Description
UNITED STATES PA ENT OFFICE.
JAMES BURNS, OF EAST TOPHAM, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRlDLE-BITS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,532, dated July 2, 1872.
effective for controlling rest-ive, vicious, and
runaway horses; and it consists in attaching to one or both of the parts of the bit one or more lugs or staples, which shall bear against the roots of the tongue or other sensitive part of the mouth of the horse when the reins are drawn, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front view, and Fig. 2 a side view of my improved bit.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A and B represent the parts of the bit. 0 O are the rings for attaching the reins. The two parts A B are connected together by an eyejoint, as seen at D. E are small lugs or staples, which are rigidly attached to the bit, as
seen. The parts of the bits are drilled, or
apertures are made in some other way, and the lugs or staples (one or more) are inserted and fastened by riveting or otherwise. These lugs may be in any form, (either flat or round pieces of metal,) riveted or screwed in, or in the form of small staples fastened in any manner. I do not confine myself to a single lug in each part of the bit; there may be one or more but in practice I have found that one lug or one staple in each part of the bit is sufficient. Nor do I confine myself to one lug or staple in each part of the bit; a single one in one part of the bit may be found to answer the purpose.
The position of the lug or staple on the parts A or B is preferably nearer the central joint D than the rings 0 C, but they may be placed in any part of the bit. I do not confine myself to this particular kind or style of bit. The bit may be in a single piece instead of two pieces, with one or more lugs or staples therein, and still be my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A bit made with one or more lugs or staples, E, therein, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
