W BY/ STEPHEN A. DOUGLASS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
CHECK-PROTECTOR.
.72 all whom it mayconcern:
Be it'know'n that I, STnrnnN'A. Douc- LASS, a citizen-of the United States of America, residing atthe city of Louis, State of Missouri, United States of. America, have invented a certain new and useful Check-Protector, of which the following is such a full, clear,"andexactidescription as will enable anyone skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad' to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. l
My invention relates to a device for making' permanent indications of definite or limiting figures on checks or other documents or forms, and the principal obj'ectof my invention is to produce a device of this character, which, while thoroughly effective, will be very simple, inexpensive and convenient.
Fundamentally, the invention relates to a device adapted to be removably attached to the cover or other permanent part of a bound volume of checks or other business forms, and provided with means for making indications at the proper place on a form after it is detached. In the specific form herein described the device comprises a one-piece clip formed of resilient material adapted to embrace the edge of a check book cover or the like, and having a resiliout part provided with means for tearing out a portion of the check.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a top plan view of the device; Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing it in place on the edge of a check book cover; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the stamping from which the device is formed by bendingthe same along the dotted lines; Fig. 4: illustrates a check in position for making an indication of the limiting amount thereon; Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate how, by folding the margin of the check, the device will make an opening in the body of the check, rather thantearing a piece out of the margin as in Fig. 4:.
- As will be apparent from the drawings, the device comprises clamping parts 1 and 2, designed to embrace the edge or other suitable part of a book of check or other forms, and a resilient tongue 3 provided with a V or other suitably shaped point. Pressed out of the part 2 is a resilient re- Specification of Letters Patent. Pate t d N 19, 191-3 Application filed October 27,1917. Serial No; 198,814.
taining' tongue 5 which bears upon the surfaceoi the book cover 6, and prevents unintentional disengagement ofthe device there-.
from. The stops 4., also integral with the part 2, serve to position themargin of the check in proper relation to the point of the tearing member 3, it being understood that the check forms will be provided with a series of limiting figures or other indications, preferably along a 'margin of the form. The position ofthe stops at will be so relatedto the tearing point 3 and the position of the figures with respect to the marginof the check as that when thismargin is brought against the' stop the member 8 may be caused to make the indication at the proper place.
As a modification, the check form 7 may be provided with a weakened line 8 (Figs. 5 and 6) and may be folded along this line before insertion in the indicating device, in which event the device will make a diamond-shaped opening in the body of the check, as indicated in Fig. 6.
In the operation of the device a check which has been filled out is torn from the book and its margin carrying the limiting figures is inserted beneath the tongue 3. This tongue is held down by the operators finger and the check is pulled toward the tearing point of the member 3 and the portion of the check clamped beneath this point is torn out.
The retaining member 5 is resilient, as is also the material at the bend joining the parts 1 and 2. This permits considerable variation in the thickness of covers 6 to which the device may be satisfactorily attached. It will also be understood that the device may be easily removed from the cover of one check book and transferred to another.
I am aware that modifications may be made in the specific structure illustrated without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I, therefore, do not intend that its scope be limited other than by the accompanying claims.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. The combination of a bound volume of said device comprising a resiliently mount,
ed member attached to a permanent portion of the volume and provided with angularly disposed tearing edges terminating in a tearing point and a stop positioned to co operate with the margin of a form to locate a limiting number thereon in juxtaposition to the tearing point and to locate said inargin in cooperative relation with the tearing edges whereby a portion of the margin may be torn out.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a single piece of resilient material provided with two bends in opposite directions forming it into three spaced superimposed parts with the end members on the outside, one of said parts cooperating with the central part to form a clamp to embrace the edge of a check book cover or the like, and the third part being adapted to cooperate with the central part to make indications on material inserted between said parts.
3. A device of the character described,
comprising a single piece of resilient material bent to form clamping parts to embrace the edge of a check book cover or the like and a third part adjacent to one of said clamping parts for making indications upon the material inserted between it and said clamping part, one of said clamping parts being provided with a stop for positioning the material upon which the indication is to he made. 7
a. A device of the character described, comprising a single piece of resilient mate rial bent to form clamping parts to embrace s'rnrnnn a. noneriass [Ls] Copies at this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Gommissioner or Eatents, "flaming 11,331. E.
