Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 1, 1918. Serial No. 214,920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr MANOWN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Trail, in the Province of British Columbia and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in filing' cabinets, and has for its object to provide a device of the character specified, especially adapted for use in oflices, stores and the like, wherein the cards are so arranged that the headings are always in sight, and information, data and the like may be added at any time without taking the cards from the system.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view of the improved filing systems;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the card holders;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3- of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
' In the present embodiment of the inven---' tion, a supporting frame is provided, .consistingof standards or uprights 1 and 2, which are connected by cross plates 3 at their upperand lower ends forming a substantially rectangular .frame which may be suitably supported, as, for instance, in the pended.
A series of card holders is connected with the support, each card holder consisting of a substantially rectangular frame4 formed of two sides and two ends, the two sides and one end being channel shaped as shown, while the other end consists of spaced and arallel members connecting the channel walls of the sides. bers of the said last named end are cut away as indicated.at 7 to permit the finger and thumb to grasp a card in the holder.
As shown, the side mem- Hinges '9 are provided for hinging the holders to the upright 1, to permit the holders to swing upon the supporting frame. In'the form of hinges 9 strips are secured to the card holders at their ends, and these strips are bent around the upright, as shown, intermediatetheir ends. 'These'hinges are just tight enough on the upright so that while the frames may be moved longitudinally of the support they will normally hold the position in which they are placed.
In order to provide for the lapping of the holders, the hinges 9 are bent at a right angle at progressively increasing distances from the hinge axis. In use, each supporting frame may be provided with as many card holders as may be desired, and these holders are arranged with each holder nected standards, a series of card holders hinged to one standard to fold against theother standard and against each other'in overlapping relation from above downward, each holder being a substantially rectangular frame of channel material, that end of the frame remote from the hinge connection having the bottom of its channelcut away to permit the insertion and removal of a car 2. A filing system comprising a support consisting of a -pair of spaced rigidly connected standards, a series of card holders hinged to one standard to fold against the other standard and against each other in overlapping. relation from above downward.
