a citizen or the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State cgt illinois, have invented a certain new and j i @tui improvement in Roller-Bearings, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference beinef had to the accompanyinn` drawings, forming a part ot this speeilication.
This invention relates to improvements in roller bearings. Y' t ln the operation of rolling stock and more particularly steam roads, it is customary `to provide anti-friction roller side bearings between the truck and body bolsters of the cars to minimize the friction when the trucks swivel or swing relatively to the car bodies as the cars pass over curved portions of the tracks, and tor the further purpose ot preventing undue tilting or swaying of the car bodies when the cars strike a curve or pass trom a curve to a tangent. Due to the wear on the engaging parts of the body and truck holsters of the cars and also due to distortion which sometimes occurs, it has been found necessary or desirable in a great many instances to provide means in the roller side bearings to compensate for the changing conditions resulting from the wear or distortion above mentioned. l-leretofore, so far as l am aware, the general practice in thus compensating for the variable conditions mentioned, has been to mount the anti-tric-` tion roller or rollers either in a cradle or an equivalent manner in such a way that the roller could adjust itself bodily about an axis transverse to the bolster on which it is mounted. As will be apparent, this involves extra parts with consequent increased cost of manufacture.
An object of my invention is to provide an antifriction roller suitable tor side bearings of railway cars, which consists of a minimum number of parts and wherein means are provided for compensating for the variable conditions above indicated without employing any rockable or adjustable mounting for the anti-friction roller,

The base casting A, as shown, is in .the form of a hollow rectangular box or frame having a `lower wall 12 provided with suitable .flanges lby which it can be riveted to the truck bolster; upwardly extending end walls 14e-4t suitably recessed at the bottom,

The bearing plate C is curved lengthwise, as clearly indicated in Fig. 3, on a radius corresponding to the distance from said bearing plate to the kingpin by which the body and truck holsters are usually connected. @n its under face, the bearing` plate C is made concave as clearly indicated at 2'2 in Fig. 2, the radins of said concave surface Q2 being the same as the radius defining the convex bearing surface 17 of the roller ll.
ln normal position of the parts` there is a slight space left between the roller B and the bearing plate C, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. When the two holsters approach eac-h other due to the car changing its direction of motion or as the car body sways, it is evident that the roller and hearing plate C will come into engagement, and due to the fact that the bearing surfaces of the roller and plate are struck with equal radii, there will he complete contact between the roller and the bearing plate foi` the full width of the roller. The length (not the radius) of theare of the concave hearing surface 22 is somewhat greater than the length (not the radius) of the arc of the `bearing surface 17 of the roller so that, as
the angular relation between the'holsters 10 and l1 varies due to wear -or distortion of any of the car parts, there will also remain a full contact between the roller and the bearing plate' C, the action being the same as though the bearing plate C were tted onthe roller B and shifted lthereon about a horizontal axis perpendicular to the axis of the axle 18. In this manner, I obtain the same 'effect asis obtained by those roller side hearings lnow o n the market which employ a rockable cradleor mounting for the anti-frictionrolle'r, and itis obvious that my structure is much simpler,- comprises fewer parts, less likely to get out of order,
and ismuchv cheaper both in first cost and in maintenance.
Although I havelierem shown and described what I now consider the preferred manner of carrying out the invention, the
same is merely illustrative `and I conteinplate all changes and modifications that come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
1. In roller bearing adapted for use between two members relatively rockably mounted; the combination with a retaining casting in which said roller is rotatably mounted, said retaining casting being adapted tohe secured to one of said members; and a bearing surface on the other of said members, said hearing surface being curved about the same axis as that aboutwhich the two members are adapted to rotate relatively7 said hearing surface for the cooperating engaging surface of the roller being complementally curved in transverse section to thereby insure full contact between the roller and the bearing surface.
2. In a roller bearing adapted to be mounted between the body and truck holsters of a car; the combination with a retaining member adapted to be secured to one of said holsters; of an anti-fri tion roller rotatably mounted in said retaining member about a relatively fixed axis, said roller having a bearing surface curved transversely thereof; and a bearing surface on the other of said holsters, said bearing surface beingr curved transversely thereof to correspond with and fit the hearing surface of said roller.
3. In a roller bearing adapted for use hetween body and trui k holsters of a car; the combination with a retaining member adapted to he secured to one of said holsters; au anti-friction roller rotatably mounted in said retaining member about a relatively xed axis, said roller having the bearing surface thereof convexed` transversely; of a bearing surfaceon the other of said holsters,

In a roller side hearing for railway cars, the combination with a base casting adapted to be secured to one of the car holsters;` of an anti-friction roller rotatably mounted in said base casting about a relatively ixed axis, said roller having the bearing surface convexed transversely thereof; of a hearing plate adapted to he secured to the opposed car bolster, ,said hearing plate heilig curved longitudinally on a radius corresponding to the distance from said bearing plate to the pivotal connection of the car holsters, said hearing plate heilig also curved transversely thereof to lit said curved i hearing surface of the roller.
