GEORGE G. FRELIN'GI-IUYSEN, OF MORRIS COUNTY,
NEW JERSEY, A-SSIGNOR TO STEEL UTILITIES, INCORPORATED, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
7 METHOD OF DATING COMMODITY-PACKAGES.
Patented Dec. a1, 1918.
Original application filed October 1 1 1916, Serial No. 125,120.. Divided and this application filed February Improvements in Methods of Dating Commodity-Packages, of which the following is a specification. 1
The invention relates to a new method of dating commodity packages whereby the manufacturer will have a permanent record upon such commodity packages of the dates when filledl The objects'and advantages of the present invention will be set forth in part and in' part will? be obvious herefrom, the same being attained through the various steps and succession of steps pointed out in the appended claims. The invention consists'in the novel method, steps and improvements herein shown and .described.
This application is a divisionof my application Ser. 'No. 125,120, filed Octoberll, 1916. '1 The accompanying drawings, herein re ferred t'o,'and constituting a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment'of the invention, and together'with the description serve to explain the principles t-hereo Of the drawings 1 1 'Figure 1 is an end elevation of a machine which may be employed in practising the invention;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line AB of Fig. l';and;
Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate labels which are the product of the method or process of the present invention.
In packaging many commodities it'is desirable for the manufacturer or purveyor to mark the package with the date of filling and sealing, and it is frequently desirable to do this by placing a chronological mark ona label applied to the package, and this is especially desirable in the cases of fluid, semifluid and other commodities which are packaged in bottles, tins and the like. It is also lines ofmerchandise universally deciphera l -dat ng by p tgmt ngihe u er l .01
'marks in addition to 15 1918, Serial No. 217,333.
the day of month and year in the label is objectionable, as consumers are thereby frequently groundlessly y prejudiced against commodities.
It is further desirable that the dating being undecipherable by the consumer shall be unobtrusive or practically unnoticeable to the casual observer of the label. Many commodities are packaged with artistic and ornamental labels aflixed, which have great value in enhancing the attractiveness and desirablity of the goods and increasing the demand among consumers for the particular brand, and the present invention dates the labels so as to preserve their attractiveness for the purposes stated.
It is also an object of the present inven tion to provide in connection with the fore-- going, a method of dating the labels which will produce a label adapted for rapid, easy and reliable handling in connection with the aflixing thereof to the commodity packages. 'Itfhas been the practice to date labels by.
punching or perforating numerals therethrough corresponding to the month, day and vear. but this is obiectionable because it causes adjacent labels to stick together and thus interferes with and stops the label affixing machine, causing a waste of both time and labels. Furthermore. this old way of so marking the labels istediousand expensive, as the labels can be punched only in small groups or bunches, idly dulled and must be'frequently replaced, all of which is obviated by the present method.
By means of the method or process of the present invention, the labels may be marked in packs or bundles of thousands, the marking of'a group of one or more thousands of labels consuming very little labor, and sufficient labels for the daily output of even the largest factories may be thus chronologically marked in a few minutes of time. Further by this invention the marking of .the labels does not cause them to stick together, -also there is but little wear on the mark may be undecipherable by the 'con sumer.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, illustrating by way of example one manner and the punches are rappractising the invention is shown in coning device 1% may be accurately positioned by turning the handle 26 of the screw shaft.
The shaft 6 is drawn forward or back so that the labels clamped in the carrier may be clear of the marking device, say to the right in Fig. 2, as the shaft is slidable in its bearings l2 and 13. Shaft 6 is rotated to move plates 1 and 2 away from each other so that the gang or package or labels on may be placed within the carrier. Shaft 6 is then rotated in the opposite direction to press plates 1 and 2 together and so firmly hold the gang oflabels w. The motor 16 is started, and the shaft 6 is moved longitudinally, sliding in its bearings 12 and 13, and carrying the plates 4: and 5 with the gang of labels, to feed the labels past the marker 14, thereby marking them at the selectedchronological point.
From all the foregoing it will be understood a new label has been provided, and a new system or method of dating commodity packages. It will be understood, also that changes may be made from the exact manner of practising the invention herein shown and described without departing from the principles ofrthe invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.
What I claim is 1. The method of. dating commodity pack ages which comprises placin a secret chronological mark thereon in ar itrary position known only to the packager.
2. The method of dating commodity packages which comprises placing a plurality of arbitrary marks thereon in'predetermined relation with respect to each other to indicate the month and day of packaging.
3. The method of dating ages which comprises placmg a secret chronological mark thereon in arbitrary position with respectfto the lettering or other markings on the package.
4. The method of dating commodity packages which comprises placing a plurality of arbitrary marks thereon in predetermined relation with respect to the markings on the package to indicate the month and day of packaging.
5. The method of dating commodity pack ages which comprises placing a plurality of arbitrary marks thereon in predetermined relation with respect to each other and to the markings 011 the package, to indicate the month and day of packaging.
6. The method of dating commodity pack- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the commodity packages which comprises placing a secret dating mark in predetermined position on a label to indicate a date and attaching the dated label to a commodity package on that date.
7. The method of dating commodity packages which comprises placing a secret dating mark in predetermined position on the edge of a label to indicate a date and attaching the dated label to a commodity packaged on that date.
8. The method of dating commodity packages which comprises placing a secret dating mark in predetermined position with respect to the lettering on a label to indicate a date and attaching the. dated label to a commodity packaged on that date.
9. The method of dating commodity packages which comprises taking a gang of labels and placing a secret dating marking in predetermined position in each label of the gang of, labels to indicate a particular date and applying the labels to commodity packages filled on that date.
10. The method of dating commodity packages which comprises taking a gang of labels simultaneously placing on each label of the gang of labels a plurality of secret dating marks in predetermined relation to each other to indicate a particular date and applying the labels to commodity packages packaged on the marked date.
11. The method of dating commodity packages which comprises taking a gang of labels and marking the edges of the labels with arbitrary marks in predetermined relation to each other to indicate a particular date, and applying the various labels to commodityv packages packaged on the marked date.
12. The method of dating commodity packages which comprises placing a mark thereon in a position indicating the date of packaging the commodity.
13. The method of dating commodity packages which comprises placing a plurality of marks thereon, the location of the marks indicating the date of packaging the commodity.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
