GEORGE D. HENRY, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
FLY-SWATTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1918,.
Application led March 10, 1917. Serial No. 153,876.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE D. HENRY, a citizen Vof the' 'United States, residing at Kansas City, in the co/unty of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Fly-Swatters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relatesto improvements in fly swatters, and among the objects of the invention is the production of a durable, efficient, and simple device of this character of few parts which can be manufactured and marketed at comparatively small cost.
Further objects are the production of a novel and convenient handle whereby the device can be firmly gripped while in use; and new and simple means for firmly anchoring said handle to the wire fabric body of the device.
With the foregoing objects in view and others which will hereinafter appear, refer.- ence will now be made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete device.
Fig, 2 is a broken side elevation of the opposite side of the device disclosed by Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation, enlarged, of a retaining member constituting a part of the invention.
Fig. 4 is a broken side elevation, enlarged, of the upper portion of the handle.
Fig. 5 is an edge view of the retaining member in its folded or operative position.
In carrying Out the invention, I make the handle 1 of a single piece of wire folded intermediate its ends as indicated at 2 to form a long loop 3, whereby said handle may be conveniently grasped. The ends of the wire are bent, substantially, into a resilient heartshaped member 4, open at its upper end and the converging sides of which are connected together by coils 5 to keep them from spreading apart.
6 designates the wire fabric body of the fly swatter, the lower corners 7 of which are folded along lines converging to a point and overlapping at the medial line of said body 6. The margin of the body 6 is covered by a flexible binding 9 sewed or otherwise secured thereto, to prevent the rough edges of said body from coming into contact with and marring polished surfaces.
11 designates a retaining member for firmly holding the folded corners 7 over the heart-shaped portion 4 of the handle 1 and firmly anchoring said handle to the body 6. Said retaining member 11 is provided at its lower' end with a clamp 12 and at its upper end with a flexible extension 14.
In assembling the device the lower` corners 7 of the body 6 are folded snugly over the converging sides of the heart-shaped member 4 of the handle 1. The retaining member 11 is then placed over the rough, overlapping edges of the corners 7 and firmly secured by folding the clamp 12 beneath the lower edge and bringing it up against the opposite side of the body 6. The extension 14 is then folded over the upper, overlapping edges Of the corners 7 then passed through an interstice in the body 6, and folded down against the back of said body where it is secured by passing its free terminal beneath the upturned clamp 12. The diverging sides of the heart-shaped member 4 and the folded extension 14 reliably secure the body 6 from slipping upwardly on the handle 1, while the folded clamp 12, with its oppositely disposed notches 13 fitting snugly around the diverging sides of said heart-shaped member 4, prevents the body 6 from slipping downwardly upon the handle. Thus it will be readily seen that the body 6 is firmly anchored to the handle and cannot move independently thereof in any direction. It is also apparent that the retaining member 11 and its flexible extension 14 cover the rough edges of the folded corners 7 and thus prevent said rough edges from striking and marring polished surfaces.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a wire handle having a resilient heart-shaped portion at one end and a long loop constituting a gripping member, a fabric body having its lower corners folded snugly over the heart-shaped portion of the handle, and a retaining member adapted to lie against the folded corners and having notches to admit the converging sides of the heart-shaped portion, a clamp to fold beneath the lower edge and upwardly against the back of the body, and a flexible extension of said retaining member adapted to pass over the overlapping edges of the folded corners, thence through an interstice in the fabric body and fold against the back thereof, Substantially as described.
2. A device of the character described, consisting of a handle, a fabric body having its lower corners folded over one end of said handle, and a retaining member lying against said folded corners and having a clamp folded along the lower edge and upwardly against the back of the fabric body, and a flexible extension of said retaining lmember overlying the edges ofthe folded GEORGE D. HENRY.
