Description
W. H. GARRIGAN.
DRILLING BLOCK-0H ROPE GUIDE.
APPLICATION man nlm/20.1818.
1,289,149., Patented Dec. 31, 1918.
WILLIAM H. GARRIGAN, OF COALINGA, CALIFORNIA.
DRILLING-BLOCK OR ROPE GUIDE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Deo. 31, 1918.
Application filed May 20, 1918. Serial No. 235,570.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. GARRIGAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Coalinga, in the county of Fresno and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drilling-Blocks or Rope Guides, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to a drilling block or guide and it has for its object to provide an improved device of this character adapted for use in connection with well drilling apparatus and constructed in such manner as to eft'ectually protect either the sand or the drilling line, said guide serving to hold said line out of frictional contact with the well casing.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device of the character above set forth constructed in such manner that the wear receiving parts thereof may be made of rope that would ordinarily be discarded, the device being constructed in such manner that said rope may be readily replaced as occasion requires.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device of the character above indicated constructed in such manner that it will s be self sustaining in the well casing and will maintain the line desirably taut.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows:
In the accompanying drawings;
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a line guide constructed in accordance with the invention and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in both of the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, 5 designates the well casing and 6 the drilling nipple held in position upon the well casing by a collar 7 The device constituting the present invention comprises a tapering sheet metal casing of cylindrical form indicated by the reference character 8, said casing having its upper end outwardly flared at 9 and having its lower end inturned or contracted as indicated at 10.
This contracted lower end of the casing 8 forms a seat for the lower convolution of a coil of rope lagging 11 which may be formed of old discarded bull line rope. This rope lagging is held in position by nails 12 to which end the casing 8 is suitably perforated as indicated at 13 for the passage of said nails.
While I have described the rope lagging as being put in the form of a coil, it is to be understood that the invention also contemplates the placing of this rope in position in the form of separate rings, if desired.
The tapering form of the casing 8 facilitates its ready entry into the drilling nipple or rope socket 6 and the flaring outturned upper end of this casing limits the downward movement of the same into said casing. Furthermore the fact that this casing 8 is made of sheet metal renders it somewhat resilient so that it will frictionally engage the inner wall of the drilling nipple and thereby be held aga-inst accidental movement as the guided line moves upwardly.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that simple and eficient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention. It is to be understood, however, that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but that it includes within its purview whatever changes fairly come within the spirit of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a casing and an inner lagging of rope carried by said casing.
2. A device of the character described comprising a casing and a coiled rope lagging located inside of said casing.
3. A device of the character described comprising a casing having an outwardly flaring upper end and an inturned lower end and a lagging of rope disposed about the inner wall of said casing.
4. A device of the character described comprising a tapering sheet metal casing having an outturned upper end and an inturned lower end and a lagging of rope disposed about the inner wall of said casing.
5. A structure as recited in claim 4 provided With fastening means traversing thel passing through the Wall of said easing and Wall of the casing and the eonvolutions of entering said rope lagging. 10 the redlagging. 1 h d b l In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
