One object of my invention istomake a substantial ask which will retain the load 1n any position in which it is elevated, andto make the jack so that it can be a considerable height.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for allowing the jack to be projected to quickly lowered, and also to allow the jack to be raised to a height without operating the gearing. i
The invention also relates to details which will be fully described hereinafter.

At the lower end of the inner plunger 10 'is a pivoted pawl 23 pressed out by a stiff spring 24. The pawl is hung in a bearing by ears 25, Fig. 9, and the lip 26, at its lower edge, is arranged to engage the shoulder 27 at the lower edge of the outer plunger when the jack is entirely depressed, as shown in Fig. 8.
A light leaf spring 28, in the present instance, is secured to the outer plunger and bears upon the edge of the lip 26, and,
when in the normal lowered position, as shown in Flg. 8, Wlll have no effect upon the pawl 23, as the spring 24 is stronger than the spring 28, but when the outer plunger is raised to the position shown in Fig. 1, the spring 28 is forced against the inner wall of the standard 1 and presses against the pawl 23 with sufficient force to overcome the pressure of the spring 24 and consequently the inner plunger is released with ratchet teeth 32 which are engaged by a pawl 33, shown bydotted lines in Fig. 2, carried by the arm 34 mounted on the portion 31 of the shaft 30 and held 'in place by a washer 35 and a screw 36. The shaft 30 is reduced at 37 and projects beyond the housing 8, as shown in Fig. 1, and'a split ring is located between the housing and a washer 39 on the shaft, the washer being held in place by a screw 40. The split ring frictionally holds the ratchet wheel while the pawl is on its return movement.
In order to lock the pinion 5 to the shaft 6, I provide a pawl 41, shown clearly in Fig. 12, which has a tooth 42 beveled at one side. This tooth is arranged to enter one of the grooves 43 in the hub of the pinion 5. The pawl is located in a slot 44 in the shaft 6 and its inner end isnotched to engage a cross bar 45 carried by the shaft 6. .A spring 51 bears upon the under side of the pawl 41 and tends to force the pawl into enring 49 located in a groove in the shaft 6. The sleeve 47 is retained on the shaft by a spring ring 50 located in a groove in the outer end of the shaft, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
It will be seen by the above construction that the outer plunger can be raised and lowered by a ratchet movement and it is held in any position to which it is adjusted by the worm and worm gear. The ratchet device can be reversed, as in other types of ratchet mechanism, so as to raise the jack or lower it, and by the use of the spring pawl, which locks the shaft 6 to the pinion 5, the ack can be quickly lowered by merely pressin upon the collar 47 so as to force the pawl out of engagement with the pinion 5, when the outer plunger will be lowered by its own weight carrying with it the inner plunger, and when the pawl 12 comes in contact with the inclined face 52 of the standard 1 it is forced outward, releasing the inner plunger 10 from engagement by the pawl 12, and this plunger will drop by its own weight.
Cushions may be provided for the two plungers and in the present instance I have shown a cushion 53 located in the bottom of the base 2 and held in position by a detachable plate 54 so as to cushion the plungers when they are dropped from an elevated position on pressing the collar 47.
If the jack is used as an automobile jack, the operation is as follows :The jack is placed on the ground and, if possible, directly under one of the axles of the automobile so that the strain will be directly on the plungers, but if there is a strainer rod then it may be necessary to engage the axle by the curved projection 22, the base being so designed as to properly support the load.
The outer plunger is raised by the ratchet. mechanism to the point indicated in F 1, where the spring 28 forces the pawl 23 carried by the inner plunger out of engagement with the outer plunger by coming in contact with the inner wall of the standard 1, then the inner plunger can be raised by merely pulling up on the head so as to bring the head directly under the aXle, and the forked end 18 of the handle 19 may be used for this purpose, particularly where it is diflicult to gain access to the jack. After the head has been properly located in position, the handle 19 is placed in the socket 53 in the arm 34- and the arm reciprocated, causing the shaft 30 to be turned and this shaft imparts movement to the shaft 6 through the worm and worm wheel and as the pinion 5 is locked to the shaft 6 by the pawl 41 it will be turned and the outer plunger 3 raised, lifting the aXle of the automobile to the desired height so that the wheel will be clear of the ground. The jack will hold the axle in the elevated position as it is locked by the worm and Worm gear, but, on reversing thepawl 33, the movement of the shaft 30 can be reversed and the outer plunger can below ered, lowering the aXle and when theplun ger is lowered sothat the pawl 12 comes in contact w'ithxthe inclined surface 52ofthe standardl, theinner plungerxwill be "released and both plungers willthen be in their lowest positions. i a i If 1t is desired,however, to release the outer plunger without using 3 the 3 ratchet mechanism, the collar 47 can be nushed so as to release the pawl 41, when both plungers will drop into their lowest positions.

The combination in a lifting ack, of a standard; an inner and an outer plunger mounted in the standard, each plunger having teeth, the teeth of the inner plunger being ratchet teeth; a pawl on the outer plunger arranged tov engage the teeth of the inner plunger, the standard having a beveled portion arranged to force the pawl out of engagement with the teeth of the inner plunger when the outer plunger is lowered; a head carried by the inner plunger; means for coupling the two plungers when they are in their lowest positions; means for releasing the inner plunger when the outer plunger is raised a given distance; a pinion meshing with the teeth of the outer plunger; and means for turning the pinion.
