. may also be readily removed and applied to the talking machine or phonograph; and to provide such other advantages and improvements as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings illustrat ing this invention:
Figure 1 is a front View;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view;
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4-4: of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail showing the construction of the record files or compartments.
My improved phonograph or talking machine cabinet 6, as shown in these drawings,
- is preferably made of triangular form. This "having but three legs,
permits the cabinet to be readily placed in a corner of a room or in other angular places where a square or rectangular cabinet could not be conveniently placed. On account of it also insures the cabinet standing firmly, even if the floor is uneven. On account of the peculiar construction and arrangement of my improved instrument, the top 7 does not need to open, and is therefore rigidly fixed, and serves as a support for anything which may be desired to be placed on the cabinet. 'The upper portion of the front of the cabinet is provided with a panel or frame 8, which is preferably partially closed by a screen or grill 9. The horn 10 is secured at its outer or enlarged end to the panel 8 or front of the instrument, and is entirely supported in this manner. This horn is made in two parts, the lower part 11 being attached to the upper part by a universal joint 12. and
' carrying the reproducer 13 at its free end.
The motor and record actuating mechanism 14: is supported by a horizontal partition 15,
and is located at a. convenient height, so-
that it maybe readily reached by a person sitting in front of the machine. The crank 16 is located within the cabinet, so that there are no parts projecting from the cabinet, and the motor may be wound by a person sitting in front of the machine.
The record compartment or file 17 is located in the bottom of the cabinet, between a partition 18 and the bottom 19, and is of peculiarly novel form of construction. The lower front part of the cabinet, through which access is had to the motor and record compartment, is closed by means of doors 20 and 21. The record file proper-is preferably covered on the bottom with felt or other suitable material 22, and has a series of posts or rods 23 which are spaced apart across the front of the cabinet, as shown in Fig. 2. The several pockets or compartments are preferably made of cloth and supported or carried by these rods. In my improved form of construction, one end of a strip of cloth 24: is secured at 25"tothe side of the cabinet, and is then carried back and forms the first loop orpocket, and then brought forward and around the first. rod 23, and secured to said rod, and then carried back to form the next pocket, and then forward around the next rod, and so on, and its other end finally secured at 26'to the opposite side of the cabinet. Obviously a plurality of pieces of cloth may be used in the place of one continuous strip, if desired. In order to stiffen the cloth between the pockets, and to hold it in vertical position, I provide stiffening plates 27, which are readily made.
-.from sheets of cardboard, and which are cemented or otherwise secured to the cloth atthe sides of the pockets. It is apparentthat this improved record file may be used with different forms of cabinets, but with my improved triangular form, I prefer to make the alternate pockets of different lengths, so that there will be a series of relatively long pockets for large records, with intermediate short pockets for smaller records. In this way practically all of the space is utilized, and approximately as many records may be inserted as though the cabinet were of rectangular form. It will be particularly noted that the rear portions of the pockets are flexible and are not fixed in position, so that they will readily yield and accommodate themselves to the records inserted therein. a
' It Will be observed, however, that various ing machine cabinet having doors in one side changes may be made in the details of conthereof, of a plurality of Vertically arranged in V struction without departingfrom the spirit rods adjacent to the frontandspaced apart, I of the invention, and therefore I do not Wish vertically arranged pockets formed of flexi V 5 to limit myself to the exact construction ble material and extending backwardly from herein shown and described, except as specisaid rods, and stiffening plates secured to fied in the following claim, in which I claim side Walls of said pockets. r The combination With a triangular talk-. 7 MEYER DAVIS Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
