DIEtdFT-RIGGING GHEIEK-PLATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 16', 1916. Serial No. 131,616.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN F. OCoN oR, a citizen of the United States, residin at Chicago, in the county of (look and tate of, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draft Rigging Cheek-Plates, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to draft rigging cheek plates.
One object of the invention is to provide a cheek plate or stop casting for draft riggings having great strength and of substantially uniform thickness throughout, the casting being provided with a series of horizontal convolutions extending from end to end of the casting to give the plate the efiect of great thickness without actually thickening the metal, all of the stops of the casting" being formed by vertical walls spaced from said horizontal convolutions and connected thereto by horizontal webs.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a stop casting having a series of horizontally extending con'volutions but which is free from vertical convolutions.
in the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a stop casting showing one embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1. And Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 are vertical sectional views taken on the lines 3-3, 4-4, 5--5, 6-6 and 7-l', respectively, of
%u said drawing, the stop casting or cheek plate is designated generally by the reference A and is shown. as of the tandem type having front main stop 10, rear main stop 11, center main stop 12 and intermediate stops 13 and 1 1. The casting consists of a web of substantially uniform thickness which is convoluted throughout its entire height with alternately outwardly and inwardly facing vconvolutions 15, 16, 17, id
and 19. Said horizontal convolutions may be considered as formed by alternately bending the web inwardly and outwardly, thus giving the casting great strength against longitudinal strains and transverse bending strains. At the same time, the casting is given'the eflect of great thickness sothat the hearing or wearing surfaces for the ends of the followers are spaced 2. considerable distance from the planes of the draft sills to which the stop casting is adapted to be secured. By this method, the stop castings are adapted to be applied to metal draft sills which have been substituted for wooden draft sills on old gears and the old gears proper re'c'noployed. Where the casting is riveted to the sills, the horizontal convolu stops l0, 11, 12, 13 and 14:. Each, of said vertical webs 21, 22, 23, 2tand 25 is connected to the body portion of the casting by a series of horizontal connecting webs 2626, there being six of said horizontal webs 26 for each vertical web or wall. As clearly appears from Figs. 2 to 6 inclusive, the vertical web 23 is spaced farther from the body of the casting than the end vertical webs 21 'and 22 and the latter in turn are spaced farther from the body ofthe casting than the vertical webs 24: and 25. This is done in order to make the center posts deeper than theend posts and the latter deeper than the limiting stops for the well known purpose of permitting swinging movement of the yoke of the draft rigging about the center post as a fulcrum.
l: claim:
