Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1918.
Application led March 2, 1918. Serial No. 220,053.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAUDE B. Wnvnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Tooth-Brushes and other Articles, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to a holder of novel construction from which tooth brushes, surgical instruments and various other devices may be readily suspended by their heads in such a manner that the latter are thoroughly protected against dust Iand other impurities. The vconstruction of the holder is such that by pushing the article to be suspended back into the holder, the latter will be automatically closed, while by drawing thenarticle forward, the holder will be opened, so that in this way, the manipulation is eatly facilitated. The invention consists 1n the various features of novelty, more fully pointed out in the specification and appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fi re 1 is a vertical section on line 1.1 Fig. 2, of a holder embodying my invention;
Fig. 2, a horizontal section on line 2-2 Fig. 1, showing the holder closed;
Fig. 3, a slmilar section, showing the holder open;
Fig. 4c, a section on line 4 4 Fig. 2;
Fig. 5, a horizontal section of a modification on line 5--5- Fig. 7 showing the holder closed; l
Fig. 6, a similar section with the holder open, and
Fig. 7, a section on line 7-.-7 Fig. 5.
The device comprises a casing A` which is closed at its back, sides, top and bottom, but is open at the front. Lugs 8 projecting from the back and apertured for the reception of nails or similar fasteners, permit the casing to be attached to a wall or other support. The bottom 9 of the casing extends forwardly beyond the sides, and is provided with a centrally disposed forwardly opening slot 10. rlhe casing is adapted to be closed by a pair of. vertically hung` covers,
each formed of a curved side or body 11, a lower inwardly extending horizontal jaw 12, and an upper inwardly extending horizontal projection or member 13. 0f these jaw 12 is pivotally secured to and overlies bottom 9, while projection 13 is pivotally Each jaw 1-2 is provided Iat its inner worliing edge with a straight 'front section 19, -a notch or recess 20, back of the straight sec.- tion, and a beveled section 21 back of the notch. 'The correlation of the parts is such, that when the covers are closed, the straight sections 19 of the two covers will become alined and abut against one another, while when the covers are opened, the beveled sections 21 will become alined, and thus limit the play of the covers.
1n use, the tooth brush or other article 22 to be suspended, is slipped between the open jaws (Fig. 3) in such a manner that the head of the brush will project above said jaws, while the handle of the brush will be carried along slot 10 into the notches .20. By now exerting a slight pressure against the handle, the latter will, by bearing against the heels 23 of notches 20, swing.
the jaws and consequently the entire covers into a closed position (Fig. 2), so that the casing will be closed, and the head of the brush be eectively protected in a sani- ^tary manner against germs, dust or other impurities.
To remove the brush, it is only necessary to draw the latter forward by its handle, which operation will cause the jaws, and consequently the covers t0 open, their] outward movement being limited by the beveled sections 21 coming into engagement with each other (Fig. 3). f
With'the embodiment shown in Figs. 5 7, the vcasing B has but a single cover,'in lieu of the two covers illustratedv in Figs. 1-4.
The bottom 24.015 the casing does not protrude beyond its sides and is furnished with the forwardly lopening slot 25. rlhe pivotecl cover 26 has a lower jaw 27, and an upper projection 28, which are pivoted respectively to the bottom 24, and the top 29 of the'casing. Jaw 27 is provided with a slot or recess 30, adapted for the reception of the tooth brush handle.
When the cover is open (Fig. 6), the handle is introduced into`recess 30 and by exerting a slight pressure against the handle, the cover will be swung into its closed position so as to overlie bottom 24, while the handle will be simultaneously carried into the slot of said bottom (Fig. 5).
To remove .the tooth brush, the latter is simply drawn forward along slot 25 to press against jaw 27 and thus open the cover, and return it to the position shown in Fig. 6.
It will be seen that with both embodiments, the holder is manipulated by the simple operation of pressing the brush or other article either backward or forward against the jaws (or jaw) and that when housed within the casing, the head of the brush is e'ectively protected in a sanitary manner, while furthermore, the weight of thebrush is borne not only by the jaws but also by the slotted bottom, which thus serves sagging under 'comprising a casing having a slotted bottom, a vertically hung cover adapted to close said casing, and a recessed jaw extending inwardly from said cover.
3. A holder of the character described, comprising a casing having a slotted bottom, a vertically hung cover adapted to close said casing, and a horizontally disposed re-v cessed jaw extending inwardly from the lower end of said cover and adapted to overlie said slotted bottom.
