Be it known that 1,*J`0HN F. OGoNNoR,` a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of llllinois, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Roller Side Bearu ings, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in roller side bearings.
As is well known, in the operation of railway cars there is considerable wear on the center bearing plates of the body and truck bolsters so that the relativepositions of the body and truck bolsters vary while the car is in service. To compensate for this wear on the center plates, it is some times customary to introduce shims from time to time.
Due to the wear of the parts and introduction of shims, as above described,` it has been customary to make the anti-friction roller side bearings adjustable to compensate for the variations occurring in service. This necessitates a more or less expensive side bearing due to the adjustable feature.-
The object of my invention is to provide a novel arrangement of roller side bearings for railway cars and wherein the necessity for any adjustment is avoided in compensating for wear at the center plates, above referred to. y
ln the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a` transverse, sectional view of a portion of a railway car showing my improvements in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
In said drawing, 10 denotes a portion of a body bolster of a car to which is secured a center bearing plate 11. Said center bearing plate 11 of the body bolster coperates with a corresponding center bearing plate 12 carried by the truck bolster 13, said center bearing plates 11 and 12 being suitably recessed, as indicated at 14 and 15, to accommodate the usual center or king-pin for pivotally connecting the bolsters.

As clearly appears from the drawing, the rollers 1G are rotatable about vertical axes, which is a departure from the usual custom. To cooperate with the rollers 16 the truck bolster 13 is provided at either end thereof with upstanding built-up sections 18 to the tops of which are secured bearing plates or cast ings 19. Each of said bearing plates 19 is provided on its inner face with a vertically extending bearing surface or wall 20 adapted to coperate with the corresponding antifriction roller 16. Said surface or wall 20 is curved on a radius corresponding to the distance to the center or king-pin so that., as the truck swivels with respect to the car body, the anti-friction roller 16 will always remain in contact with the bearing wall 20. The height of the bearing surfaces or walls 2O is preferably made higher than the width of the anti-friction rollers 16 so that the latter may be moved up or down with respect to the bearing walls 20 and yet at all times remain in contact with the latter.
From the preceding description, it will be seen that there will always be contact between the anti-friction rollers and the bearing plates, regardless of the wear on the center` plates 11 and 12 and evenwhen shims are introduced therebetween inasmuch as the contact between the rollers and the bearing plates is independent of their vertical relation within, of course, the limits pro vided forin the structure. The arrangement is of great simplicity since it employs merely the three necessary elements, a bearing plate, an anti-friction roller, and a supporting casting for the roller; and the bearings will effectively prevent undue swaying of the car body relatively to the trucks the cars pass from a straight section 'of track to a curved section or vice versa.
I claim:
1. In a railway car having body and truck bolsters, the combination with a pair of diametrically disposed anti-friction rollers mounted on one of said holsters and each rotatable about a vertical axis; of a pair of separated coperating bearing plates carried by the other bolster, each of said bearing plates having its hearing' surface extending vertically and engageahle With said roller.
2. In a railway car having hody and truck holsters, the combination with a pair of diametrioally disposed anti-friction rollers carried hy one of said holsters and each rotatable ahouta Vertical axis; of a pair of separated hearing plates. carried hy the l0 other of said holsters, each of said hearing plates having the wearing` surface thereof extending vertically and curved on a radius of a length Corresponding to the distanceA from the axis of the pivotal connection of the holsters and with its center coinciding 1.3
