CRUDE-OIL BURNER FOR STOVES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed February 25, 1907. Serial No. 359,078.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE MADDEN and LUTHER MADDEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Kent, in the county of Union and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Crude-Oil Burner for Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
The object of ourinvention is to provide a device to be used in the nature of an attachment for conveniently using crude oil as a fuel in an ordinary stove,
More specifically it is our object to provide an attachment of this kind in which the oil rece tacle may be readily, quickly and easi y detached for purposes of refilling, and dripping or leakage of the crude oil be prevented when the receptacle is being removed.
Our invention consists in the construction,
arrangement and combination of the various' parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in our claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a stove having our improvement applied thereto as in practical use. Fig. 2 shows an enlarged, detail, sectional view of the coupling device and funnel for connecting the receptacle with the feed pi e. Fig. 3 shows a detail, sectional view il ustrating the combustion pan within the fire-box of the stove, and Fig. 4 shows a detail view of one of the feed pipp supporting brackets.

we have used the reference numeral l() to indicate the stove having adire-box 11. The stove is of the ordinary construction and forms no part of our present invention.
The combustion pan comprises a shallow rectangular receptacle 12 with an open top. Connected with the receptacle are two hangers 13 to pass under the receptacle and extend over the fire-box 11 of the stove, thus upporting the pan near the top of the fire- The means for supplying crude oil to the pan comprises a standard 14 mounted on the stove and having an oil receptacle 15 detachably mounted thereon. A discharge pipe 16 leads from the oil receptacle and is provided with a globe valve 17 of ordinary construction. Beyond the valve the pipe 16 extends downwardly at 18 and its lower end is screw-threaded at 19.
The reference numeral 2O indicates a funnel having a screw-threaded lug 21 in its bottom provided with a screw-t readed openin to receive the part 19. A pipe 22 is provi ed having at its upper end a screw-threaded portion 23 designed to enter the opening in the plug 21, the screw threads thereon being arranged at the same angle as the screw threads on the art 19. By this arran ement, the funnei)20 may be turned and t e plug 21 will move downwardly until the u per ipe which is attached to the receptac e is re eased from the lu The said pipe 22 is supported by suitab e brackets, hereinafter described. Each bracket comprises a body portion 24 with two parallel projections 25 designed to admit the fiange of a stove to between. A set screw 26 is placed in one o the parts 25 by which it may be secured to the stove fiange. The bracket is also rovided with a loop or ring 27 through whic the pipe 22 is extended and this loop or ring is provided with a set screw 28 by which the pipe may be secured in osition. The feed pipe 22 is also provided wit a globe valve 29 near its discharge end and the end of the pipe is designed to project into an opening formed for it in the top of the stove so that it will discharge into the central portion of the pan12.
In practical use, it is obvious that the device rnay be quickly and easily applied to a stove of any ordinary type. The valve 17 is normally left o en and the supply of oil is controlled by t e valve 29. The oil flows into the central portion of the pan 12 and spreads within the pan and when ignited will burn and the heat arising from the fire will be applied directly to the top of the stove. Assuming that it is desired to refill the tank 15, the operator first closes the valve 17 and then turns the funnel 20 until the screwthreaded portion 19 is free from the lug 21. Then if there is any dripping from t e pi e, it will dro into the funnel. After the pipe has cease dripping the tank 15 may be removed to a convenient place for refilling and after it is laced in osition, the funnel 20 may again be screwe to the part 19 and the valve 17 opened and the device ready for use.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, therefor is- 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a receptacle, a discharge pipe `for the receptacle having a screw-threaded end, a fuel feed ipe having a screw-threaded end and a funne having a plug provided With a screW-threaded opening designed to receive both of said screw-threaded pipes and When turned in one direction to release the discharge pi e of the rece tacle and permit the pi e to rain into the nnel.
