SACK-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT T. POTTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Leonardsburg, in the county of Delaware and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Sack-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is capable of use generally as a sack holder for holding the sack while being filled but is more particularly intend ed for use on the grain spouts of threshing machines.
An object of the invention is to provide means that will effectively hold a sack on the spout or the like without the use of spurs or sharp members liable to injure the material of the sack.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a sack-holding means that will readily adjust itself to various thicknesses of sack material; and to provide a sack-holding means that will not tend to open under the load as the sack is filled.
Qther objects of the invention and the advantages of the preferred form and arrangement of the parts will appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an end elevation of a threshing machine spout provided with two outlets having my improved sack holders ap plied, parts being broken away;

, In the illustrated example, the numeral 10 indicates a spout on a threshing machine, same having two outlets 11. Preferably, there is a metallic binding or reinforce 12 on the spout at the outlets and adjacent thereto, and notches 13 are provided to coact with clamping elements of the sack-hold ing means.
Inasmuch as the sack holder at each outlet 11 is the same, it will suffice to particularly refer to one. The holder includes a U- shaped clamp jaw, designated generally by the numeral 14, presenting side arms 15 and a cross bar joining said arms. T he side arms 15 are pivoted adjacent to their ends, as at 16, to the opposite sides of the outlet 11 or other spout or structure to which the sack is usually held in being filled. (and which preferably, are the common pivotal centers 16) to bring the cross bars of the jaws against the opposite sides of the spout at the notches 13, for clamping a sack A on the spout, or to swing to positions to release the sack.
In connection with the clamp jaws, 1 provide means to open and close the same for the clamping and release of the sack and provide spring means so arranged as to hold the jaws in both the closed and open positions. For the indicated purpose, a lever, designatedgenerally by the numeral 20, is providedv and desirably, is given the form of a yoke or bail presenting a cross bar having side arms 21 which are pivoted at their ends to the side arms 18 of the jaw 17 as at 21 The lever 20 has a handle 22 conveniently located on the cross bar of the yoke or bail portion of the lever. Stop means is provided for the lever, there being in the illustrated form an outwardly projecting member 19 on the cross bar of the jaw 17 to arrest the downward movement of the lever by engagement with the cross bar of the latter when the lever is swung to the lowered position. Also, there is a stop 19 in the form of a pin projecting at the side of each spout to arrest the upward movement of the aws.
The side arms 18 of the jaw 17 are continued beyond the pivots 16 and provided with ends23 ofl'set approximately at .a right angle.
At the sides of the clamp jaws, retractile springs 24 are provided, said springs being secured at their outer ends to the side arms 21 of the lever 20 and connected at their opposite ends with the side arms 15 of the jaw 14, adjacent to the cross bar of the latter as at 21*. Additional retractile springs 25 connect at one end with the ends of the offset members 23 of the arms 18 and at the opposite ends with the side arms of the jaw 14, preferably at the Same points (21") as the connections of the springs 24 with the said jaw 14.
Comparing the clamps at the right and left of Fig. l, the former is in the closed position clamping the sack A to the spout, while the clamp at the left is shown open. In clamping the sack, it is held with one hand and lever is moved downward and its movement puts the springs under tension tending to swing the aw 17 upwardly again to the open position. The bringing of the lever 20 to the lowered position places the springs 24 also under tension. In the closed position, the spring 24 at each side of the clamp is brought to a position with its ends in line with or below the pivotal center 21 (see the right of Fig. 1), and, therefore, said springs tend to maintain the lever in the lowered position, thereby exerting a pull on both the jaws l4; and 17 in a direction to hold the same in the clamping position in opposition to the opening tendency or" the springs 25. The sack will thus be held clamped until the lever :20 is again swung upwardly a sufiicient distance to bring the ends of the springs 24: above the center 21, whereupon the said springs will throw the lever upwardly. As the lever 20 is carried upwardly, the adjacent ends of the springs 24 move upwardly until the said adjacent ends are carried sufliciently above the opposite ends 21* or" the said springs -tor the latter to exert an upward pull on the opposite jaw 14 and permit the springs 25 to be effective in exerting an opening pull on the jaws.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A sack holder including clamp jaws each presenting side arms and a cross bar uniting said arms, means to pivotally mount the jaws on a spout or the like to clamp a sack thereon, a lever pivotally mounted on one or" said jaws to swing thereon, a spring connected at one end with the said lever and at the opposite end with the opposite jaw distant from the pivot thereof, and a second spring connected with the said opposite jaw and with the other jaw at the opposite side of the pivot from the said lever, and tending to impart an upward opening movement to the jaws, the first spring in the closed position of the jaws exerting its force to prevent an opening of the jaws by the second spring.
2. A sack holding means including a U- shaped jaw presenting side arms and a cross bar, a second U-shaped clamp jaw presenting side arms and a cross bar, means to pivot-ally mount the said jaws on a spout or the like, to dispose the cross bars thereof at opposite sides for clamping the sack, one of said jaws having a stop and having the side arms thereof beyond the pivot offset, a lever pivotally mounted on one of said jaws, said lever presenting side arms and a cross bar, the cross bar having a handle disposed above the said stop, springs connecting the side arms of the lever with the side arms of the first-mentioned jaw, and springs connected at one end with the side arms of the firstmentioned j aw and connected at their opposite ends with the offset arms of the other jaw, and tending to open the jaws, th first spring, in the closed position of the jaws, preventing an opening action by the second spring, and adapted to coact with the second spring in opening the jaws after an initial opening movement of the lever.
