COMBINATION -LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 17, 1918.
Application filed March 30, 1918. Serial N 0. 225,807.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES HENDRICK- SON, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved combination lock adapted for use on an automobile to lock a pedal and thereby prevent the unauthorized use of the automobile, and also adapted for use as a door lock and for other similar purposes, the object of the invention being to provide an improved lock of this kind which is simple in construction, which is extremely compact, and in which the combination can readily be changed.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings z- Figure 1 is an elevation of a combination lock constructed in accordance with my invention, and showing the same arranged for use as an automobile lock, to lock one of the pedals.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same, with a part of the casing removed.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. l.
Fig. 4 is a detailed transverse sectional view of the same.
Fig. 5 is a detailed sectional View of the same, showing a portion of the bolt and also showing one of the tumbler pinions.
The casing of the lock is here shown as comprising circular front and rear plates 1, 2 respectively which are secured on the front and rear sides of a member 3 which may be in practice an automobile dash board, or a door or other device, according to the use in which the lock is to be employed. The member 3 is provided with a circular central opening which in connection with the plate 2 forms a central circular chamber in the lock case. Screws 4 are here shown to secure the parts of the lock case together but in practice any suitable devices may be used for this purpose. In the center of the lock case is a circular member 5 which is here shown as secured in place by a screw 6. A series of annular dials are arranged concentrically in the asing and with respect to one another. the lock here shown being provided with four of such annular dials which are respectively indicated at 7, 8, 9 and 10. Each annular dial is thus arranged for oscillating movement and is provided on its rear side with a beveled gear segment, the said gear segments of the respective dials being indicated at 7, 8 9 and 10. The front plate 1 of the casing is provided in its upper side with segmental slots 11, 12, 13 and 14 through which the corresponding portions of the annular dials are displayed. Each dial is provided with a. numbered or lettered or otherwise designated scale 15 and is also provided with an operating knob or handle 16, said knobs or handles projecting through and being movable in the segment slots and enabling the dials to be manually shifted so that any predetermined numbers or characters on the respective dials may be arranged in line with indicators 17 with which the plate 1 is provided.
I also provide a bolt 18 which is here shown as adapted to engage or disengage a keeper arm or lock arm 19 on an automobile pedal 20. The bolt is mounted for longitudinal movement in bearings 21 of a pair of arms 22, which arms are pivotally mounted on the rear side of the lock as at 23. The bolt has a non-circular end portion 24 which is arranged for longitudinal movement in a guide member 25, said guide member being secured on the rear side of the lock by screws 26 or other suitable means which will enable said guide member to be released. A stop pin 27 is arranged in the transverse opening near said end of the bolt and coacts with the guide member to lim1t the locking movement of the bolt. The bolt is provided on one side with a series of rack teeth 28 and is also provided on one side with a series of detents 29 which project radially therefrom, are spaced apart, and correspond in number With the annular dials.
A series of beveled gear tumblers are mounted for revolution on the bolt and correspond in number with the annular dlals, each one of the tumblers being in gear with one of the dials. The said tumblers are here designated respectively at 30, 31, 32, 33, the gear tumblers 30 engaging the beveled segment 7 of the dials 7; and the gear tumblers 31, 32, 33 respectively engaging the beveled segment gears of the dials 8, 9 and 10 respectively, and as shown 1n Figs, 2 and 3. Each beveled gear tumbler is provided 111 one side with an annular recess 34 to receive one of the detents 29 and is also provided with a segment slot to permit the assage therethrough of the said detent ant hence permit longitudinal movement of the bolt when the beveled gear tumblers are all turned so as to arrange their slots 35 in line with one another and also in line with the said detents 29.
it will be understood that the beveled gear tumblers may be operated by the annular dials and that a person who knows the combination can readily arrange the tumblers by means of the dials and the scales on the dials in such manner as to permit the movement of the bolt. When any one of the dials is arranged with its slot- 35 out of alinement with the detents 29, the bolt 18 is effectually locked against movement. Hence it is impossible tor any one to operate the lock to release the bolt and therebyrelease the automobile pedal, or release a door, as the case may be, unless he knows the combination.
The arms 22 in which the bolt 18 is mounted serve to hold the beveled gear tumblers in the required position on the bolt and also,
when the guide 25 is detached from the member 3 permit sidewise movement of the bolt and the gears thereon so that all oi the beveled gear tumblers may be disengaged from the gear segments of the annular dials and may be then reengaged therewith after the dials have been shifted so as to change the combination as may be desired. in practice the beveled gear tumblers are provided with scales numbered or lettered and to correspond with the scales 15 ot the dials, to facilitate the arrangement of the dials and tumblers in any desired combination, and as will be understood.
To move the bolt endwise to looking or nest/gear unlocking position 'i provide a pinion 36 which is secured on a shaft 37 Which is mounted in the lock case, the said shaft being provided in the front end with a knob 38 whereby the pinion may be manually turned. 7
While I have herein shown and described apreierred form of my invention, 1 would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts, Without departing from the spirit of my invention and Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a reciprocating bolt carrying a series of lugs, a plurality of beveled pinions mounted on said bolt, forming tumblers and havingnotches to permit movement of said lugs, and a plurality of nested rings carrying on one face bevel sector gears to operate said pinions and having indicia on their opposite faces.
2. in a device of the class described, the combination of a base plate, a reciprocating bolt having a series of lugs, a pair of arms hinged to said base plate and having openings in which said bolt may slide, a plurality of beveled pinions forming tumblers, mounted on the bolt and having notches to permit movement of said lugs, and a plurality of nested rings carrying on one face beveled sector gears to operate said pinion and having indicia on their opposite faces, said rings being mounted in an opening in the base plate.
In testimony whereof ll, aii n my signature.
