To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AOK GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norfolk,
in the county of Norfolk' and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Cylindrical Containers, of which the following is a specifica-tion', reference being had therein tothe accompanying drawing.
`'This invention relates to work holding clamps or supports.
The object of the invention is to provide means for holding a metal drum, bilge barrel or other metalcontainer in a prefectly rigid position, so that the necessary pressure may be applied thereto for the removal therefrom of frozen or tightly sealed plugs, screwthreaded closures, or other iittings. l
The invention is particularly designed for holding drums or containers for storing and shipping gasoline, which are of considerable size and weight and commonly provided with screw-threaded plugs or closures, kand which necessarily have to be screwedl up very tight, and preferably sealed by shellac or other sealing material to make them absolutely proof against leakage, and as thus tightly screwed and sealed, the closures become frozen or stuck by the hardening of the shellac or other sealing material, and it has been found very difiicult to remove such plugs or closures. It is the purpose of this invention to provide a clamp for rigidly holding such container while applying a suitable wrench or other tool for the removal of the plugs or other iittings. The invention consists in a clamp for supporting cylindrical metal containers, comprising a bracket adapted to be secured to a wall or other support, a pair -of clamping bands pivoted to said bracket at one end and adapted to encircle the container, and means engaging the other ends of said bands for tightening said bands about the container.
The invention also consists in certain detailsV o-f construction and combination of parts all substantially as I will proceed to now more particularly set forth and finally claim.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, in the two figures of which like parts are similarl designated, Fig. 1 is a top plan view, showing the clamp in closed and locked position, the clamping bands being shown open for the entrance of the container, in dotted lines, and Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the clamp in closed and locked position,'the container being shown in brokenv lines.
As shown in the drawings, and in its preferred construction, the invention comprises a bracket 1,.f0rmed of a strip of metal bent centrally upon itself to forni an outstanding arm 1a, and having an eye 1b formed at its outer end. f Adapted to be iitted to the bracket 1 and upon opposite sides of the arm 1a are two substantially V-shaped braces 2, formed of sheet metal, and bent at their free ends toform feet 2a to receive bolts or other fastenings for securing the braces to the wall or other support.
Pivotally mounted in and supported by the eye lb of the arm 1a, as by a bolt 3, are two seniicircular bands 14 and 15, the bolt 3 passing through eyes 9 formed in the ends of the bands, and the eye 1b of the arm 1a and provided with a suitable nut or other fastening for securing it in place.
Loosely connected to the end of the band 14, as by means of an eye 5a formed thereon, is a hand lever 5, having hooks 11 and 12 welded or riveted thereto upon opposite sides, the hook 11 being arranged upon the inside a short distance from the free end of the lever, and the hook 12 being located a short distance from the other end of the lever near its connection with the band 14.
`A chain 6 is connected to the free end of the band 15, as by means of an eye 13 riveted or otherwise secured to the band.`
The bracket 1 and the braces 2 are adapted to be secured or fastened to a rigid vertical wall or other support a suitable distance above a floor or foundation, by means of bolts 7 and 8 passing through said bracket and braces, the bolts 8 serving to connect the braces 2 at their inner ends with the base pieces of the bracket 1; the bracket and braces yas thus formed and secured in place afford a rigid support;v for the clamping bands 14 and 15.
The bolt 7 at the right hand orlever sidev of the clamp, is provided with an eye 4 to which is connected a chain 10, adapted to engage the hook 11 to hold or lock the hand lever 5 in clamping position.
In the operation of the device, the chains 6 and 10 are released from their respective hooks 12 and 11, and the clamping bands 14 and 15, moved to open position, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1, and the container resting upon the floor slid in position between the bands. rlfhe bands are then brought into close contact with the container, the lever 5 thrown to a forward position, and the chain tl engaged with the hook 12, and the lever 5 forced or drawn rearwardly, thereby drawing or forcing the. clamping bands into close and tio'ht engagement with the container. rlhe chain 1G is then engaged with the hook l1, thereby locking the lever and holding the clamping bands in tight engagement with the container, and thus holding the container in a rigid position, to be operated upon by the machinist in the application of the necessary tools and pressure required for Yhe removal or application of plugs, closures, or other fittings, to be removed from or applied to the container.
It will be obvious that the use of the chain and hook connections between the clamping bands and lever, and the lever and wall, will permit the use ofthe clamp with containers which may vary somewhat in size or diameter.
lVhat l claim is:
l. A clamp for cylindrical containers, comprising a bracket adapted to be secured to a rigid vertical Wall or other support above a floor or foundation, a pair of clamping bands pivoted at one end to said bracket and open at their outer ends, and means for detachably connecting the outer ends of said bands and for tightening them about a container, the said clamping bands adapted to be disconnected and opened by releasing the connecting means to permit a container resting on the floor to be slid therein and the bands connected and tightened about the container.
2. A clamp for cylindrical containers. comprising a bracket, a pair of braces fixed to and extending upon opposite sides of said bracket, said bracket and braces adapted to be secured to a wall or other support, a pair of semicircular clamping bands pivoted at one end to said bracket, and means secured to the other ends of said bands for tightening them about a container.
3. A clamp for cylindrical containers, comprising a bracket, a pair of V-shaped braces fixed to and arranged upon opposite sides of said bracket and extending outwardly therefrom, said bracket and braces adapted to be secured to a wall or other support, a pair of seinicircular clamping bands pivoted at one end to said bracket, and means secured to the other ends of said bands for tightening them about a container.

A clamp vfor cylindrical containers, comprising a bracket, a pair of V-shaped braces fixed to and arranged upon opposite sides of said bracket and extending outwardly therefrom, said bracket and braces adapted to be secured to a rigid vertical Wall or other support above a ioor or foundation, a pair of seinicircular clamping bands pivoted at one end to said bracket, a. chain secured to the free-end of one of said bands, and a lever pivoted to the free end of the other of said bands and provided with a hook adapted to be engaged by said chain'for tightening the clamping bands about va contalner.
A clamp for cylindrical containers, comprising a bracket, a pair of V-shaped braces fixed to and arranged upon opposite sides of said bracket and extending outwardly therefrom, said bracket and braces adapted to be secured to a rigid vertical wall or Iother support above a floor `or foundation, a pair of semicircular clamping bands pivoted at one end to said bracket, a chain secured to the free en'd of one of said bands, a lever pivoted to the free end of the other of said bands and provided with a hook adapted to be engaged by said chain for tightening the clamping bands about a container, a hook near the free end Vof said le- `ver, and a chain secured to the Wall or other support and adapted to engage said lastinentioned hook to hold said lever and clamping bands in tightened position.
6. A clamp for cylindrical containers, comprising a bracket having an offstanding arm, a pair of braces fixed to said bracket upon opposite sides of said arm and eX- tending laterally and outwardly therefrom, said bracket and braces adapted to be secured to a rigid vertical wall o r other support above a floor or foundation, a pair of semicircular clamping bands pivoted at one end to the ofi'standing bracket arm, means for connecting and disconnecting the free ends of said clamping bands and for tightening said bands about a container, and means for locking the bands in tightened position, the said clamping bands adapted to be disconnected and opened for permitting acontainer resting upon the floor to be slid therein, and connected and drawn to tightened position about the container and locked in such tightened position.
