Description

KARL HAGEN, OF CHRISTIANIA, NORWAY.
.APPARATUS FOR SHOOTIN G HAND-GRENAIDES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14, 1919.
Application filed May 26, 1917. Serial No. 171,:214.
To all w/wm it may concem:
Be it known that I, KARL HAGEN, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at Christiania, in the Kingdom of Norway, have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Apparatus for Shooting Hand-Grenades; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others .skilled in the art to [which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to an apparatus for Shooting grenades by means of an ordinary rifie. In accordance with the invention the apparatus consists of a tube which is fastened on the gun-pipe and forms an extension of the same, said tube being provided with a side-opening by means of which it communicates with a cylinder, containing the grenade, so that the gases as soon as the bullet has left the pipe and entered the extension tube are let out through the side opening into the grenade cylinder, expelling the grenade from the same.
Part of the powder gases will be let out by the extension tube after the bullet has left the same, and the ratio of the amounts of gas passing out through the tube and into the grenade cylinder may be varied by varying the size of the side opening, whereby the length of the shot as Well as the strength of the recoil may be regulated.
The apparatus may also be used with blank cartridges.
On the drawing is shown a longitudinal section through a form of the invention.
1 is the front end of the gun-pipe and 2 is the extension tube, the diameter of which is conveniently made somewhat larger than the bore of the pipe, and which is fastened to the latter by meansof the bayonet fixture.
Copes of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the In this way it will be understood that the mountng and dismounting of the grenade thrower may take place in a moment. The extension tube 2 carries the cylinder 3, containing the grenade 4 and communicating with the tube by means of the side opening 5 immediately in front of the gun-pipo.
When the bullet 6 has reached the position indicated on the drawing, the opening 5 is completely free so that the powder gases enter the cylinder 3 as indicated by the arrow expelling thegrenade 4 from the said cylinder with great Velocity. After the bullet 6 has left tube 2, part of the gases are let out this way, thus providing security against bursting in case the grenade should accidentally be blocked in cylinder 8. As above mentioned the recoil as well as the length of the shot may be Varied by using openings 5 of difi'erent size.
It Will be obvious that the use of the gun in the ordinary manner is in no way affected by the grenade throwing apparatus, nor is the bullet in touch with the grenade or the ,grenade throwing cylinder.
I claim:
An apparatus for Shootinggrenades by means of ordinary guns or rifles, comprising 111 combination a tube fastened to the front end of the gun-pipe and forming an extension of the same and a cylinder for taking up the grenade said cylinder communieating with said tube by means of a side opening in the same, through which the powder gases enter the grenade cylinder behind the grenade and expel the same.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
KARL HAGEN.
