GEORGE WATERWORTH YOUNGER, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
SMALL-ARM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1918.
Application filed December 6 1917. Serial No. 205,825.
, To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE VVA'rnRwoRTH Yonnonn, a citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of 2 Mecklenburgh Square, London, W. C. 1, England, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Small-Arms, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fire-arms and is applicable to practically all kinds thereof.
The object of the invention may be described as being to provide means whereby a person using a rifle, revolver or the like.
will know when the firing mechanism has reached a predetermined point before the actual let off. In other words, I provide means whereby the marksman will know that he has pressed the trigger so far that a very small further, preferably adjustable and predetermined, pressure will fire the charge so that he can without actually firing get to such point Where only a further delicate pressure is required to fire the arm.
The invention may be broadly described as consisting in providing on any suitable part I of the fire-arm which is grasped by the hand or fingers when firing, but preferably in connection with the trigger, a device which will, when the said point before the let off is reached, cause itself to be felt as by giving a slight prick or other touch to the trigger finger or some other uncovered part of the firers hand.
A simple form of my invention is that in which I provide an adjustable false trigger or guard in front of the ordinary trigger, provided with a pin one end of which will, when the guard or false trigger is pressed back, thus compressing the spring, bear upon the ordinary trigger, and cause the other end to project through the guard or false trigger and so be felt on the finger.
The means for adjusting the guard or false trigger may be as desired, so that the appliance on a fire-arm can be adjusted precisely to suit the pull of the particular weapon or to suit the requirements of the individual marksman using it.
An example of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 shows part of a fire-arm a to which my invention in the form of a false trigger fitted to the ordinary trigger is applied.
Fig. 2 shows the trigger device, on a larger scale in its normal position, and
Fig. 3 illustrates approximately the positions of the false trigger and the ordinary trigger when pressed.
In these drawings the ordinary trigger 1 carries a small lug 2 upon which the false trigger 3 is pivotally mounted the arrange ment being such that pressure on the false trigger is transferred to the toe of the ordinary trigger. A spring 4 normally holds the two triggers apart as shown in Fig. 2. The pressure of this spring is adjustable by a small screw 5 fitted to the false trigger. pin 6 is fitted loosely in a hole through the false trigger and is of such size and so positioned that when the false trigger is pressed to the extent shown approximately in Fig. 3, the back of the pin contacts with the spring 4 which pushes the pin forward so that its point projects through the hole in the false trigger and imparts a slight prick to the marksmans finger. It will be evident that because the spring 4 is adjustable by the screw 5 the predetermined position when the pin touches the finger can be regulated, and consequently the amount of pressure on the false trigger before it imparts the full amount of pressure to the ordinary trigger can be regulated to a nicety and thereby adjusted to suit the fire-arm to which it is applied as well as the requirements of the marksman.
It will be evident that the invention can be carried out in many different ways and as another example the guard or false trigger may be mounted in any suitable manner upon the ordinary trigger and the pin may be attached by a leaf spring to the underside of the false trigger and acted upon by contact with the front of the ordinary trigger, any suitable method of mounting the pin being employed and it may be adjustable in length, or in length of movement, assuming it to be pivotally mounted or arranged on the end of a short arm.
While I have in these two examples described the invention as particularly applicable to the trigger I wish it understood that any means of operating the indicating device may be employed, and it can be worked from the firing mechanism instead of the trigger and as above indicated can be arranged to make itself felt on any other part of the firers hand.
Another form is that in which an adjustable screw can be fitted to theusual trig ger guard and be furnished with a pointed end directed forwardly and adapted to pass through a slot or hole in or at the side of the ordinary trigger so that when the ordinary trigger is pressed to a position just before the actual let off the said point will project and be felt on thetrigger finger.-
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a fire-arm, a trigger,'a false trigger, and a pin slidably housed in the false trigger for projection therefrom and against the hand of a user ofthe fire-arm when the false trigger has been pressed a predetermined distance.
2. In a fire-arm, a trigger, a false trigger pivotally mounted upon the trigger, a spring between the two triggers, and a pin adapted to project beyond the false trigger whenthe latter has been pulled a predetermined distance.
3. In a fire-arm, a trigger, a lug thereon, a false trigger pivotally mounted upon the lug, a spring between the two triggers, and a pin adapted to project beyond the false trigger when the latter has been pulled a predetermined distance. I
4. In a fire-arm, an ordinary trigger, a lug on the trigger, a false trigger pivotally mounted upon the lug, a spring between the ordinary trigger and the false trigger, means for adjusting the spring and a pin carried by one of the triggers and adapted to project through the front of the false trigger when the false trigger has been pulled a predetermined distance.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
