Description

J. I. SANFORD.
SAW FILING DEVICE.
APPLICATION min sEPr.19.19lr.
Patented Jan. 7, 1919.
VENTOR UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE. N
JAMES J'. SANFORD, 0F NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
SAW-FILING DEVICE.
To all whom t may concern:
Bc it known that I, JAMES J. SANFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Filing Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked therea on. forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in saw filing devices, the object being.,1r to provide improved means, whereby the angle of the tile with reference to the saw may always be positively and ac curately fixed. and thus any particular pitch given to the teeth without variation, and to simplify the structure of the device. so as to render the same positive, yet effective in operation, simple and inexpensive in construction. and durable in use.
These objects I perform in the preferred embodiment of my invention. which I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings, to which reference is had. and in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding! parts in the. several views.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 represents a plan view of the device: and
Fie. 2 represents a side elevation. partly in section. taken on lines of Fia. 1.
In the drawings. the vise is indicated in dotted lines. to one jaw of which is removablv secured a support 1. preferably of sheet metal. provided with a guide-har 2. prefcrvahlv of rectangular cross-section and nf the shape illustrated' in the drawings. Between the front .surface of the support 1 and the opposite inw of the vise is clamped the saw to be tiled. which is also indicated in dotted lines. .Qlidahlv located upon the guide-bar 2 is a sliding plate 3. the rear ends of which are bent downwardlv as at 5. to form guides, desioned to have sliding epeasrcment with the ton and rear .surface ot the mde-bar 2. Secured to the under side ofthe sliding plate 3 are downwardlv and outwarfllv extending guides 6. designed to have slidine' anfragement with the under surface of the guidebar 2. These guides 6. of which two are emploved. one on each end of the plate 3 and located directly below the downwardly bent Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led September 19, 1917.
Patented Jan. 7, 1919.
serial No. 192,060.
ends or guides 5. may be secured to the under side of the plate 3 in any desired or convenient manner, as for instance, by rivets 7 or the like.
Adjustably secured to the sliding plate 3 apertures 11 formed in the front nl the slidine plate 3 and by means of which the pivoted lever S can be adiusted as the kind of saw to he tiled may reduire.
The file holder 9 is provided with a loncyitudipallv arranoed slot. by means of which the file holder is slidably secured to the lever 8.
The upper .surface of the file holder 9 is recessed to receive the handle l0. of the tile 13. said handle beine: removablv secured to the file holder hv means ot a strap or yoke 14 and a clamping .screw 15.
lll'ith this construction. the tile holder 9 is operated bv moviuo' the same hack and forth on the lever 8. while the sliding` plate 3 is Tioved forward or backward ou the puide-bar Q to carrv the file from one tooth to the next. as each tooth is filed.
It will thus he seen that T have provided a. saw-filing device. in which when assembled. the nossihilitv of the parts becoming` separated hv careless manipulation. has been reduced to a minimum. The parts are of such shape as to lend themselves readilv to manufacure bv the use ot suitable punches and dies from ordinarv sheet metal.
Experience has demonstrated that the or- ,o 'anization above described is a practical and ell'icient one for accomplishing the ends sought bv this invention. The construction mav. however. be varied in detail bv those skilled in such matters. without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
I desire to claim the device as broadlv as the art will permit and with no limitations other than .su'ch as may be expressed in the claims as they may be allowed.
I claim:
1. In a saw filing device. the combination with a support. designed to be secured to one jaw of a vise. a euide bar secured to and arranecd parallel with said support. a plate provided with downwardlv extending guides arrnngfed near one end thereof designed to have sliding;F enazemeut with the top and rear surface of the guide bar, guides secured to the underside of said plate designed to have sliding engagement with the undersurface of said guide bar, said plate being further provided with receiving means arranged near the front thereof, a lever pivotally secured to said late, said lever being providedwith holding means designed to engage With said receiving means arrange near the front of said p ate for holdin the lever in adjusted position, and a file ho der provided with means for securing a file thereto, slidably arranged upon said lever.
2. In a Saw filing device, the cornbination f with a Support, designed to be secured to one jaw of a vise, a uide bar secured to and arranged parallel vvlth said support, a plate provided with downwardly extending guides arranged near one end thereof designed to have sliding engagement with the top and rear surface of the uide bar, guides Secured to the underside o? said plate designed to have sliding engagement with the under-surface of sai guide bar, said plate being further provided With receiving means arranged near the front thereof, a lever pivotally secured to said plate, said lever being provided with holding means designed to engage with said receiving means arranged near the front of said late for holding the lever in adjusted position, and a file holder slidahly arranged upon said lever, by means of a longitudinally arranged slot in said holder, the upper surface of the file holder being recessed to receive the handle of a lle and means eml'iraeing the file holder and file handle for clamping the same together.
This specification si ned and witnessed this 15th day of Septern ier, 1917.
JAMES J. SANFORD.
