Description

P. l. NAGLE.
BOX.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 1:. 191a.
Patented Dec. 17, 1918.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER J. NAGLE, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGN'OR TO CEDAROID CO. INC., OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION.
BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 1'7, 1918.
Application flled April 15, 1918. Serial No. 228,585.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PETER J. NAGLE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to boxes, and more particularly to the type made from paper board and having a hinged closure or cover overlapping the top edge of the front wall of the box, an object of this invention being to provide for utilizing an ordinary barbed brad or nail for securing the cover to the front wall without separating the layers of the front wall so that the fastener becomes loose.
To this and other ends, the invention con sists of certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a' perspective view of a box embodying this invention, the border being broken away t show the nail anchoring device;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged section showing the manner in which the nail is driven into the anchoring device;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the anchoring device before it is applied to the box,- and Fig. 4: is a detail view showing the anchoring device in front elevation applied to the box.
The scarcity of cedar wood has increased the use of paper board in the making of cigar boxes. With the use of paper board the fastening of the box covers has been a problem, due to the fact that the small nails or brads used for securing the covers will separate the laminations of the paper board and not secure the cover to the front wall. To overcome this objection this invention combines with the box an anchoring device which will support the sides of the front wall so that a nail driven into the front wall will not destroy the latter and will at the same time be firmly held, although permitting its withdrawal when desired.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the box body 1 and its hinged cover 2 are both made from paper board, the cover overlapping the front wall of the body as is usual in boxes of this type. On the upper edge of the front wall, the anchoring device 3 is fitted. This device 3 comprises a chan neled strip made from thin sheet metal stock with the sides of the channel lying on opposite sides of the front wall and secured to the latter preferably by forming spurs or inwardly bent projections 4 on the device penetrating the paper wall. Preferably also this strip is narrow so that the border strip 5 usually employed for ornamenting cigar boxes will cover such anchoring strip. The nail 6, preferably barbed, is driven through the cover near the edge of the latter and passes through the top wall of the anchoring device into the paper frontwall. In passing through the anchoring device the latter is deflected inwardly about the nail, as at 7 and this deflected portion, together with the barbs or spurs on the nail, firmly secure the latter against accidental removal, while at the same time permitting the nail to be withdrawn by force. The depending sides of the channel member support the front wall against destruction by the nail.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a box having a front wall made of paper board, and a hinged cover 0verlap ping the front wall, a-channeled nail anchoring strip of thin metallic stock secured over the upper edge of the front wall and having its sides secured to the said front wall, and a nail passed through the cover and through the uppermost portion of the strip into the paper front wall.
