Be it known that I, JOHN S. NIXON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of \Visconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in \Vindows for Automobiles, of which the following is a full. clear, concise, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in windows for automobiles.
The general object of the invention is to provide a detachable window which may be readily and securely fastened in place on the door or other part of the automobile, without using screws or other permanent fastening means, and which may be detached with equal ease and stored in some convenient part of the automobile. The invention is particularly adapted for use with what is known as the permanent roof type of body, although it is not limited to such use. In a body of this type, it is desirable to dispense with the windows a great proportion of the time. To accomplish this object, it has been proposed heretofore to hinge the windows so that they may be swung down, out of the way. However, this arrangement has various obvious disadvantages which are overcome in the present invention. one embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Figure l is an elevation of part of an automobile door showing a portion of the window detachably secured thereto in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The window may be of any suitable outline, to adapt it to the particular type of body for which it is intended, and consists of a sashl carrying the usual pane of glass 2. The window is supported on the top of the automobile door 3 by means of metal arms 4, the lower ends of which constitute hooks received within openings 5 in said door. Each of the arms 4 forms part of an integral casting, the upper end of which has the form of a reinforcing member'or brace 6 secured to the window sash by screws 7 or other suitable means. Said casting has a V-shaped rib or projection 8 thereon, adapted to fit in a corresponding groove in the upper end of a casting 9, the latter being secured to the automobile door by means of suitable screws or other fastening means,

The upper side of the door is provided with ainolding 10, made preferably of steel, over which fits a rubber strip 11, the latter being secured to and carried by the bottom of the window sash 1. The rubber strip diminishes the jar and vibration of the window and renders the latter both noiseless and waterproof at the joint. To aid in securing the window in place, a spring bolt 12 is provided, the upper curved end 13 of which fits over the lower hook-shaped end of the arm 4, and exerts a downwardly inclined pressure thereon, which holds the latter against the casting 9 and alsoholds the rib 8 firmly in the groove in the upper part of said casting. Said bolt is impelled downwardly by a spring 14: confined between a bracket 15, integral with the casting 9, and a nut 16 having screw-threaded engagement with said bolt. The adjustment of the nut permits the tension of the spring to be adjusted. The lower reduced end of the bolt 17 passes through an opening in a second bracket 18 at the lower end of said casting, whereby said spring rod is guided in.

To secure the window in place on the door, the lower ends of the arms 4, of which there are preferably two, one at each lower corner of the window, are inserted through the openings 5 with the window in inclined position and the ribs 8 are then forced over without requiring a number of auxiliary The fastening means being concealed within the door. the appearance of the latter is notdetracted from.
Furthermore, the castings 9 on the door frame-are made in such a manner that they .-do not interfere with the upholstery on are simply lifted off and stored; in any convenient place. If it is desired to carry them in the car, they maybe stored, for example, in the pockets provided in the rear of the upholstery.
It will be seen that by virtue of the construction describe-d, automobile windows may be equipped so as to bedetachably applied in the manner described to ordinary touring cars onto other types of automobile bodies. It is apparent that the window need not necessarily be applied to, a hinged member, such as a door, but may be applied to the side of the body as well, to provide a closed car, or it may be applied to the sides of the body, without necessarily being applied to the doors. The term window, as used throughout the specification and also in the appended claims, is. intended to include side curtains, as it is obvious that the members 6 might, if desired, be used as standards'for the support of such curtains as well as for the-support of; a rigid window, such as, illustrated 1n the Itis also obvious that various changes may be made in the, details and relative, arrangement of parts described herein without departing fromthe, spirit of the invention. 7
Having thusdescribed my invention, what claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States. is:
1;. The combination with an automobile door having an opening in one face thereof and a groove offset from the top edge thereof, of a .window having a projection arranged to fit within said groove and having an extension arranged to pass through the opening in said door, and means-concealed within said door coiiperatingwith said extension for hQl' ling said projection in said groove.
2-. The. combination with an automobile door' having openings through the inner face thereof, of a window having a cushioning strip along the bottom of its sash which rests on the top of said door, members secured to said sash and arranged to project' outwardly, downwardly and inwardly through said openings, and spring bolts within said door arranged to hold said members. and hence said window in place.
3; The combination with an automobile door having a molding on the top, of a windowhaving a rubber strip on the bottom thereof which fits over said molding, arms offset from said window projecting downs wardly with hooks at their lower ends and spring catches within said door adapted to cooperate; with said hooks to. retain said window in position.
4.-'i-he combination with an automobile door frame, of a casting for reinforcing the latter, said castingv having anopening in one wall thereof and having brackets through which a spring bolt passes, an adjustable nut on the latter and a spring be tween said nut and one of said brackets.
5. The combination with an automobile window, of an L-shaped reinforcing member secured to one corner thereof, an arm extending downwardly from said reinforcing member having a V-shaped member at its upper end and having a hook at its lower end.
6. The combination with an automobile door having an opening therein, of a vert cally movable spring bolt within said door, a window having an offset arm extending downwardly therefromwith a hook at its lower end adapted tobe hooked through said opening and to be engaged by said spring bolt when the, window is; in inclined body having a molding thereomof a window having a groove in the lower part thereof to fit said molding. a groove in said body adjacent to said molding, a rounded: edge adja cent to said groove, a rib carried by said w ndow and arranged to'fit; said gIQQVQiGX- tensions on said window, and means within said body arranged to exert a y-reldmgpresdisposed that as saidwindow is swung upwardly from inclined to vertical position,

In an automobile bodv, the'comgbinati'on with a door, of a window arranged to rest thereon, anarmcarried by said window and extending downwardly therefrom over the inner face of said door, and a. spring catch arranged within said door, the lower end of said arm being bent inwardly and adapted toextend throughanopening inthe face of said door to thereby engage said spring catch whereby said Window is maintained in position on said door.
11. The combination With an automobile door having openings in one face thereof, of a plurality of grooved supports offset from the top edge of said door, a plurality. of standards adapted to rest on said supports and being provided with projections arranged to engage Within the grooves thereof, downwardly extending arms carried by said standards and adapted to extend through said arms for holding said projections in 15 said grooves.
