meoscs.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Horns Doss SAULs,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake Park, in the county of Echols," State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Multiple Passage Reflector; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved multiple passage reflector for an automobile light.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved reflector for engagement with a casing and provided with a multiple of passages whereby the rays from a single light supported in said casing may be reflected in a multiple of directions, one ray straight ahead and two others each extending or reflected to one side, thereby allowing the operator a wide range of vision in front and to the side of the automobile.
A further object of-the invention is to provide improved means for supporting the reflector detachably infsaid casing.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the hood portion of an automobile, showing the reflecting device and its casing as ap plied to a single light or lamp.
' Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4--4 of i Fig. 2. a
Fig. 5 is a detail view of a portion of ,the upper wall of the casing, showing a slot Specification of Letters Patent.
I Patenteddan. 7, 1919.. Application filed May 1a, 1918. Serial no. 235,294.
of the holder casing is open, as indicated at -9. An electric light bulb or lamp 10 issup ported at 11 onthe bottom wall of theh older casing substantially at a point wherethe an-v gularly arranged sidess. of the holder. as. ing merge together, The inner faces of the sides 8 as at 12 are nickle plated orother; l
-wise faced, or mirroreohso as to reflect the videda plurality of open ended tubes, a 1
. central tube 13 and two angularly arranged laterally and forwardly directing tubes 14.
The tubes 14 are open ended as shown at 15,
and are substantially rectangular in cross section, and have their walls 16 in contact with the walls 8, which are provided with openings 17. The exteriors of the walls 16 of said tubes 14 have lugs 18 engaging through the openings 17 Portions of the inner adj acent walls of the tubes 14 are at angles, in fact are disposed at an acute angle, hence the space 19 in which the central tube 13 engages is substantially V-shaped. The inner portions 20 of the side walls of the central tube are arranged at an acute angle and engage the portions 21 of the adjacent walls of the tubes 14. The central tube 13 is open ended, and when its tapered end engages the tapered or V-shaped space 19 the tubes 14 are held in place with their lugs 18 engaging the apertures or openings 17, preventing displacement of said tubes 14. The upper and lower walls of the holder casing have centrally disposed slots 22. The upper and lower Walls of the central tube have upwardly and downwardly extending headed screws 23 passing therethrough, the heads engaging the inner faces of the upper and lower walls of the central tube. The shanks of the screws engage the slots 22, the upper and lower faces of the top, and bottom walls of the holder casing, and on opposite sides of the slots 22 are lugs 24. Thumb nuts 25 engage the screws, and the ends 26 of said thumb nuts are tapered, so as to engage correspondingly shaped faces of the lugs 24, when the thumb nuts are screwed home, to lock the central tube in place. The securing of the central tube keys the tubes 14 in position. The inner faces of the tubes 13 and 14 may also be nickle plated or mirrored if desired, in order to insure the reflection of the rays from the lamp. It is to be observed that any one of the reflecting tubes may be easily removed for repairs if needed, or a new tube inserted. By virtue of the multiple of reflecting tubes, a series of passages is provided for directing the rays from the lamp from three distinct directions, straight ahead, laterally and forwardly to each side.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is The combination with the holder casing of triangular shape having a single lamp supported therein adjacent the rear apex thereof, laterally and forwardly extending ray directing tubes engaging the angularly arranged side walls of the holder, casing, inter-engaging means between said tubes and said side walls of the holder casing, the adjacent walls of said tubes having angular portions arranged V-shaped, thereby pro viding a V-shaped ray directing tube, a central ray directing tube having its rear end V-shaped to engage said V-shaped space to direct the rays forwardly, means for locking the central tube in position, whereby said laterally and forwardly extending tubes are held in place, the holder casing I having its angular rear walls provided with reflectionsurfaces, said tubes also having reflection surfaces.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
