nnvnn'rrsme DEVICE.
Specification of Iletters Patent.
Application filed ianuary 31, 1918. Serial No. 214,719.
To all whom it may concern Be. it known that. I, ALBERT .F. WARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of
,picture, one of said plates having eyes formed thereon in register with the eye openings in the picture and the other plate having a lower lip positioned in register with the mouth opening in the picture. Another Y object of the invention is to provide means for imparting movement to each plate, as will hereinafter be described, to give the pictu'i'e a life-like appearance and action. Further objects will hereinafter appear. The invention consists of-the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to-the accompanyin%drawings, in whichi e 1 is a front view of the picture, showing the application of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the central plate which carries the operating mechanism. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Y 7
Referring to the drawings in detail, A indicates a late constructed oftin, or any other suita 1e material, on which is painted,
or otherwise formed, a picture, such as shown at 2. The plate is cut out to conform to the outline of the picture, and the edge thus formed is preferably inturned, as shown at 3, to permit it to be attached to a rear plate 2, upon which is painted another picture or p a picture similar to the one shown .on thefront plate 2. 5o"
Formed in each of the plates 2 and 2 is a pair ofopenings 4 for the eyes and an opening 5 for the mouth. Interpos'ed between the plates 2 and 2, which are maintained in spaced relation to each other as shown in F 1g. 3, is a frame plate 6. This plate is Patented Jan. '1, 1919.
suitably secured between the picture plates and is provided for the purpose of support ing an operating mechanism, hereinafter to be described. The frame plate may be rectangular in shape, or may conform to the outline of the picture plates, as shown in Flg. 2. The upper portion is cut out, as
shown at 7 to receive a U-shaped sliding frame 8 consisting of a 'bent section of wire.
One leg of the wire 9 is carried in a vertical bearing 10 and its upper endis hook-shaped, as at 11, to project through the forked end 12 of .a bell-crank 13 which is pivotally secured to the frame plate, as at 14. The
- lower end of the bell-crank is provided with a weight 15-and hassuch functionsas a pendulum.
Straddling the wire frame 8 is a plate 16 Y which is U-shaped in cross section. This plate is slidably mounted on the wire frame 8 and it has painted on each side eyes 17 which register with the eye openings in the picture plates. Movement'of the pendulum 15 about its pivot 14 is transmitted through the fork-shaped end of the bell-crank to raise and lower the wire frame and the plate 16 carried thereby The eyes painted on the plate will, therefore, Inoye up and down with relation to the eye openings 4: in the pictures and will give a life-like impression. The plate also has a tendency to'slide horizontally on the wire frame 8 from the full line position. shown .in Fig. 2 to the dotted line position shown at 16, thus permitting the eyes tomove sidewise and further accentuate a life-like action. I
The frame plate is also cut out near the lower end, as shown at 18, to receivea plate 19 which is also U-shaped in cross section to straddle a, wire frame 20.' This frame is also carried in a vertical bearing member 21 and is also actuated by a pendulum 22similar to'the one prevlously described. The
plate 19 is cut out, as shown at 23, to expose a. set of teeth 24 which are painted on the frame plate. The portion of the plate just below the opening 23 has a lower lip painted thereon so that vertical movement-imparted to the plate will give the impression that the mouth is being opened and closed. The teeth 24 are thus exposed from time to time as the lower lip moves and as the plate 19 may slide on the wire frame 20 horizontally in a manner similar to the upper plate 17 it is obvious that a side movement may'also be imparted to the lip.
The device as a whole may be mounted on the wind-shield of an automobile where the vibrations and rocking movements of same cause the pendulums to swing and impart movement to the lip and eye plates. The device may, therefore, serve as a source of amusement when thus positioned to the occupants of the automobile or it may serve as an advertising device which should attract considerable attention as the constant movements of the eyes and mouth will obviously give the picture a life-like action. The device may also be mounted in a store window or any other suitable place, it being desirable in such instances to place it on a mechanically operated rocker 0r vibrator hai ing suflicient movement to'actuate the pendulums. The portions of the picture plates surrounding the eyes and mouth are preferably turned in, as shown at P in Fig.
3, to permit the eye and mouth plates to form a close register with the openings, the purpose of such a construction being to dis guise as much as possible the fact that the eyes, teeth and lips are formed on separate plates.
\Vhile the plates are here shown as formed with inturned edges 3 to permit the same to be secured with relation to each other, it is obvious that a channel-shaped member or any other suitable means may be employed for this purpose. I also wish it understood that the materials and finish of the several parts of the device may be such as the experience and judgment of the manufacturer may dictate.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letter Patent is 1. In a device of the character described, a plate having a face formed thereon, said plate having openings formed therein in register with the eyes and mouth, a plate mounted behind the face plate having eyes formed thereon, a second plate mounted behind the face plate having a lip formed thereon, and means connected with each of said plates adapted to move said plates inde pendently of each other.
2. In a device of the character described, a plate having a face formed thereon, said plate having a pair of eye openings and a mouth opening formed therein, a stationary frame plate positioned behind the face plate, a plate carried by the frame having eyes formed thereon in register with the eye openings in the face plate, a second plate having a lip formed thereon in register with the mouth opening of the face plate, also mounted on the frame, a weighted lever connected withthe eye plate adapted to move the same when the frame and face plate are .tilted, and a weight actuated mechanism similarly connected with the lip plate.
3. In a device'of the character described, a'pair of interspaced plates having pictures formed on their exterior surfaces, said plates having a pair of eye openings and a mouth opening formed therein, a stationary frame plate positioned between the picture plates, a plate carried by the frame plate having eyes formed thereon in register with the eye openings in the picture plates, a second plate having a lip formed thereon in register with the mouth opening in the picture plates, and means for imparting movement 5. In a device of the character described, a
pair of interspaced plates having pictures formed on their exterior surfaces, said plates having a pair of eye openings and a mouth opening formed therein, a stationary frame plate positioned between the picture plates, a plate carried by the frame plate having eyes formed thereon in register with the eye openings in the picture plates, a second plate having a lip formed thereon in register with the'mouth opening in the picture plates, a pendulum mechanism adapted to impart movement to each plate, and teeth formed on the frame plate in register with the mouth openingsin the picture plates.
6. In a device of the character described, a pair of interspaced picture plates, each plate having a pair of eye openings and a mouth opening formed therein, a stationary frame plate positioned between the picture plates, a sliding frame having vertical movement, a pendulum adapted to impart vertical movement to said frame, a plate U- shaped in cross section slidably mounted on the sliding frame, saidplate having eyes formed thereon adapted'to register with the eye openings in the picture plates, a second sliding frame having vertical movement, a
pendulum mechanism adapted to impart openings fornied therein registerin with my handinthe' presence of twc subscribing the mouth openngshin the picture p ates, a wltnesses.
