PRESSING-IRON.
Application filed June 11, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS TOBICZYK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pressing- Irons, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a gas heated pressing or sad iron adapted for maintaining an evenly heated ironing surface and provided with means for automatically preventing overheating.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a gas heated sad iron having a container for liquid fuel in the framework of the device, without enlarging the usual structure of the same, the parts being readily separable and the burner being easily regulated as well as lighted and extinguished.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a gas heated sad iron that is strong and durable in construction and provides a simple and compact arrangement for smoothing and ironing articles in laundry and similar uses.

My invention comprises the base or iron proper 10 adapted to contain a gas burner 11 carried by a handle member 12 detachably mounted upon the said base 10. The handle 12, being hollow, provides a chamber 13 for holding gasolene or similar liquid fuel 14:, a valved inlet 15 being provided in the forward end of the handle member 12 whereby suitable air pressure is maintained upon the Specification of Letters Patent.

shank 21 at one side of the handle member 12 to be revolved by means of a squared extension 22 to engage the disk with and disengage the same from a similar inwardly projecting ear 1.9 of the base 10. By turning the disk 20 for releasing the same from the ear 19, the handle member 12 may be readily shifted upon the base and lifted off of the same.
The burner 11 includes a T-shaped casting 23 having a vaporizing casing 24 screw threaded thereon, the entrance arm 25 of the casting being secured to the bottom plate 17 of the handle member 12 for receiving the fluid 14 through said arm and into the needle valve passage 26 of the burner casting. A needle valve 27 is adj ustably threaded by a screw thread connection 28 at the outer end of the casting 23, while the opposite pointed end of the valve 27 controls the outflow of the fluid through the valve outlet or nozzle 29 into the hollow casing 24:.
The forward end of the casing 2-1 is secured to a depending lug 30 of the handle bottom 17 while perforations 31 are provided in the bottom of the casing 24 and a pan is positioned therebeneath upon the bottom 33 of the base 10, a desirable number of sic e openings 34 are arranged through the base 10 whereby a suitable amount of the gasolene which has been permitted to enter the pan 32 by the needle valve 27 may be lighted for initially heating the burner 17 to start the vaporization of the fluid 14. After the burner has been started in this manner the valve 27 is readily adjusted through an opening 35 in the rear end of the base 10 so that the burner will continue in operation for impartin an even heat to the said base. The sad iron may be used continuously in the usual manner during the continuance of the heating operation as described and the valve 15 may be removed for replenishing the gasolene it of the reservoir 13, while any air pump, not shown, can be attached to the valve 15 for supplying the necessary pressure upon the fluid.
A housing 36 is carried by the handle plate 17 forming an expansion chamber 37 therein for receiving fluid 38 such as water, which normally fails to fill the said chamber 37, but upon being excessively heated, the fluid 38 expands filling the chamber 37 and causing a flexible diaphragm 39 at the bottom of the housing 36 to expand and extend downwardly, thereby depressing a valve disk 40 over and closing the needle valve outlet 29 as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. A bow spring 11 is provided upon the said extinguisher within the chamber 37, so that the extinguisher 39 will return to its normal elevated position when the temperature of the device is reduced to the desired degree of heat. Although the valve stem 27 may be regulated manually for controlling the burner 11, it may be desired to lock the needle valve in its position during the entire operation of the device and in that event the temperature of the ironing base 10 will be prevented from becoming toogreat by means of the automatic valve disk 40 closing the valve outlet 29 in the manner described.
It will be observed that when the handle member 12 is separated from the base 10, the burner 27 may be initially heated by means of a gasolene torch or similar device if desired and the handle and base members assembled after the burner has been lighted. A serviceable iron carrying its own burner and fuel is provided which is serviceable in -many instances where a similar device requiring a pipe or wire connections would be impracticable.
That I claim as new is:
1. A sad iron comprising a hollow smoothing base, a handle member having a fluid containing chamber therein detachably mounted upon the base, a fluid burner carried by the handle member within the base for heating the same when the device is operatively assembled, a housing carried by the handle member, an expansion control diaphragm carried by the housing, and a shut-off valve for the burner carried by the diaphragm adapted for shutting off the burner upon an excessive heating of the device.
2. In combination with a sad iron base having a detachable handle provided with a depending burner arranged within the base when the device is assembled, a housing carried by the handle having a fluid chamber therein, a flexible diaphragm closing said chamber, and a valve for the burner carried by the diaphragm adapted for automatically closing when the temperature of the device reaches a predetermined degree.
3. A sad iron comprising a hollow smooth ing base, an operating handle having a fluid reservoir therein detachably mounted upon the base, a burner casting carried by the bot tom of the handle communicating with the interior thereof and having an outlet nozzle, a controlling needle valve for said nozzle operable exteriorly of the base when the device is assembled, a casing carried by the casting forwardly of said nozzle and having bottom perforations, supporting means for the casing carried by the handle, and a start-' ing pan for the burner upon the bottom of the base, the said base having ignition openings therein.
4:. A sad iron comprising a hollow smoothing base, an operating handle having a fluid reservoir therein detachably mounted upon the base, a burner casting carried by the bottom of the handle communicating with the interior thereof and having an outlet nozzle, a controlling needle valve for said nozzle operable exteriorly of the base when the device is assembled, a casing carried by the casting forwardly of said nozzle and having bottom perforations, supporting means for the casing carried by the handle, a starting pan for the burner upon the bottom of the base, the said base having ignition openings therein, a housing upon the bottom of the handle, a flexible diaphragm closing said housing, expansible fluid within the housing, and a controlling valve for the nozzle carried by the diaphragm adapted for closing upon an expansion of said fluid during excessive heating of the device.
