Description
f STATES ALEXANDER T. DE PUY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRINTERS GALLEVS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,954, dated July 16, 1872 antedated J' une 28, 1872 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER T. DE PUY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use anew and Improved Lock-up Galley for Printers; and that the following is afull, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a front View of my improved lock-up galley. Fig.2 is a sectional view of a portion ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the threaded spindles and square-headed bolts. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a part of the galley.
In the drawing, like parts ot' the invention are pointed out by the same letters of. reference.
The nature of the present invention consists in the construction, as more fully hereinafter set forth, of an improved lock-up galley for printers use in locking up type from which it is desired to take proof,77 or for forms which are to be kept standing in the printing office; the object of the invention being the production ot' a lock-up galley simple in construction and easily manipulated.
To enable those skilled in the arts to makeand use the invention, I will describe the construction and operation of myimproved lockup galley.
A shows a galley constructed in the usual manner, which galley may be made of Wood and metal combined, or, if desired, of metal entirely. Upon one side, in the present instance, of the lining B and of the galley A are placed a series of openings, in which are inserted the threaded spindles a, having secured upon them the ratchet-wheels b, placed very nearly at one end of the spindle a, the side strip of metal c of the galleyA being cut away for the reception of the ratchet-wheels b, so that they may be free to turn in these recesses. C shows a series of square-headed bolts employed in connection with the threaded spindles et. The shanks of the bolts are made hollow and have cut upon their interior a thread which engages with the thread cut upon the spindles, and the heads of the bolts are made square, that the bolts may be advanced or drawn back, as desired, without causing the bolts to turn round.
Such being the construction, the operation is as follows: The type from which a proof is to be taken, or the form to be kept standing, is placed upon the galley and a side-stick parallel upon both sides is placed alongside of the body ot' type, and between it and the square-headed bolts. The ratchet-wheels b may then be turned by hand or in any convenient manner, so that the threaded spindles with which the threaded Shanks of the bolts engage will cause the bolts to be thrown out from within the side of the galley and to be brought to bear against one side of the side-stick, thus firmly and securely locking and holding the type in position. To release the type an opposite motion may be given to the ratchet-wheels, and the threaded spindles will engage with and withdraw the bolts from pressure against the side-stick.
It will be observed that the bolts are easily and rapidly advanced or withdrawn, as desired, and that the pressure ofthe bolts upon the sidestick will be ample to hold the type firmly in position. The additional cost of my improvement adds but little to the present price ofthe galley.
Having now set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Y The combination, with a galley, A, of the threaded spindles a, having lupon them the ratchet Wheels b and the threaded squareheaded bolts C, when the same shall be construoted and operated substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
ALEXANDER T. DE PUY.
In presence of- A. SIDNEY DOANE, WM. HAsTlNGs.
