TAG-FASTENER.

Be it known that we, GEORGE W. STITT and Onvrs D. BLOOM, both citizens of the United States, and both residing in Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tag-Fasteners; and" we do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our improvement relates to improvements in tag fasteners, the features of which will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of our invention is to obtain a tag-fastener constructed of springwire and of such construction that it will attach a tag made of paper, metal or other material, to articles of merchandise, sacks, bales, cloth, rolls of carpet, bundles of wire, iron in small form, pieces of machinery and in fact any article or material that one of the three forms will and can be attached to.
The further object of our invention is the rapidity, and speed with which tags can be attached to articles of merchandise, etc.,
therefore the name instantaneous tag-fastener.
It is further our object to so arrange the form in which the fastener is shaped, that three different shapes are constructed of the one general design.
In the accompanying drawings our tagfastener is shown in its three dilferent shapes, the 8 and 0 shape are shown both open and closed, also detail of points and edge or right-angle view.
Similar letters of reference refer to corresponding parts in all the figures, in which Figure 1 shows a side view of the tag-fastener in a U-shape and having a central loop 6, of sufficient size to hold the desired tag. The fastener is formed of a single piece of spring wire and comprises the central loop or bend Z), the arms (Z and e, which in this figure or shape are straight, the return bends 7 7', forming the inserting points and following back along the inner side of (Z and e to a distance indicated by m, where they leave abruptly, forming the two spurs c 0.

The central are or loop 6, the sides (Z and e, the return bends or points 7 and f, and the spurs 0 and 0, but instead of being straight the sides or arms (Z and e are bent outward, and these sides, in connection with the arc and ends a form a complete circle.
Fig. 4: is an edge view or a view at right angles to and of Fig. 1, showing a common shipping-tag attached.
In Fig. 5 pressure has been brought to bear on the arms (Z and e, at the position indicated by z 2, which readily separate the ends at (a, thus showing the shape designated as Fig. .2- open, and ready for action.
Fig. 6 shows the shape designated as F ig. 3 oioen and ready to embrace material to be tagged.
Fig. 7 is a detail of the points and spurs, whlch are the inserting and holding feature, and are the same in Fig. 1, Fig. 2 and Fig. 3.
In use, one of the ends at a, the point 7' and spur c, is passed through the eyelet until the tag rests at Z). If the U shape Fig. l is used, one thrust of the ends a through the material to be tagged is all that is required. Sacked materials, rope, burlap covered materials or merchandise, etc, can in this manner be tagged instantly and with one hand, the spurs c 0 retaining the tag in a fastened position. For any use that would not allow of the thrusting motion of fastening, Fig. 2 and Fig. 3, with the same ends a, points f f, and spurs c a, but bent arms (Z and 6, can be satisfactorily used, thus for wire, nursery stock, materials which will not admit of the points going straight through, etc.
Among the many advantages of our im proved tag-fastener may be here mentioned that it can be so easily attached and with great rapidity to almost any material and of almost any shape and form of material, that it is a more universal tag-fastener, being adapted to commercial or shipping-tags,
price-tags and information tags and fas: tening securely and instantly.

What We claim, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, the tag-fastener having direct inserting points, as herewith described, consisting of a single piece of Wire, at a suflicient distance from the ends of the Wire of the fastener, the said Wire being bent abruptly back against itself, pressed firmly together and theextreme ends of the said bends pointed,
' proper to form retaining spurs or barbs and Will retain a hold on or in the material substantially as the three forms herein set forth.
