Beit known that I. Jens F. OCoNNom This invention relates to improvements in universally adjustable roller side bearings.
The object of the invention is to provide an anti-friction side hearing more particularly adapted for use on railway cars and wherein the anti-friction roller is rotatable about a horizontal axis and also pivotally mounted with respect to two other axes perpendicular to each other and to the axis of rotation.
- In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view. taken centrally of the improved side bearing and illustrating portions of the body and truck bolsters of a car "in section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view, taken substantially on the line 22 of Figfl.
In said drawing. 10 denotes the under portion of a body holster and 11 the upper opposed portion of a. truck'holster of a car.
The improved side bearing. designated generally by the reference A, comprises a base casting 12 riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the truck holster, said base easting having a pair of triangular shaped upstanding side walls 13-43. The inner faces of the side walls 13-13 atthe top thereof, are vertically recessed. as indicated at fit-44, to receive the reduced ends 1515 of a non-- rotatable axle 16. The improved anti-friction roller. as shown. comprises an outer element 17. an intermediate elen'ient 18. and an inner element 19. The inner element 19 comprises two halves. 19 and 19 securely riveted together as by rivets 20. said halves 19 and 19 being provided with opposed semi-cylindrical recesses 21 which. when the halves are riveted together. are adapted to form bearings for a pair of diametrically disposed inwardly extending trunnions E2222 formed on the inner side of the intermediate element 18. With this arrangement, it apparent that the intermediate element is oscillatable with respect to the inner element 19 about an axis perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the inner clement 19. a y
The intermediate roller element 18, which is preferably in the form of a casting, is provided on its exterior with a pair of outwardly extending trunnions 23-23 which are diametrically disposed and ofi set 90. from the inwardly extending trunnions 22. The trunnions 23 are seated in suitable bearings Pr-24 formed in the two halves 17 and 17 of the outer roller element. siiid halves 17 and 17 being secured rigidly together as by rivets 25 .in a manner similar to that employed in holding the two halves of the inner element 19 together. With the arrangement just described. it is obvious that the outer element 17 is oscillatable with respect to the intermediate element 18 about an axis which is not only perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the inner element 19 but also perpendicular to the axis of the trunnions 22. As will be understood. there is sutlicicnt. clearance between the outer and intermediate elements of the roller and between the intermediate and the inner elements. to permit the oscillation or adjustment hereinbefore referred to.
\Vith the arrangement above described. it is obvious that the outer bearing portion of the anti-friction roller which engages the body bolster is rotatable in the usual manner and in addition is permitted a universal adjustment about a pail-of axes whiclnare perpendicular to each other and also perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the roller as a whole so that the anti-friction roller is adapted to accommodate itself to all conditions of service on a car.
I claim:
1. In a side bearing, the combination with a retaining member. of an anti-friction roller supported by said retaining member, said anti-friction roller comprising three elements. all of said elements being relatively adjustable under load to thereby provide universal adjustability.
2. in an anti-friction bearing, the combination with a retaining member. of an axle carried by said member, an inner roller element rotatable on said axle. and concentric intermediate and outer roller elements mounted on the first named element, said intermediate and outer elements being pivotally mounted with respect to said inner element.
3. As an article of manufacture, an antifriction roller, said roller comprising an innen element, an intermediate element pivotally connected to the inner element, and an oii er element pivotally connected to said intermediate element.
"4.11In aside bearing, the combination with a base casting having a fixed axle therein, of an anti-friction rollermounoed on said axle, said anti-friction roller comprising three concentric elements all movablewith respect to each other. 1

In an anti-friction bearing, the combination with a retaining casting, of an antifriction roller rotatably mounted on, said casting, said anti-friction roller comprising an intermediate element having a pair of 20 inwardly extending lugs and a pair of outwardly extending lugs offset 90 from each other, an outer element pivotally supported by the outwardly extending lugs, and an inner element pivotally mounted on the inwardly extending. lugs.
