TEMPORARY BINDER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. EDDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at 224 South Jefferson street, Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Temporary Binders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to binders of that class in which the upper clamping bar is frictionally held in connection with the. binding posts rising from the lower clamping bar, and more especially to the species of binders of this class in which the upper clamping bar and the locking mechanism applied thereto are provided with rearwardly opening slots to facilitate the application and removal of the upper clamping bar to the binding posts.
The primary object is to provide such binders with an improved friction-lock which will grip the binding post with great security when the upper clamping bar is applied to the post, but which will release with great facility to enable the removalof the upper clamping bar fro-m the post to be effected.

In the construction illustrated, A represents the lower clamping bar of a binder from which rise binding posts A; B, the upper clamping bar of the binder, which is provided at its rear edge with slots 1 adapted to accommodate the posts A; and C, the
gated box, which is adapted to be secured to the clamping bar. B, and which preferably incloses a mounting plate 4, which may be regarded as the bottom member. of the casing 4, although. not. directly attached thereto; a pair of friction- lock devices 5, 5, which, in the'illustration given, are mounted on the plate4; and a resilient sliding cam-bar 6, which is disposed in the upper portion of the casing 4 and actuated by means of a stud, or button, 6*, which projects through a slot 6 with which the upper wall of the casing 4 is provided;
The casing 4, including the base-plate 4*, is out by rearwardl'y opening slots 7, which register with the slots 1 of the upper clamping bar B, and are adapted to admitthe binding posts.
Each locking device 5 comprises a pair of post-gripping members, or jaws, 8, which are somewhat loosely connected with the mounting plate 4, by vertical studs 8?, so
that said jaw-members are capable of swingposition indicated in Fig. 4; and a connecting plate 10 which overlies the operative ends of the jaw-members and has stud-andslot connection 1O therewith, the connecting plate 10 being provided with a rearwardly opening slot 10 which registers with the slot 7 of the mounting plate. 4*.
The pivotal portions of the jaw-members 8 rest upon the mounting plate 4 and the jaw-members are bowed, or bent, upwardly, so that the biting portion of the jaws are spaced some distance above the mounting bar 4. The biting ends of the jaw-members are provided with post-engaging concavities, or recesses, 8 and thus afford lips 8 which are adapted to engage the posts when the clamping bar B is moved rearwardly, so
that the posts will enter the slots. .This action causes the jaw-members to swing to the post-gripping position shown in Figs. 5 and 6. The function of the connecting late 10 is merely to maintain the biting en s of the j aw-members in approximately the same horizontal plane.
The sliding cam-bar 6, when moved to the right from the position shown in Fig. 6 to the position shownin Figs. land 2, is adapted to apply downward pressure upon the connecting plates 10, thereby increasing the biting action of the jaw-members- When an effort is made to raise the upper clamping bar B, the jaw-members tend to swing downwardly, thereby increasing the biting action upon the binding posts. The cam-bar 6 is provided at its extremities with forks l1 and 12, which are adapted to embrace the rear sides of the posts, thus closing the slots 7. The cam-bar is further provided with longitudinal recesses 13 dapted to:ac-
coininodate the posts when the slide-bar is moved to the right from the position shown in Fig. 3. The cam-bar 6 is further providedwith cams, or depending projections, 14:, which are adapted to ride upon the plates 10 and tend to depress the pairs of jaws when the cam-bar is in the locked posi tion. The cam-bar is a resilient member, having its extremities bent upwardly, as indicated at 15,.so thatwhen the cam-bar is moved to the right from the position shown in Fig. 6, downward pressure upon the plates 10 will be exerted. The upcurved extremities of the cam-bar are adapted to slide in contact with the upper wall of, the
casing at, so that suitable pressurewill be exerted, tending to increase the biting action of the jaws upon the binding posts and also holding the canrbar in locked position.
It will be understood from the foregoing 7, that. an initial biting action of the jawmembers isexerted when the jaws-members are swung from theposition shown in Fig/ 4: to the position shown in Fig. 5; that an additional bitingv action is exerted when the cam-bar 6 is moved to the right from the position shown in Fig. 6; and that any upward'pressure upon the clamping bar B, such as might be exerted by the sheets D, or by an effort to' lift the clamping bar, would increaselthe biting action of the jawmembers, owing to.the tendency of the jawmembers to swing downward to a shorter radius. It is to vbe-observed, also, that the jaw-members have a toggle-lever action,

The invention is not limited to this manner of assembling the operative parts, however. The end walls of the casing 41: are provided with depending clenching lugs 4 which, in the" assembling operation, are passed through vertical slots, in the clamping bar B and clenched beneath said bar, as shown in Fig. 6.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessarylimitation'should be understoodtherefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.
What I regard as new, and desire to secure by "Letters Patent, is:
1. A device of the* character set forth, comprising the combination of a bar provided with a slot, a pair of jaw-members having loose vertical pivotal connections with said bar and having recessed biting ends adapted to engage a post, aspring tending to force the biting ends of said jawinembers toward the open end of said slot, a slide-bar having a member-adapted to project across salid slot in the locking position of the device, and means wherebythe slidebar is adapted to depress said jaw-members to cause the biting ends to grip the post.
In a device of the character Set forth, thecombination of a bar provided with a slot t0 receive a post, a pair of jaw-members havlng loose vertical pivotal connections with said bar and having recessed-biting ends adapted to engage the post, a spring tending to force the biting ends of said jawmembers toward-the open end of said slot, and a sliding cam-bar equipped with a sl'ot closing furcation and equipped also with'a tending-- to'depress said jaw-members when the device is in the locked condition.
3. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a lower clamping bar equipped with binding. posts, an upper clamping bar provided at itsrearedge with slots adapted t receive said posts, a lockcasing carried bvsaid upper clamping bar,
' and a pair of lockingidevices in said casing, j each locking device including a pair of rearwardly opening opposed jaw members adapted to swing in a horizontal plane and having their biting ends elevated and adapted to be depressedto increase'the gripping action, and means. adapted to coact with said clamping bar provided at its rear edge with slots adapted to receive said posts, a lockcasing carried by said upperclamping bar, and a pair of locking devices in said casing,

adapted to swing in a horizontal plane and having their biting ends elevated and adapted to be depressed to increase the gripping action, a spring tending to throw the jaw-members rearwardly to the open position, and a cam-bar equipped with slot-closing furcations and with cams adapted to coact with said locking devices to exert downward pressure upon said jaw-members when the cam-bar is in the locking position.
5. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a lower clamping bar equipped with binding posts, an upper clamping bar provided with rearwardly a slotted lock-casing mounted on said upper clamping bar, a pair of pivotally mounted rearwardly opening jawmembers mounted in'said casing at each slot and capable of swinging freely in a horizontal plane and of having their biting ends depressed to increase the gripping action, a connecting plate uniting said jaw-members, a spring tending to throw said jawmembers to the open position when the post is removed, and a resilient cam-bar provided with slot-closing furcations and with cams adapted to ride upon said connecting plates to depress said biting ends when the cam-bar is moved to the closed position.
6. A device of the character set forth, comprising the combination of a lower clamping bar equipped with binding posts, an upper clamping bar provided with rearwardly opening slots, a lock-casing applied to said upper clamping bar and provided with rearwardly opening slots registering with said first-named slots, a mounting plate in said casing provided with slots registering with the before-mentioned slots, a pair of locking devices on said mounting plate, each locking device comprising a pair of rearwardly opening jaw-members,
pivotal connections between said jaw-members and said mounting plate permitting the jaw members to swing freely in a horizontal plane and enabling the biting ends of the jaw-members to be depressed to increase the gripping action, and a cam-bar slidably connected with the upper wall of said casing and equipped with slot-closing furcations and having cams adapted to coact with said locking devices to depress the biting ends of said jaw-members when the cam-bar is in the locking position.
7. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a post-gripping locking device, comprising a pair of opposed jaw members adapted to swing in a horizontal plane and to tilt in a vertical plane, a cam, and meansto cause the cam to depress said jaw members to grip the post.
8. In a device of the character set forth, the combination with a clamping bar, of a post-gripping locking device comprising a pair of opposed jaw members pivotally supported on said clamping bar and adapted to swing initially in a horizontal plane and to tilt in a vertical plane, a plate connected between said jaw members, a cam, and means to cause said cam to bear against said plate to depress the jaw members so that said jaw members grip the post.
9. A device of the character set forth, comprising the combination with a bar, of a pair of jaw members having loose vertical pivotal connections with said bar and having recessed biting ends adapted to engage a post, a plate connecting the biting ends of the jaw-members, a cam, and means to cause said cam to bear against said plate to depress said biting ends so that they grip the post.
