which may be easily manufactured and readily assembled and not liable to get out of order or require any especial or undue attention in use.
A further object of the invention is a machine of this character which will be light in construction and capable of being easily carried from place to place to thepoint where it is desired for use, the parts being not only of simpleconstruction, but
few in number,'-and the apparatus being ca- I pable of easy actuation by hand.
A still further object of the invention is an improved construction of coating machine of the tank feed, roller and web type, wherein the paste applying rolls are mounted in a tank or paste receptacle which, with the rolls mounted therein, may be easily removed from the machine and readily put back in place after the paste has been received therein, the machine also embodying a paper feeding roller coacting with the paste applying rolls'to effectively feed the paper over and in contact with the peripheries of said rolls, said feeding roller being mounted within a frame or casing Which is detachable from the main framework of the machine, whereby said roller may be easily removed and supported upon arms provided for it, in an inoperative position, while the paper is being first; fed to the machine, or while the paste tank or receptacle is being removed, refilledand replaced.
The invention has for other objects to provide a machine of this character with paper trimming or cutting knives mounted at convenient points, and laterally or otherwise adjustable with guide rolls through which the paper is first fed and with one of which Specification of Letters Patent.

- And the invention also aims to generally improve devices of this class so as to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
With these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention may be at all times determinedor ascerreference is to be had to the following de- 1 scription and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a machine embodying the principles and improvements of my invention,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof, and
Fig.3 is a side elevation, looking at that side opposite to the one on which the section of Fig. is taken.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and accompanying drawings-by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the box-like framework of my machine, and upon the sides of said framework and secured to the upper edges thereof are bnackets 2 formed with open bearings 3 to support the shaft 4 that carries the roll 5 of wall paper to be pasted, cut and trimmed. Preferably, I pro ide a tension ing arm 6 which. in the present embodiment of the invention, is pivotally mounted intermediate of its ends. 'as at 7, upon an upright 8 secured in the framework 1 at one end thereof, a bracket 9 extending out from this end of the framework and carrying a post or rod 10 which is encircled by a helical expansion spring 11. said spring bearing against the rear end of the tension arm 6 whereby the other and curved end of said arm will bear downwardly with the required tension upon the roll of paper 5.
Secured within this end of the framework 1 is a transversely extending rod 12 which carries any desired number of trimming or cutting knives 13", said knives being 0 any desired type or design and mounted for lateral adjustment in any desired way. In the present embodiment of the invention, these knives are of the flat blade type, although it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto, and they are held at the desired adjustments, laterally considered, by means of set screws 1 1, as shown.
As the paper is fed from the roll 5 it first passes between upper and lower guide rollers 15 and 16 and if desired the knives 13 may coact with the uppermost guide roller 15 for the cutting operation.
The paper, after it passes between the guide rollers 15 and 16 extends over and in contact with two transversely extending paste applying rolls 17 that are mounted within a paste tank or receptacle 18 which is suitably held within a transversely elongated compartment formed in the frame work 1 by one end wall 19 thereof and a transversely extending partition 20 spaced therefrom. The tank receptacle 18 has side walls 18" and end walls 18 and is provided atone end with a handle 21 whereby it may be easily slipped by lateral movement out from the framework so as to be detached therefrom and receive its supply of paste.
Mounted above and in frictional contact with the peripheries of the paste applying rolls 17 is a feeding roller 22 and the paper is passed bet-ween the roller and the paste applying rolls 17 whereby the friction, as the roller '22 is turned, will carry the paper on through the machine while atthe same time the rotary movement imparted to the rolls 17 will carry the paste up to the lower or reverse face of the paper and coat the same", the paper, as it passes from the machine. being received upon a conveyer which is preferably of the endless apron type, as indicated at 23, and secured in any desired way in convenient juxtaposition or con tiguity to the other elementsof the apparatus.
in this inoperative position of said feed roller, the paper may be easily first fed between the guide rolls 15 and 16 and over the paste applying rolls 17, or the receptacle 18 easily removed to replenish its supply of paste. The forward and rear walls of the frame 2 1 are designated respectively 24* and 24".
The shaft of the feed roller 22 is extended atone end, as indicated at 28, so as to extend through a slot in the frame 1 and has there secured to it a crank handle 29 whereby it may be easily turned, and by frictionally engaging thepaste applying rolls 17 with the paper interposed between, effect the rotation of said paste applying rolls and the operation of coating the reverse side of the wall paper.
In the present embodiment of the invention the shaft 28 also carries aspur gear 30 which meshes with an idler 81E mounted on the adjacent side of the framework 1, said idler being mounted on the same shaft. with the spur pinion 32 and the latter meshing with a spur gear 33. This last named gear has any desired units or figures displayed thereon, these figures designating the length of, paper unwound from the roll 5 and pasted, the figures being seen through an opening 34 which is formed in a plate 35' secured to the framework, as best illustrated in Fig. 3.
The spur gear 30 also meshes with an idler gear 36, and this in turn meshes with a gear 37 secured to the shaft 38 by one of the rollers 39 of the endless or apron conveyer 23 whereby the latter is actuated.
The rollers 17 are preferably detachably mounted within the tank or receptacle 18 and to this end the tank 18 is provided with laterally disposed supporting members 40 having bearings for the rollers 17. these members %0 being adapted to be removed. from the tank 18 to permit the tank to be thoroughly cleaned. Disposed at the forward end of the tank 18 and extending transversely thereacross is a loose bar 11, theedge of which is upwardly and rearwardly beveled to conform fairly closely to the forward roller 17 this bar resting in recesses in the end walls of the tank and being removable to permit removal of the members 40. This loose bar prevents the paper from following the forwardmost roller 17 down into the paste and guides the paper on over to the endless carrier 23.
From the foregoing description, in connection with the accompanying drawings. the operation of my improved wall paper machine will be apparent. In the practical use of this device the tank or receptacle lti is provided with paste, then the rod 4- is removed from the bearings in the brackets 22 and a roll of wall paper is placed upon this rod. The knives 13 are then longitudinally adju sted upon the rod 12 so as to trim the paper properly or cut it into strips and the )aper is drawn out so as to extend beyont the foremost roller 17. The frame 24 is then disposed in place with its shaft 28 extending through the slot in the side of the outer frame and the weight' ofthis frame 24 and the rollers 22 and 15 forces the paper down into contact. with the rollers 1(5 and 17, the gear 30 meshing with the gears 36 and 31.
Now upon a rotation of the crank 29 it will be obvious that the paper willbe fed between the guide rolls 15 and 16 and'between the feed roller 22 and the roller 17, the paper will be cut. and paste will be applied thereto; The paper in its pasted con-v dition will be received upon a conveyer 23 whence it can be removed as required. 'hen it is desired to clean the paste tank 18, the operator may withdraw the paste tank from the main frame and turn the paste tank upside down and then lift the paste tank up permitting the two rollers 17 and theirbearing members 40 to drop out, After cleaning the rollers and bearings, the operator can drop the bearings and rollers in place again and the device is ready to be returned to its position in the main frame. It will thus be seen that I haveprovided a very simple, durable and efficient construction of machine of this character which will be light and strong in its construction and capable of being easily carried from place to place as its services are required.
While the accompanying drawings illustrate what I believe to be the preferred em bodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto but that various changes may be made in the construction, arrangements and proportions ofthe parts without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

A paste applying machine including a main frame. a paste receptacle mounted therein and remo able laterally therefrom, paste applying rolls mounted in and carried by said receptacle-an aux1l1ary frame removably mounted in the main frame above said receptacle, and a web feeding roller mounted in and carried by said auxiliary frame and disposed in a vertical plane between the paste applying rolls so as to hold a web thereto and extending downward between the paste applying rolls and bearing downward on the web of paper by gravity.
2. In a machine of the character described, a main frame provided with a laterally opening compartment, a' paste receptacle receivable in and removable from said compartment'by a sidewise movement, paste applying means mounted in and carried by its operative position above said mounted in the main frame above said compartment, a web feeding device mounted in and carried by said auxiliary frame and adaptedto coact with said paste applying devices for applying aste to the web passed therebetween and said feeding device, and horizontally disposed arms secured to said main frame and upon which said auxiliary frame is adapted to rest when removed from compartment.
3. In a' machine of the character de scribed, a main frame provided intermediate of its ends with a transverse partition forming with one end wall of the main frame, a transversely elongated compartment, a

4. A machine of the character described comprising a main frame, paper supporting means carried thereby near one end of the same, tensioning means for a roll of paper'- carried by the paper supporting means, the main frame being provided with 2.5--

A paste applying device comprising a main frame, a guide roller journaled therein, a paste tank disposed in advance of the guide roller. paste applying rolls mounted in the paste tank, and an auxiliary frame operatively supported in the main frame 'above the paste tank, a guide roller journaled in the auxiliary frame and coac ting with the first guide roller, and a feed roller 'journaled in the auxiliary frame and disand normally urged toward said paste ap-- plying rollers to force a web against these rollers.

A paste applying device comprising a .main frame, bearings mounted upon the frame and extending upward thereabove, a paper mll supporting shaft detachably mounted in the bearings, a laterally removable paste tank mounted in the forward end of theframe, a guide roller mounted in the f, 'ame rearward of the paste tank, a pair of paste applying rollers mounted in the tank, an auxiliary frame removably disposed within the main-fran' e, a guide roller journaled' therein and removable therewith and coacting with the first named guide roller, a feed roller journaled therein and coacting with the paste applying rollers, means for rotating the feed roller carried by said auxiliary frame, and means mounted on the niain-frame engaging the roll of paper on the shaft and resisting rotation of said roller to feed the paper. a
