APPLICATION FILED APR. 29,1920- RENEWED MAR. 22.1921- Patented Oct. 4, 1921.
UNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE.
j PAUL JOSEPH' Limusa, o
F GBOTON, CONNECTICUT.
Application iiled April 29, 1920,
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, PAUL J. LEMMER, a citizen of the United States, residino' at Groton, in the county of New London, btate of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Envelop; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact desoription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to envelops and has for its object to provide an envelop to the inner face of which, adjacent its folding point a piece of tape is adhesively secured and forming means whereby when a pull 1s imparted to one end of the tape the flap will be severed from the body portion and the envelop opened.
A further object is to provide members, formed from paper which arch the tape and have their ends adhesively joined to the inner face of the flap and forming means whereby, during a fiap severing operation an intermittent jerk will be caused to be imparted to the tape thereby insuring the severance of the {ia-p.
With the above and other ob'ects in view the invention resides in the com ination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Figure 1 is a rear view showing the iap open.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the envelop showing one end of the tape.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of a portion of the envelop showing one end of the tape in 'the position itassumes during a flap severing operation.
Fig. 4 is a rear view of an envelop showing a modified form wherein a series of spaced arching members are adhesively joined to the inner face of the iap so that an intermittent jerking action will be imparted to the severing tape duri-ng a Hap severing operation. j
Fig. 5 is a of the envelop detail view of a portion of the Specification of Letters Patent. Serial No. 377,560.v Renewed March open the envelop.

envelop showing the form of tape used in Fig. 4.
`ig. 6 is a view of another form of envelop showing a perforated flap so that the flap will easily tear when an instrument or letter opener is placed under the same.
Referring to the drawings and more especially to Figs. 1,2 and 3 the numeral 1 designates a conventional form of envelop and 2 the flap thereof. Adhesively secured to the inner face of the fiap 2 is a piece of tape 3 which tape extends substantially the full length of the Hap and has one of its ends 4 projecting beyond one end of the flap so that it may be grasped by the fingers of the operator when it is desired to sever the flap and It will be seen that by imparting an upward pull on one end of the tape that the flap will be severed or cut by the tape.
Referring to Figs. 4 and 5 the structure is practically the same as in the form shown in igs. 1, 2 and 3 with the exception that the tape 3 which is adhesively secured to the inner face of the flap 2"L has arching it a plurality of spaced arching members 3, the ends of which are adhesively secured to the inner face of the flap 2. The arching members 3* perform the function of causing a jerking action during the severance of the flap thereby insuring a clean cut.
Referring to Fig. 6 it will be seen that the Hap 5 is provided with a series of perforations 6 adjacent its folding point and which perforations will cause the flap to be easily severed when a letter opener is placed under the fiap and moved longitudinally with its cutting edge in engagement with the under face of the fiap adjacent the perforations.
From the above it will be seen that an envelo o is provided which may be easily and quic ly opened and one wherein the cost of making on account of its simplicity is reduced to a minimum.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is The combination with an envelop having a iap, of an opener for said envelop, sai opener comprising astrip of tape adhesively secured to the inner face of the envelop, transversely disposed, members extending across the tape and spaced from each other,
said transversely disposed members being name to this specification in the presence of dhesivly secnred to the imerbfnce of the two subscribing witnesses.

for insuring n quick severance. FREDERICK W. HAIs'r,
In testimony whereof I have signed my i GEORGE E. LEMMl-m, M. D.
