RUPERT R. SIBLEY, or ATLANTA, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR 2150 AMERICAN GANNING coerc- RATION, or ATLaNTa GEoRcIA, a CORPORATION or NEW YORK.
STEAMER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUPERT R. SIBLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certainnew and useful Improvementsin Steamers, of which the One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a steamer of the above general character which will be of simple and practical construction and have relatively few par-ts thereby permitting the same to be easily made and inexpensively sold.
A further object is to provide an. apparatus of the above character capable of various uses in connection with canning and preserving" which will be easyand safe to operate. i i v A further object is to provide a steamer or cooker ofthe above type which may be operated with less possibility of burning or injuring the materials treated and which will be highly reliable and efiicient 1111186 and operation.
Other objects will be in part obvious from the annexed drawings and inpart indicated in connection therewith by the following analysis of this invention. j i
This invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, /combination of parts and in the unique relations of the members and in the relative proportioning and disposition thereof, all as more com pletely outlined herein.
To enable others skilled in the art so fully tocomprehend the underlying features thereof that they may embody the same by the numerous modifications in structure and relation contemplated by this invention, drawings depicting a preferred form have been annexed asla part of this disclosure, and in such drawings, like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout all the views, in which- Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of the complete device in operative position when used in steaming or sterilizing containers and foods.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device when used for preserving purposes as when boiling downjellies and the like.

Application filed March 21, 1918. Serial No. 223,734.
gasket 11 of rubber or the like adapted to make a steam tight joint with the bead.
This cover 8 is held in place by means of an articulated ring-12 composed of a plu rality of similarly shaped sections 13 as shown in Fig. 3.
' flange 14 adapted to take under the bead 7 throughout its entire length andat one end is provided with an ripstand ing and overhanging lug 15 adaptedto re celve a set screw 16 which when tight engages the flange 10 immediately above the bead7, thereby to clamp the flange portion 14 of the cover into close engagement-therewith. Adjacent each of the parts 15 isa horizontally disposed lug 17 adapted to be interposed between two lugs 18 on the next adjacent section. These lugs are provided with registering openings through which a pin or other suitable holding means 20 is c c the parts to have a flexible yielding yet non-elastic connection.
Allof these sections 13 are alike in structu're except two which for convenience are illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. One of these has a member 21provided with an eye 22 at one and through which the pin or bolt 23 passes to connect the same with the lugs 18 associated with that member. The opposite end of the member 21' is threaded at 24 and provided with a set' wing nut 25 which when tightened is adapted to coact with a pair of lug-s 26 on the member 15. It will thus be seen that this fastening means after-being positioned around the steamer has its adjacent ends connected by means of this tightening device 21, thus firml clamping the same in the desired fixed p0s1- tion.
As shown in Fig. 1, there is positioned within the steamer a receptacle 30 provided with perforations 31 and supported in any desired manner as by means of blocks 32 from the bottom of the kettle 5, to be used Each section is provided method of use and when sterilizing jars, or the preserved products, just after their sealing. With certain products, such as corn, it is quite essential to have a relatively high temperature for a relatively long length of time. There is, therefore, provided an opening in the top of the cover 8 through which passes a re movable pipe 33 having two branches 34 at its upper end, one of which communicates with the steam gage 35 while the other is connected with a safety valve 36 having adjusting mechanism 37 which can be set to withstand any desired steam pressure up to a safe limit, such as fifteen-pounds, thus to eliminate any danger of explosion of the kettle during operation.
In Fig. 2, the same kettle 5 is used wlth a difi'erent type of cover constituting an inner container d0. This inner container has an outwardly projecting flange 41 at its upper end provided with a gasket 42 adapted to fit down over the bead 7 when the fastening means 12 is in place. The lower part of the kettle is filled with water and as it boils will create steam all about the inner container 40, thereby cooking the contents. As the inner container 40 is sealed in place in a manner similar to the sealing of the cover 8 in Fig. 1, the steam within the kettle 5 will be more or less under pressure andthe temperature vary accordingly. The container 40 is accordingly provided with an elbow 43 communicating with the space between the two containers having a coupling 44 whereby the removable pipe 33 carrying the steam gage and safety valve may be attached thereto. The safety valve by being set for any desired steam pressure w ll, of course, control the temperature to which the contents of the container 40 may be heated.
It is believed from the above that the operation of an apparatus of this character will be clear to those skilled in the art.
when sterilizing cans or jars, for example, the apparatus is assembled as above described and shown in Fig. 1, while when boilingdown syrups, jellies and the like, the ap aratus is arranged as shown in Fig. 2.
t will be seen that the present invention provides a simple and practical steamer or cooker for household use which may be conveniently and easily assembled and operated.
I reahzethat considerable variation is possible in the details of construction and ar- It is sufiicient to state that" rangement of parts without de arting from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not intend to limit myself to the specific form shown and described.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a kettle, a cover member and means for sealing the cover member in place comprising an articulated ring of relatively short pivotally connected channel-shaped members adapted to coact with the kettle and the cover member respectively and means for tightening said ring about the kettle and cover.
In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a kettle, a cover member and means for sealing the cover member in place comprising an articulated ring of similar members adapted to coact with the kettle and the cover. member respectively, and means for adjustably exerting pressure both downwardly and laterally upon said articulated ring.
In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a kettle provided with an outwardly extending flange at its upper end, a cover adapted to rest on said flange, a sealing gasket between the cover and flange, means for sealing the cover member in place comprising an articulated ring of relatively short pivotally connected channel shaped members adapted to coact with the kettle and the cover member respectively, and means for tightening said ring about the kettle and cover.
4. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a kettle, a cover member, means for sealing the cover member in place comprising an articulated ring of relatively short pivotally connected channel shaped members adapted to eoact with the kettle and the cover member respectively, such grooves carried by the ring adapted to press the cover and kettle together, and a threaded connecting bolt adapted to clamp the articulated ring around the kettle.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature the presence of two witnesses.
