Be it known that I, JACOB PLA'r'r, a citizen ofthe United'St'ates, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and-State of New'Yo rk, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bookbinding Apparatus, of which the following is aspecification. Y
My improvements relate to so called case machines in which the side-boards are applied to the covering, as in Letters Patent No.' l3, l53, of January 23, 1894, for machine ;-for making book covers, Letters Patent No. 580,111, of April 6,-1897, for
machine for making book covers, and Letters Patent No. 661,763, of November 13, 1900, for book cover machine, and the object is-toinsure the accurate alinement and delivery of the superposed covering and. side boards to the press mechanism which effects their final attachment to each other. Heret'ofore' much loss and inconvenience has resulted from the lack'of adequate lateral control of the cover while being fedto the press platen or table, the edges of the boards frequently contacting with side walls of the press, causing the buckling and distortion of the cover, and rendering it not only useless but necessitating the stopping of the apparatus in order to effect its removal.
I obviate this difficulty by my invention which consists essentially in theprovision of yielding rockable guards which control and sustain the edges of the covering until the latter is well advanced upon the press platen, and between, and in substantial parallelism with, the side members thereof, allas hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings I show correlated parts of what is known in the book binding trade as a' case machine, sufficient to illustrate the practical embodiment of my invention in apparatus of thecharacter designated, other parts of the machine being omitted.

F, represents the feed cylinder and f,'the gage fingers by which the cover-sheet, with an adhesive'applied to the side that becomes the inner face thereof, is presented to the pinching action of the grippers g, g, which latter act in conjunction with the reciprocating bar 9, on which they are mounted to transfer said cover-sheet from said cylinder F, to the assembling table A, in the usual manner. H, represents the ordinary swinging suction head by which the side boards of the cover are lifted and transferred from the table h, to the adhesive up.- per side of the cover-sheet on the assembling table A in a manner wellknown in the art. D, is the reciprocatory discharge head or forwarderiby which the cover-sheet S, with the side boards 5,1), (see Fig. 4) imposed thereon, is transferred from the assembling table A, to the usual water cushion platen p, of the ordinary press mechanism P, by which the cover-sheet S, and boards I), b, are made to adhere in smooth relationship,% p, 3?, representing the usual barbed feed and discharge disks, 33 the pressure plate, and p the actuating toggles, all of ordinary construction and operation.
The reciprocation of the forwarder D, is accomplished by the usual endless belt and cam mechanism indicated generally by the letter 01, in the first three figures of the drawings. The press mechanism is operated in the usual way by the rod 39 actuated by the cam Q, Fig. 3.
In practical operation the grippers g, g, sometimes" fail to take even hold of the edge of the cover-sheet S, presented by the gage fingers f,'-resulting in the deposit of the sheet S, in bad shape on the assembling table A; andthe side cover boards Z), Z), are sometimes warped so that the forwarder D, cannot control them effectually. As a result of one or the other or both of these causes, the cover blank is apt to contact with the inner extremity (29*) of one or the other of the side members 32 which flank the platen p, of the press mechanism P, thereby buckling up and distorting the cover blank, rendering it useless, and'(what is of even more consequence) clogging the 1 apparatus, which means the stoppage of the machine until the obstruction can beyremoved. In fact this is one. of the serious defects of this type of case machine, representing a problem heretofore unsolved in a practical manner.
I accomplish. the desired result by my yieldable and rockable lateral guards R, It, one positioned at the front side, and. the other at the rear side, of the assembling table A, as shown in Fig. 1, by reference/to which it will also be seen that these guards R, R, are likewise both positioned well within the planes of the inner sides of the side members 11*, which flank the press platen ;7), thus reducing the chance of possible contact of the cover blank S, b, b, with the inner corners p", 39* of said side members 29*] But the main feature of my invention consists in rockably mounting the lateral guards R, R, in such manner that their inner extremities control the cover blank beyond the points of pivotal support of said guards and until the advancing edge of the cover blank is upon the platen p, and well beyond the inner. ends 39", of the side members 9 of the platen frame,
To accomplish this result the inner end 1, of each lateral guard B, may be mounted snugly'but movably (as in Figs. 5, 6 and 7) in a transverse slot 0, formed for it by pref erence in a cap block C, attached to the framework of the apparatus between the position of the assembling table A, and the press platen 7), as shown more particularly in Figs. 1 and 2. Said inner ends r, of the lateral guardsR, are retained within said slots 0, by means of pins 0, 0 passing through slots 1", 1", formed for them in the guards R, sai d pins 0, 0 being driven into position through the end of the cap block C. In this construction spiral springs 0. 0 are seated in recesses 0 0 formed for them in the cap block (see particularly Fig.5) and bear agamst the under edges of the lateral guards R, tending constantly to hold the latter in elevated horizontal extension as shown in Figs. 5 and 9, with the pins 0', 0 occupying the bottoms of the slots 1", 1". A like result is attained in the modification shown in Fig. 8, in which a single U-spring 0", 1s substituted for the twin-coil springs tend through the slots 9 r, inthe guard R,
and form the equivalent of the pins 0, 0
shown in'Fig. 5. 'It is to be understood that V inFigs. 9 to 15 inclusive the spring. supports for the inner ends of the guards R, are omitted for simplicity and clearness of illustration, Figs.'5 and 8 being relied upon to indicate the principle of resilient support involved.. c
In either case the springs atford yielding supports which tend constantlyto hold the lateral guards in normal position, but allow them to be depressed by the forwarder D, as it advances withthe cover blankinfront of it,the outer or free ends ofthe lateral guards B, being of course curved downward to allow the forwarder D, to contact with and depress the guards lit, gradually, as in Figs. 9 and 10. As will be understood by reference to Figs. 10 and 511, the guard R, rocks on the rear pin 0', until the forwarder when the rear end of the guard is depressed, but this rear depression does not occur until the advancing end of the cover blank S, has passed onto the press platen p, and beyond the edges 39*, 39*, of the side members p, 12 of the press frame, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, thereby obviating all danger of serious lack of alinementof the cover blanl and insuring its presentation to the press mechanism in due form.
. It will be noted in this connection that it is the rear pins 0, which perform the important function. in conjunction with the resilient. support below, of. pivotal guides .for the rear portions r, of the lateral guards It, until the forwarder D, has advanced sufiiciently to depress said rear portions 9', of the guards R. This will be understood by a comparative examination of Figs. 9 to 13 inclusive, by which it will be seen that until so finally depressed by the forwarder D, the rear portions 1, of the guard R, protrude above the plane of the advance ofthe cover blank and'hence 'gbviously safeguard the latter until well on its way to and partly upon the press platen p, as above set forth. And this protrusion of the rear portions 1*, of the guards R, until'the safe passage Of the cover'blank is assured, is thedistinctive feature of my invention, effected by the resilient support and by the'rear slots 1*, controlled by the pins 0. Hence, obviously, a like result may be attained by the modification shown in Fig. 14, in which the forward slot 7', and pin 0 are omitted', a stop 1*, on the guard R, being substituted for the pin 0 said stop r contacting with a sh0ulCler c or equivalent, on the cap block C, when the guard is raised to normal hori.--

In other words, the rear slots 2", and the resilient support afforded the rear portions 9', of the lateral guards enable the latter to control the cover blank until the main portion thereof is beyond such points (0') of pivotal support of the guards,-a result not heretofore attained in the art, and an important one for the reasons heretofore set forth.
It is obvious that like results can be attained by afiixing the fulcrum pin 0, to the rear portion 1", of the guard R, and bv form ing the equivalent of the slot r, in the side walls of the transverse slots 0, as indicated in Fig. 15, so that I do not limit myself in this respect, the essential features being the resilient support for the rear portions of the guards, as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 8, and the slot and pivot connection of parts which admit-s of the rockable depression of the guards as and for the purpose set forth.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In book binding apparatus of the char acter designated, in combination with the assembling table and press platen, and with the mechanism for transferring the cover blank from said assembling table to said press platen, yicldable and rockable lateral guards flanking the path of transfer and normally protruding above the plane thereof, for the purpose described.
In book binding apparatus of the character designated, in combination with the. assembling table and press platen, and with the mechanism for transferring the cover blank from said assembling table to said press platen, lateral guards flanking the path of transfer and normally protruding above the plane thereof, the rear portion of each guard resting on a resilient support, and being pivotally controlled by means which admit of the depression of the said lateral guards by the said transfer mechanism, for the purpose described.
3. In book binding apparatus of the character designated, in combination with the assembling table and press platen, and with the mechanism for transferring the cover blank from said assembling table to said press platen, lateral guards flanking the path of transfer and normally protruding above the plane thereof, the rear portion of each guard resting on a resilient support and being formed with a transverse slot, and a retaining pin extending through said slot, for the purpose described.
4. In book binding apparatus of the character designated, in combination with the assembling table and press platen, and with the mechanism for transferring the cover blank from said assembling table to said press platen, lateral guards flanking the path of transfer and normally protruding above the plane thereof, the rear portion of each guard resting on a resilient support and being formed with a transverse slot, and a retaining pin extending through said slot, together with means acting in conjunction with the said transverse slot and retaining pin to limit the upward thrust of the forward portion of the guard while admitting of the depression thereof, for the purpose described.
5. In book binding apparatus of the char acter designated. in combination with the assembling table and press platen, and with the mechanism for transferring the cover blank from said assembling table to said press platen, lateral guards flanking the path of transfer and normally protruding above the plane thereof, the rear portion of each guard resting on an elastic resilient support and being fulcrumed on a pivot passing through a slot elongated to allow the guard to be depressed, together with means acting in conjunction with said transverse slot and pivot to limit the upward thrust of the forward portion of the guard while admitting of the depression thereof,
for the purpose described.
