LOG-TURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,669, dated March 23,1886.
Application filed January 5, 1886. Serial No. 187,682. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, XVILLIAM INGALLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Log-Turners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in log-turners, and has for its object to provide an efficient machine for turning logs in a sawmill. This object is attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part ofthis specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation in which some of the parts are in section on the line m w ofFig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detached view of the double-pointed sprocketwheel.
The letter A indicates the framing of a sawmill. A are cross-pieces, the ends of which rest thereon, and are placed a suitable distance apart to receive'a frame, B, to the lower part of which is secured a shaft or axle, I), having bearings in the boxes B, which are bolted to the cross-pieces A, upon which the frame B may be caused to oscillate, for a purpose here inafter described. A vertical box or casing, 0, extends from joists D ofthe mill in a downward direction between the cross-pieces A, and forms a receptacle for a weight, E, which is suspended by a chain or rope, F, which passes over a pulley, G, which turns upon a shaft, g, secured to the upper part of the box 0, and is carried under a pulley, H, secured to the frameB by means of the shaft I, having bearings in the boxes i, bolted to frame B. This chain F then passes over the top of a sprocket-wheel, J, having a double set of ra dial points, j, and provided with a shaft, K, which revolves in the boxes k, bolted to the upper end of the frame B. The chain F is then carried over the pulley L, then around the under part of said pulley to a windlass, M, to which the end is secured. The pulley L has a shaft, Z, which revolves in bearings N, secured to the frame B, which is also provided with a weight, B. This weight B is intended to cause the frame B to assume an inclined position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, after the log 0 on the saw-carriage has been turned,
as this is necessary in order to take another hold of the log 0, as well as to permit other logs, O, to be placed upon the saw-carriage. The
chain F is maintained at the proper tension by means of the weight E, which rises and falls in its casing O,according to the direction in which the windlass M is turned, by means of the pulley or crank M, for which purpose any suitable powersuch as steam or watermay be used. Chocks P, attached to the frame of the saw-mill, support the upper end of the frame B when in an inclined position. lVhen a log, 0, has been placed upon a saw-carriage and is ready to be turned over, the windlass M is put in motion by means of the pulley or crank M. This gradually raises the frame B to a ver tical position and causes the radial teethj of the sprocket-wheel J to engage with the log 0, and by continuing the motion of the windlass the log is turned to the desired posit-ion.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, and claim, 1s-
1. In a log-turner, the combination, with the frame of a saw-mill, ofan oscillating frame, of a sprocket-wheel revolving therein, said wheel having radial points adapted to engage with a saw-log, a tension-chain passing over the top of said sprocket-wheel, one end of said chain attached to a weight and the other end secured to a windlass, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a log-turner, the combination of box 0, of pulley G, of chain F, and weight E,with frame B, adapted to oscillate in bearings attached to the framing of a saw-mill, the said frame being proi ided with pulley H, the sprocket-wheel J, having double radial points j, the pulley L, and windlass M, as described,
and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a log-turner, the oscillating frame B, in combination with a sprocket-wheel, J, having double radial points j, as described, and for the purposes set forth.
