To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES Sro'r'r, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Oldham, Lancashire, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Connected with Water-Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to that type of water heater wherein'the water is boiled as it is drawn direct from the cold water supply, the operation being controlled by the movements of a float which has a lever con nection with the cold water supply valve. Such construction, however, is objectionable in that when water is drawn only at comparatively long intervals, some seconds elapse before boiling water can be obtained at the draw-oil point, whereas according to this invention boiling water can be drawn instantaneously as desired, thereby meeting the requirements of a quick service.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved heater, the casing being partly broken away, and Fig. 2 is a top plan view showing the main gas and water valves in cooperative relation.
In said drawing, 0 indicates the float, b the stem thereof, and a the spindle which connects said stem to the lever d that operates the cold water supply valve 6. lhe apparatus illustrated is of the gas-heated type and embodies a burner to having the main gas valve g associated therewith, this valve being connected with the main water valve for operation in unison and being equipped with a suitable pilot light 9 controlled by a valve 9 to which gas is supplied by a branch pipe 9 leading from the gas main 9 To provide for this operation of the two valves 9 and j in unison, the former has its valve proper equipped with a spring-controlled rod g" which is engaged by a cam j* on the handle of the valve g, the arrangement be ing such that the valve j is normally closed but is opened when the handle of the valve 9 is turned to open said valve. The water main j? leads to valve 3', and from the latter leads one branch 7' of the water supply pipe, the other branch 7' of which opens into the bottom of the jacket 1 of the boiler, the upper ends of the two branches communicating with the casing of valves 6.

A. pipe 2 leads from the top of the jacket 1 into the bottom of the annular chamber 3, and a pipe 4 leads from the top of the chamber 3 into a chamber 5, the latter in turn communicating through the pipe 6 with the float chamber. The boiling water is drawn oil by a pipe 7 leading from the upper portion of the float chamber, the draw-cit pipe having a controlling cock 8.
To accomplish the objects above stated, the invention contemplates the provision of a bypass or auxiliary supply of gas, which is independent of the main supply delivered to valve g and, hence, of the saidvalve itsel'li', but is controlled automatically from the float. In the present construction, this is ellected through the agency of the by-pass or auxiliary gas supply pipe having two branches 2' and z", the former of which is connected at the lower end thereof to the gas main g slightly behind its point of attachment to the main gas valve 9, so that gas from said main is always free to enter said branch, the other branch leading at its lower end to burner to. The upper ends of said branches are connected to the casing of the auxiliary gas valve h, which is operated by a second lever f connected to spindle a.
In normal working, when the burner is lighted and the main gas and water valves 9 and j are open, the heater operates in the ordinary manner, the supply of cold water to the boiler being automatically controlled by the action of the float through the intermediation of spindle a, lever and valve 6, as will be understood. The auxiliary gas valve h is opened and closed in unison with valve 6 by means of lever f and its connection with spindle a, an additional quantity of gas thus being supplied to the burner. On the other hand, when the apparatus is not intended to be used for one or two hours, but it is still necessary to keep the water just on the boil, for emergency purposes, the main gas and water valves 9 and j are closed, and the auxiliary or bypass device utilized as the sole source of gas supply to the burner. In this instance, when the steam pressure under the float 0 drops, the latter will fall and, in so doing, will open valve it, thus permitting the passage of gas to the burner, the supply increasing as the float continues its descent, with a resultant rise in the temperature of the water. As soon as the boiling becomes too vigorous, however, the float slowly ascends and thereby gradually shuts ofi' the gas supply, this automatic rising and falling movement of the float continuing so long as no Water is drawn, thus maintaining the Water constantly at the boiling point and ready for use. The valve 0 opens and closes simultaneously with valve h, but since the main Water valve is closed at such time, no Water can pass to the boiler.
l/Vhat I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a Water heater, the combination, with a boiler, main gas and Water supply means having connected controlling valves, and a burner to Which the gas supply means is directly connected; of a by-pass connection between said burner and said gas supply means for supplying gas to the former from the latter independently of the gas-control ling valve; a controlling valve arranged in 1 said by-pass connection; and a float arranged in said boiler and connected With the by-pass valve for automatically operating the same in accordance with the steam pressure under the float.

In a Water heater, the combination, with a boiler, and a valve-controlled Water supply pipe connected thereto; of a burner; a main gas supply pipe connected to the burner; a main controlling valve arranged in the main gas pipe; a by-pass connection between said burner and said main gas pipe behind the main gas valve; a controlling valve arranged in said by-pass connection; an operating lever connected with the by-pass valve; and a float within said boiler and connected to said lever, for automatically operating said by-pass valve in accordance with the steam pressure under the float.
4. In a heater, the combination, with a boiler, and a valve-controlled water supply pipe leading thereto; of a main heatingmedium supply pipe; a main controlling valve arranged in the last-named pipe; a by-pass pipe connected to said second-named pipe behind said controlling valve at one end and in front of the same at the other end; a controlling valve arranged in the bypass pipe; and means for automatically operating the by-pass valve in accordance With the steam pressure acting thereon.
