Application filed July 20, 1918. Serial No. 245,889.
acter especially designed and adapted ioll` use in connection with a window and it is an obj ect of the invention to provide a no vel and improved ventilator which, in addition to permitting the escape oi vitiated air prevents the ingress oi insects.
lt is also an obj ect of the invention to provide a novel and improved ventilator including a hood which oiiers no hindrance to the required ventilation but serves edectually as a storm shield.
The invention consists in the details oi construction and in the combination and arrangement ci' the 'several parts o-imy imadvantages are attained and the device ered simpler, less expensive and otherinore convenient and advantageous for The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
ln order that my invention may be the better understood, l will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein ldigurel l is a .vertical sectional view taken through a ventilator constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, the coacting window frame being shown in Jfragment.
lEig. 2 is a fragmentary view in rear elevation of my improved ventilator as herein set forth.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in perspective of my improved ventilator as herein disclosed, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view illustrating a connection between the ventilator and the coactin window frame.
As herein disclose my improved storm shield comprises two substantially duplicate sections in telescopic engagement so that the device may be adjusted in accordance with ed ventilator whereby certain imporvthe requirements of practice to permit its use in connection with window frames or the like ofJdiiiering widths.
As is disclosed in the accompanying drawings each of the sections A 'and A of my improved ventilator comprises a top plate 1 disposed on a predetermined downward and outward incline having one end portion ,provided with an integrally connected end wall 2 substantially in the form of a righttriangle. The upper marginal portion of the plate l is provided with the inwardly directed lange 3 substantially horizontally disposed when the ventilator is in applied position and the apex portion i oi the end wall 2 is bent to overlap the adjacent end portion of the flange 8. The lower marginal portion of the plate l oit' the section A is returned upon itself to adord a guideway 5 in which is slidably engaged the lower inarginal portion of the plate l of the section A. rlhe dange 8 of the plate l of the section A also overlies and contacts with the Adange 3 of the section ifi so that the sections A and A are edectively maintained in assembled relation.
in practice my improved ventilator is interposed between the vertical Stiles ci a window casing at the top thereof and outwardly of the upper sash and the vertical marginal portions of the end plate 2 ci the sections A; are anchored to the vertical stiles ci the casing by the screws 6 or the like disposed through the lower portion of the end walls 2 and engaging the Stiles of the casing. li desired, screws 7 or the like may be disposed through the flanges 3 and enga e with the top or crown piece of the win`ow casing. Coacting with each of the sections A and A. is a screening element S of a length substantially l(zo-extensive in length with the length of the section and of a width substantially equal to the 'major height of the section or that portion of the section at the inner face thereof. The outer end of the screening element S is provided with the inwardly directed flange 8 overlying the vertical marginal portion of the end plate 2 and pivotally secured thereto adjacent its top by the rivet 9 or the like. The lower portion of the flange 8 is adapted to have disposed therethrough an anchoring screw 6 hereinbefore referred to.
ln practice the upper sash ci the window is adapted to be lowered with its upper rail immediately adjacent the lower portion ot ecA insonne the ventilator so that vitiated air within the room may readily pass therefrom. lt will also be self-evident that the screening elements S serve effectively to prevent ingress of insects while the hood structure as afforded by the plates l and 3 serves asa storni shield.
lt has also been iound of advantage to employ in connection with the lower` marginal portions of the overlapping portions ci' .the screening elements S the spring clip C whereby the elements S are etl'ectively maintained in assembled relation.
l claim:
l. A ventilator comprising two substantially duplicate sections, one section having telescopical engagement with the other, each of said sections having a downwardly and outwardly inclined top plate, and an end plate substantially triangular in form, the upper marginal portions ol thel top plate loeing provided with substantially horizontally disposed anges, the lowermarginal portion of one of the top plates being provided with a guideway to receive the lower marginal portion of the top plate of the second section.
2. A ventilator comprising two substantially duplicate sections, one section having telescopicalengagement with the other, each of said sections having a downwardly and outwardly inclined top plate, and an end plate substantially triangular in form, the upper marginal portions or the top plate heing provided with substantially horizontally disposed danges, the lower marginal portion of one cl" the top plates being provided with a guideway to receive the lower marginal tially duplicate sections, one section having' telescopical engagement with the other, each or said sections having a downwardly and `outwardly inclined top plate, an end plate substantially triangular in forni, the upper marginal portions of the top provided with substantially horizontally disposed anges, the lower marginal portion of one of the top plates being provided with a guideway to receive the lower marginal portion of the top plate of the second section, the Hangs of the second section underlying the llange of the rst section, anda screening element secured to the vertical marginal portion ci the end4 plate of each of the sections, said screening element being of suhstantially a length cov-extensive with the length or the section and of a width substantially equal to the height of the vertical margin of the end plate.
ln testimony whereoii l hereunto aillx my si gnature in the presence of two witnesses.
