, when it is desired to operate the dash, the key 10'is depressed and shifts the escapement wheel so that the wheel 1t is thrown into cooperation with the pawl, and
each depression of the type key will cause the movement of the carriage two instead of one space. f
With this attach ment, -when underlining, only half the number of movements are required to cause the underlining member to performthe desired'work.
lVhat I claim as new is 1. In a typewriting machine, the COIHiIuDiltion' with a typewriter carriage, alphabet keys and single-space letter-feeding means for sa d carriage under the control of saidfkeys, of rapid underscoring mechanism n cluding an underscore type of multiple to underscore at each impression a group of width as compared with any alphabet type,
adjoining impressions made by successive' operations of any alphabet types, on said underscoring mechanism also including group-spacing, means and also including.
means to enable the carriage to be taken out of control of said single-space lettenteedmg' means and to be placed under the control of the groupenacmg means, to enable the underscoring at each underscore type-stroke of a group of type impressions made by suc cessively operated alpl'iabet keys. I
2. In a typewriting machine, the combina-' tion with alphabet type keysand 'uniformlyoperating carriage-feeding means under the control thereof, o't rapid underscoring mechanism including an underscore lacy; and
means to cooperate with said m'ulerscorc key, to enable successive operations thereof to underscore succcssiwa groups of alphabettype-improssions, said cooperating means including an underscore type of multiple width as COIHIMU'Ml with an alphabet type. to underscore a; each impression a group of adjoining impressions made by successive operations of any alphabet types, and also including means shiftable to increase the carriage-feeding movement to' an extent to correspond with the extent of'thegroup of alphabet type'impressions underscored at each stroke of the underscoring key.
2 3. In a typewriting machine, the combination with alphabet type keys, a carriage and 1 letter-spacing mechanism therefor, 01. an un-
