Description

J. n. McAULlFF.
Improvement. in Stump-Joint Seat.
No.'128,645. Patented July 2, 1m;
//// II III Witnesses.
Inventor.
In H1010 "am/001M PM. :19. I: x USAGE/IFS Moons} PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN D. MCAULIFF, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN STUMP-JOINT JUMP-SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,645, dated July 2, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN D. MOAULIIFF, of the city and county of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garriage-Seats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same.
I The figure in the drawing represents a sectional view of my improved carriage-seat situated in both locations, in which F Fis the carriage-sill, and d d is the rocker.
7 joints, 0 0, one at either end, in the manner and form exhibited in the drawing hereunto annexed. These joints, at the upper ends, next the seatA, work against the shoulders J J, which are fastened to the seat -A, and at the lower ends work in the joints 0 O, and against the shoulders K K, which may be fastened to the carriage at the sill F F or rocker d d by means of bolts or otherwise. Now, when the seat is thrown forward, as seen by the dotted lines, it is supported by a small iron railing, H, made fast to the seat A, and comes incontact with the sill of the carriage. When it is in this position it'is just in the rear of the dashboard, and serves as a seat for smaller children. When it is thrown backward, as seen in the figure by the straight and full lines, the shoulders of the arms I) I) come in contact with the shoulders K K at the proper angle, so the seat will be further back, and higher in this position, and serve for grown persons. By reversing the whole apparatus, the seat in the dotted position will come under the back seat, out of the way, and the seat, when in the straight-line position, will be thrown in flout, so as to form an additional seat for a carriage. It may be used in this way for single carriages.
There are many advantages in this improvement, among which are, that it can be thrown forward when you desire to get into the carriage, and back'again after the back seat is filled up; and, also, that it may be thrown under the seat in the rear making a single-seat carriage, and also in front, making a doubleseat carriage or buggy.
Claim.
Now, what I claim, and for which I pray Letters Patent to be issued to me, ist The application of the knee or stump joints 0 G, with the arms b b, to the seat A, as above described, and for the purposes of supports to a jump-carriage or buggy seat.
JOHN D. MGAULIFF.
