Specification of Letters Patentf Patented Dec. 31, 1918 Application filed August 8, 1918. Serial No. 248,141.
being formed of sections hingedly connected with the body portion of the device and arranged in .overlapping relation, both sections being provided with side flanges and the flanges off one section being adapted for straddling engagement with the flanges of the other section.
. An important object is the-provision of a casket of this character in which the cover sections are rovided with retaining members upon which ornamental draperies may be hung and upon which wreaths or other floral pieces may be suitably supported, one of these retaining members further serving as a handle whereby the uppermost covered section may be raised and lowered, and the endmost retaining members serving as stops to limit the swinging of the cover sections.
Another object is the provision of a casket of this character which will be extremely ornamental in appearance, comparatively simple and inexpensive in manufacture, efficient in service and a general improvement of the art.
(Vltll the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the casket.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the cover closed in full lines and open, in dotted lines.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the numeral 5 designates the body portion of t e device whi h includes a bottom wall 6, side walls 7 and end walls 8. In the practical carrying out of my invention. this body portion may be formed of any suitable material though I preferably construct it of celluloid which may be either transparent or opaque, as desired. It will be noted that i one end wall 8 is higher than the other end wall whereby thetop of the body portion will be inclined as shown. Suitable handles 9 are securedat any desired location upon the side or end walls and the exterior as well as the interiorof this'body portion may be suitablyfornamented In the eventthat this body :portion is formed of opaque material, it is; preferable that the interior be lined with; suitable Y ornamental fabrics whereby to present a very pleasing appear ance, f
The .topotthis body portion 5. which forms the-receptacle in whichthe corpse is v disposed, is" closed by two suitable-cover sections 10 and 11- which are pivotally connect ed with theside 7 adjacent the end .walls8 as shown at 12 and 13. The cover ection 10 is of less length than thelength of the body portion 5 so as to extend only partly of the length thereof and is provided at its sides with flanges 14 adapted to snugly embrace outer surfaces of the side walls 7 The section 11 is the same in construction as the section 10 and is adapted to engage over the section 10 with its flanges 15 disposed outwardly of the flanges 14.- on the section 10. The sections 10 and 11 are each longer than one half the length of the body portion 5 whereby they will be arranged in overlapping relation when closed.
In order to provide means whereby drapery of any suitable kind or whereby floral pieces may be suspended from the casket, I provide retaining members 16 and 17 formed on the pivoted ends of the sections 10 and 11 and preferably angular shaped as shown whereby the drapery or floral decorations may be readily engaged thereon. These retaining members also serve as stops to limit outward swinging of the cover ections.
At the free end of the cover section 11, I provide an upwardly extending member 18 which is angularly shaped as shown and which extends toward the retaining member 17. This member 18 is preferably formed from the material of the cover section 11 by splitting the cover se tion 11 inwardly from its free end and bending the vention as reduced to a simple form, it will of course .be readily understood that the entire device may be made as ornamentalas desired and that various alterations in the shapes, izes and proportions of the parts may be resorted to and still be Within the spirit oftheinvention. The construction of the device from celluloid, while not absolutely essential, is preferred'for the reason that celluloid is an extremely light rnaterial {and possesses the further advantage of betransparent, whereby afull view of the corpsewit'hin the casket may be obtained at "all times;
javing thus idescrihed' my invention it hi fi 1 if. A; burialfcasl'ret comprising a reot'angw 'l ar open topped body forming a receptacle, a -pa ir of cover sections ivotally; connected :with thesides of said body portion adjacent e. en s? her a d a ran ed i Y r P- ping relation, flanges formed on the longitudinal edges of said cover sections, the
flanges' on ione section beingdis posed outwardly of the flanges on, the, other section when sa d sections are. overlapped, upwardly extending angular retaining vmemfbers forined on the; pivoted; of said 5' Copies of thiafpatent may be obtainedjfor cover sections and engageable with the adjacent end wall of the body for holding said cover sections in upwardly inclined divergent relation when said covers are swung to open position, and a similar retaining member formed on the free edge of the overlap- ;pingsection, all of said retaining; members I for holding said cover sections in elevated position I when open, said retaining members ngular 1n cross section whereby to 7 being serveas supports for decorations.
testimony whereof lliafli'x' my signature.
