1,289,937. j f y To all/whom t may concern.' v
' Be it known that I, ANTHONY CQSHADE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the countyof Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and vuseful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
, This invention relates to Wrenches and has for its object the provision of a wrench ofr'simple and durableA construction, which may be easily and quickly adjusted for use and when vso adjusted-will Abeheld against Another object of the invention is the provision of a novel form of engagement between the movable jaw and the shank of the wrench, resulting in a positive lock between these two elements, While other novel means are provided for quickly and conveniently releasing the jaw from such enagement, so as to permit of the latter bemg slid along the shank.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a wrench embodying rthe present invention, the movable jaw being shown locked to the shank;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the jaw locking means disengaged from the shank; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on'the line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The invention is susceptible of application to wrenches of various forms and designs. the wrench illustrated in the drawings including a shank 10. which has located at one end thereof a stationary jaw 11. Removablv secured to the opposite end of a shank-10 is a handle 12, screws or other fastening devices 13 being` emploved for holding the handle upon the shank. This permits of conveniently inserting the shank through the opening in the movable jaw 14.
The movable jaw 14 is provided with a hollow extension 15, which forms a housing or the mechanism for locking` the said jaw in position upon the shank 10. This mechanism includes a slidably mounted elongated member 16 of substantially the same` size v WRENCH.

and shapeL as'the inner chamber `1'( formed within the extension 15.v One face ofthe member 16 is provided with teeth 18,'for engagement with teeth 19 formed in one edge of theshank 10. The teeth 19 are disposed transversely of the shank 10 and have. their outer edges located within the plane 'of side flanges 20, these flanges contacting with the wall 21 of the opening in the movable jaw so that ,the saidwwall will not Acontact with the teeth 19. This prevents the teeth from becoming yworn or rounded due to the movement of the jaw 14 along the shank.
Pivotally mounted upon studs 22 projecting inwardly from a removable closure plate 23 carried by the movable jaw are levers 24. These levers are pivotally mounted intermediate their ends as shown, at 25 and have their inner ends pivotally secured together and to the inner end o f a plunger 26, the outer end of which projects through an opening inthe plate 23. The opposite ends of the levers 24 are engaged with links 27, which are carried by each end of the member 16. Interposed between the member 16 and the inner end of the plunger 26 is a. spring 28, one end of which lies within a socket 29 in the member 16 and the opposite end being secured to the plunger 26 in any approved manner.
By pressing inwardly upon the ange 26, the levers 24 are rocked upon their pivots 25 and through the medium of the links 27 draw the member 16 toward the plunger and away from engagement with the teeth 19, this action being against the tension of the spring 28. When pressure upon the plunger 26 is released the said spring will immediately return the member 16 into the engafrement with the teeth 19.
The closure plate 23 is removably secured in position and for this purpose one end of the plate enters a groove 30 located transversely of the j aw 14, while the opposite end of the plate is secured to the extension 15 through the medium of a suitable fastening device 31.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A wrench embodying a shank having a stationary jaw located at lone end thereof, and transversely disposed teeth formed upon .onel edgejof" the shank, a jaw slidably an inwardly movable plunger projectnscl;Y
through one edge of the movable jaw,- a spring interposed between the inner end4 of said plunger andl the elongated toothed member for holding the latter engaged with the teethof the Shank and for projecting the plunger outwardly an'dmeans including oppositely eX-ter'iding leverspivotally secured to theY inner end of the plunger and connect*- edto the toothed member, whereby'an in'- ward movement of the plunger will withdraw the said member from engagement with the shank. y
2". A wrench embodying a shank having a: stationary jaw located at one` end thereof, and transversely disposed teeth formed capas f. this 'patent' may we' obtain/ed 'm uponone edge ofthe shank', .a .jawv s'li'dably mounted upon said shank, an elongated toothed member carried by the movable jaw and engageable with the teeth of the shank, an .inwardly movable plunger projecting through one edge of the movable jaw, a Spring interposed between the inner end of said plunger and the elongatedv toothed iembe'r for' holding the latter engaged with the tooth of the shank and for projecting the plunger outwardly and means* including oppositely et'e'ndi'ng [levers pivotally" securedI to-` the ifnne'rv endl of theplunger and li'nl''s connecting said. levers to the-'toothed member, vwhereby an inwardmovementof the plunger will lwit'l'nlraw the saidmember from engagement with the shank.
. In testimony whereofy I a-ix my signature.
