To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, RALEIGH WV. WALKER and MILToN H. HUDSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Oldhams, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tomato Scalding Machines, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved tomato scalding machine and the principal object of the invention is to provide a machine for scalding tomatoes so constructed that the rotatably mounted carrier for the baskets to receive the receptacle holding the tomatoes may be rotated by the weight of the tomatoes placed in the baskets and the carrier thus caused to rotate and pass the baskets through water in the receptacle or trough, the baskets or cradles being so positioned that the weight of the loaded will be greater than those emptied or moving out of the water and thus the machine caused to operate easily.

Another object of the invention is to provide a scalding machine which will be simple in construction and easy to operate.

Another object of the invention is to provide a machine so constructed that it will be easy to clean and to further so construct this machine that rotation of the carrier or drum may be stopped when so desired.

This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view showing the improved machine in side elevation, a portion of the machine being broken away to show the manner of locking the carrier against rotation,

Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the improved machine taken along the line 22 of Fig. 1, and

Fig. 3 is a plan new of the lock used for preventing rotation of the carrier.

The water receptacle or trough 10 carries standards 11 which extend above the upper edges of the walls of this trough and serve as bearings for the shaft 12 of the carrier or drum. Adjacent the ends of the shaft are hubs 13 from which extend spokes 14 which spokes are U-shaped and carry sleeves 15 pcsitioned between two annular bands 16. The

cradles 17 are loosely suspended by the sleeves 15 and will at all times remain in a horizontal position as shown in Fig. 1. It will thus bev seen that as the carrier or drum rotates, the cradles will move downwardly into the water of the trough l0 and after passing through the trough will move out of the water. This water will be heated by means of steam entering through the pipe 18 and therefore the skins of tomatoes contained in baskets placed in the cradles will be loosened and removal of the skins made easy. The baskets of tomatoes will be placed in the cradles and from an inspection of Fig. 1, it will be readily seen that the weight of the baskets upon the right hand side of this figure will counter-balance the weight of the cradles upon the left hand side and therefore the machine will be caused to continually rotate especially when a basket has been re moved from one of the left hand cradles. Even if this distribution of weight should not cause a continuous rotation of the drum or carrier, this carrier can be very easily rotated through taking hold of one or both of the side bands 16. If it is desired to hold the carrier stationary, the lock or latch 19 may be moved through the medium of the handle 20 thus causing one of the sleeves 15 to pass between the jaws 21 of the latch. This latch is slidably mounted in the bearings 22 secured to the cross strip or block 23 and in order to prevent undue movement of the latch, there has been provided a pin which passes through a slot 25 in the latch. With this machine the baskets of tomatoes may be easily and quickly placed upon the cradles and after the cradles move through and out of the water in the receptacle 10, the baskets of 'scalded tomatoes can be easily and quickly removed.

What is claimed is I 1. In a scalding machine, the combination with a trough, and standards carried by its sides; of a shaft journaled in the upper ends of the standards, hubs fast thereon, U-shaped spokes whose extremities are mounted in the hubs, two annular bands inclosing the cross bars of the spokes, a sleeve mounted rotatably on each cross bar between the bands, and a cradle pendant from each sleeve.
