Description
A. W. GRAHAM.
MATCH AND PACKET THEREFOR.
APPLICATION FILED NOV-6,1917.
Patented Dec. 3, 1918.
To alt whom it may concern..- V
Be it known that I, ANDREW, W, GRAHA a citizen of the. United States, residing at -Buflalo, in the county of New York, have invented certain. new
of Erie and 7 State and I useful: Improvements in Matches and Packets .Therefor, of which the following is a'specification. j
Thls invention relates, to -matches .and packets therefor.
-It is a well known-fact-that, the ordinary papergor fiber match which is put up. in
packets and torn ofl' one at a timefor striking presents many defects owing tothe importance of properly protectin it from weather, its liability to break .w en an attempt is made to strike it and various other cases. Oneimportant object of the present do an improved form of match and packettherefor wherein the action of drawing the match from its packet.
will eflcct its lighting.
Another important object of the invention is'toprov'ide'an improved form of match and packet therefor .wherein'each match is held in an individual water-proof holder.
1 A third important object of the inven tion is to provide such an arrangement of match andpacket therefor as will permit a thin and flexible match to be used, the striking of the match being effected whilethe stemis under tension.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying. drawing, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, like char-' acters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and V Flgure 1 1s a perspective view showing an structed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the match in the act of being drawn out of the packet and struck.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through such an individual packet.
Fig. 4' is a cross section through the match and packet.
Fig. 5 is a sheet of such ner that the perspective view showing a packets put up in such manmatches and separated into individual packets.

packets may be,
Patented Fig. 6 is a plan wiew of one of the packet covers as used in the sheet-shownginFlg. 5.
In carryingout the object. of the invention a 'pair of paper strips 10 are provided each ofjwhiching centralbulged portion 11, the edges of the paper strips being held "together by any a portion of each; strip a friction strip 12 of the ordinary material such 'as isfound on'the outside of safety brace the butt end of a match'stem 13 which.
such as stout paper. l his stein 13 passes between the strips an ordinary match head 14. Adjacent the strips 12 is-a' roW of perforations 15. v Now these strips may be made up individually as shown in Fi s. l to 4 or they may be made in sheets, t e individual being) separated by perforated lines 16. It will e obvious that a water-proofing of par aflin or the like may be applied to the exterior ofv either the packet and that the match stem 13 may be impregnated with paraflin in addition. By this. means a perfectlyv water-tight andmoisture-proof, packet is formed so that the match is at all "times kept proper condition for striking. Whenit is desired to strike the match the opposite ends of the packet are grasped as shown in Fig. 2 and; a sharp pull is given. This results in the breaking of the strips along the perforation lines 15 and the quick withdrawalof the flexible match under tension. This causes the head to pass between the strips 12 and ignites the match as it is drawn out of the packet. Of course when the packets are put up insheets, as in Fig. 5, it is necessary to tear ofi' one individual packet from theeasily done by reason of the It will; be obvious that this sold in boxes separately. has a longitudinally extend suitable adhesive material. -{Wit-h thebul ed adjacent one end? is,
is preferably made of some flexible material sheet. or the individual match-boxes and the-like. 'The -endslof the ,jstrlps 10 adjacent the friction strips 12"em- '12 and is provided with.
packets I I obvious that the device may be'used as an advertising device since the exterior may be printed with any desired design or words to this efl'ect. Furthermore it is to be seen that on account of the action of lighting the match beingthat of a quick pull both the necessary match and the packet may be made of thinner material than is possible where it is blow against the friction surface. Thus great economy can be effected. There has thus for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that many; minor changes may'be made in the form and construction of the invention 'without departlng from the material principles thereof. It "is not therefore-desired to'confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished-to include all such-as prope erl iylcome within the scope claimed.
aving thus described'the invention, Ewhat Iclaim as new;is:=- v 1 I 1. A combined match and packet consisting of a pair of strips having longitudinally extending oppositely disposed bulged por- -tions,- a match having a flexible stem, the
butt of'said- 'match beingsecured between to strike the matchvby a sidewise to which the butt been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and the strips at one end of the container, said strips bein'g' weakened adjacent the end is secured and friction surfaces within said strips adjacent. the weakened portion;
2. The combination witha match'packet consisting of a multiplicity of individual water-proof cells separated 1 one from the other by weakened-lines and having aetransverseweakened 'line. adjacent one end of each, of matches having stems provided with butts fixed inthe ends ofsaid cells adjacent thetransverse weaken'ediline and having i E.
